    Personally, I don't mind them being Elves, them being Elves or humans don't make much of a difference... I may actually prefer them being Elves with the Feywild-Shadowfell countering each other. The personality and lore of the older lore is much better though, I much prefer the adrenaline junkies

    • @EmethMatthew
      @EmethMatthew 5 лет назад +7

      Pretty much the same for me. I prefer the "humans can live anywhere" vibe I got from 4e which was undercut by the several variant races that were supposed to be humans from other planes... To me, elves being "extra" to the point of reflecting their surrounding environment is the appeal so I heartily approve of the greater emphasis on Eladrin being more fey-like and making Shadar-kai be more shade-like elves... Though in 4e I still put Shadar-kai on a parallel, I didn't get what made theyn different than Drow, except that they weren't elves then, so...
      But regardless, I like the old lore where they basically all have clinical depression and deal with it in an extreme way that actually isn't far off from reality for a lot of people. So again, making elves be "humans but extra" makes that lore make more sense to me with them as elves.

    Maybe combine elements of the different lore? So when they leave their realm they become affected by the curse but regain their beauty and capacity for emotion, it can then get more extreme as they fight against being drawn back to the shadowfell. While in the shadowfell they are ugly and dead inside. Add a cost or a time constraint to leaving again to add to the desperation not to return.

      I like this. I kinda hate the reincarnation instead of oblivion, but I guess they decided if they are a subrace of elves then they need to stick with the elven reincarnation deal...

    You can make being boring and depressive a powerful personality trait if you bump it up into the extreme. One of the most beloved characters from Winnie-the-Pooh for example was Eeyore the depressive donkey. Depending on your group dynamic it might serve as a refreshing counterweight to the other characters whacky shenanigans.

    New lore: the goddess-of-death version of the Raven Queen busts into Forgotten Realms, chucks Myrkul out on his arse if he's still around, decides that the Wall of the Faithless counts as a form of undeath and retroactively claims every soul in it, and teams up with Kelemvor (who never liked the damn thing anyway) to prevent the other gods from trying to have the thing reinstated. Her Shadar-Kai followers are happy because they get to fight off any god-sent challengers and help protect Kelemvor's realm from demon incursions, which is super hardcore.

      Danielle Clarke ...is the wall not there to prevent demon incursions.?

    • @Eruvadhril
      @Eruvadhril 6 лет назад

      It's also made up of tortured souls whose fate is to slowly decay over the course of millennia and possibly be stolen by demons, so if the Raven Queen calls dibs on the souls then the Wall might also vanish, or lose some amount of its power, and the demons might start targeting the souls in the City of Death itself.

    one of my first and favorite PCs was my shadar-kai bard named cahya. She was based off 4e, but personality wise was a dumb, happy go lucky, artistic, dare devil who's goal in life was to leave her mark on the world through her stories and adventures. she was part of the circus at one time and her bit was playing her violin as her shadow illusions danced around her. other then that, her lore followed 4e mostly and some of 3e. a complete badass with magic and her spiked chain. as long as you kept her entertained, she was a great ally

    I like the idea of combining the old with the new for shadar-kai. by default they are emotionless just over time, as they lose connection to their souls. however, they can prevent this more by taking action to make themselves feel more alive or to follow a purpose. this gives the variety of both kinds existing for different reasons

    I wasn’t a fan of the “I need pain!” edge to the old lore and the shadow curse...
    I made a 5e shadar kai Barbarian and kinda spun the emotionless and “old and withered” look associated to being in the shadowfell, and as soon as she was in the material plane she started slowly regaining emotions (rages) and looked beautiful again. I also made her ancestral guardian and reskinned the ancestral spirits as lost souls she was trying to bring back to the Raven queen for help.

    I am getting ready to create a shadar kai character. An undead hunter- grave cleric/raven queen warlock.
    Looking at the lore at face value, I can see why it feels bland. However, the lore only discusses how the shadar kai function in Shadowfell. Which being a realm that literally strips the emotion and vitality from anyone there, of course the shadar kai are going to be prone to fits of melancholy. What they don't really discuss is how they are when they go to the prime material or other planes. In my head, this is where the zeal for life and extremes manifests. The only defense a shadar kai has in the shadow fell is to gather as many memories, emotional ties, and exploits as possible to have as a kind of psychic shield when on their home plane. Also, just as a kid with a very strict or very broken home goes kinda wild when away from home, I feel the shadar kai use forays for the raven queen to live life in a way they can't at home.

    It seems as we learn more about the Shadowfel and its inhabitants, we find what we previously knew was wrong or grossly incomplete. The Shadowfel has come to represent the opposite of the Feywild... a more colorful representations of the Prime Material. Where the Feywild is full of color, flavor, sounds, and life, the Shadowfel is seen in shades of grey and is tasteless, quiet, and absent the life that gives its opposite its reputation.
    This does not mean those in the Shadowfel lack emotion or are 'boring'. Indeed, where one displays their emotion in the Feywild - often to extremes - those in the Shadowfel hide their emotions. Where happiness and excitement are the norm in the Feywild, those in the Shadowfel are more patient, calm, and melancholy. Sadness replaces joy, anger becomes grim steadiness, love and passion become quiet acceptance.
    Nothing personifies these differences more than the Shadar-kai. In much the same way the Eladrin represent the Feywild in many of its strange quirks and extremes, the Shadar-kai have become the public face of the Shadowfel. Their patron deity, the Raven Queen, brought them from a life of struggle to the Shadowfel. In a war between Corelian and Lolth, the Raven Queen attempted to arbitrate a peace or truce. Backed by an increasing number of elves, Her attempts were ultimately thwarted by a cabal of evil wizards who subverted and sabotaged the Raven Queen's attempts at brokering a peace between the warring deities. She was destroyed, only to be reborn from the remaining energies of her supporters. Some might say she reached her divinity through this but not in the way she intended.
    Driven to the Shadowfel by need or as punishment - with help, or intervention, from the other deities - the Raven Queen and her followers were reborn into what we now know. They initially fought against the Shadowfel's darker nature before embracing their new home, forming a symbiotic relationship that gave the Raven Queen and Shadar-kai control over the Shadowfel in much the same way powerful Eladrin control the Feywild. Both masters and slaves to the Shadowfel, the Shadar-kai reflect the eternal struggle they share with the Raven Queen within this plane.
    Often seen as evil, cold, or sinister, the Shadar-kai are merely a darker reflection of those of us that dwell on the Prime. They amplify our patience and calm demeanor. They show what we might look like close to our death, though what we see is deceptive for they are not weak or frail. The Shadar-kai still retain the gracefulness and long-lives of their fellow elves. They live life in much the same way we do, but in shades of grey and without the bursts of flavor we might experience day-to-day. Like us, they live, they love, they laugh, they weep, they rage, they ponder, they grow, they learn, they die... Unlike us, their emotions are muted, making them appear cold and emotionless. Other differences are just that, differences that we find unfair or alarming or peculiar. They, too, find our differences to them as strange.
    As we see more and more Shadar-kai within the Prime, or as our own travel to the Shadowfel, there will come a time where we accept them as our darker reflection. We will understand their purpose - to help the dead transit to their final resting place, to thwart undead abominations from obtaining unnatural life or power and maintain balance alongside the Feywild. For without the Shadar-kai and the Shadowfel, the Prime would fall into chaos and become ruled by countless dead or undead - forever lost. For all their ugliness, they hold a beauty we can only guess at.

    With the newest iteration, this is a heck of a good race for a number of classes. You get to tp a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus per long rest (which for them is only 4 hours). Since it's a bonus action, you could use that first to TP into position, make your attack(s) and be totally immune to all damage from a return attack. Imagine a swashbuckler rogue doing this to a beholder 4 or 5 times with full sneak attack damage each time?

    I like them being elves. Personally, between me and a DM during the time I was playing a Drow who was trying to be good, it was REALLY weird and awkward. We were in between trying to have it so society didn't look at me weird and also constantly getting noticed for being a Drow. It would work in an underdark campaign setting, but I was insistent on playing one anyway. The Shadar Kai's neutral demeanor I see can be dull, but I think it's cool to explore and rp them like the 3.5 anyway where they are extreme in order to feel things. Rather than having a boring RP experience, you have a blank canvas where you can turn that character into anything they've ever wanted to be. Especially if you're playing them outside the Shadowfell

    5e Shadar-Kai actually works super well with my current Elven Monk that I'm porting in from Dungeon World. He's an absolute truth and secrets obsessed borderline sociopath who doesn't care in the slightest about the lives he murder-hobos in pursuit of his goals (which are kinda hazy and subjective to begin with). He has nearly killed the entire party many times over now because something made him want to kill something/someone to get at the secrets it held.
    Although I would add that for the Dungeon World side of the campaign I was playing the character as highly valuing experience as a part of his "truth" obsession which left him pausing after battles to think through the frailty of bones after he punched through someone's with a Glaive.

      Depends on your definition of edgy... If you go by the typical goth/emo nihilistic mindset, it's the Shadar-kai. If you want more death/thrash metal just fully embracing destruction as the only power and value system, then it's the Drow. The Drow are designed to be straight up chaotic evil as a society and only individuals might possibly deviate, while the Shadar-kai are more chaotic neutral overall and individuals can veer chaotic good or true neutral (or potentially chaotic evil) but their society doesn't focus on destruction for domination... The old lore at least was about trying to protect the life they had even if the means to do so was "unconventional" and the new lore just kinda makes them creepy servants of the Raven Queen.

      Actually thinking about them and looking I don’t think Assassin is their best class. I’m gonna say Barbarian, mechanically. Thematically I’d do rouges, Hexblades, Shadow monks, shadow sorcerer etc.
      But yes mechanically I vote Barbarian. Their strength and dexterity bonus lends well for the Barbarian unarmored defense as well as the teleport ability gives them a good use of their bonus action which after raging they don’t use a lot. Plus the resistance means they can run up, bonus action teleport, make their attacks, and have resistance until their next turn when they can rage. Plus perception and Fey ancestry are always useful.

    I'm currently playing a shadar-kai and it's really cool. He was found by humans when he was a child and raised by them. They didn't know about the shadar-kai and thought he was a pale moon elf. He didn't remember anything about his past life and living with humans he attained emotions. Later his parents died and the Raven Queen started appearing during the trance. He recalled some of his past life and didn't want to return there. Initially, he was a ranger, but I didn't like the class (sorry ranger fans), so I asked my GM if I can swap it and we agreed that I'd become an archfey walrock, for we're currently helping the wood elves who promised to help me with my problem and we agreed that I'll make a pact with Queen Titania so she'd help me to fight off the Raven Queen and she'd basically reshape me so I'd be able to fight, that's how I lose some proficiencies and change the stats

    Personally, I would take the 4th Edition story of the Raven Queen, take the idea of the Shadar-Kai being Elves, but take their origin and lore of 4th Edition. But that's just me.

    Calm on the outside but boiling within. In private they have meltdowns emotionally and rants to the Raven Queen. Publicly they are calm but seem disturbed and have inner turmoil. I assume they are bearers of behavior like shell shock. Since there emotion keeps them feeling alive they handle it like a Vulcan. Just ravings

    Raven queen has the ability to pluck souls before they go to the afterlife if she wants to. That’s why it doesn’t matter if Shadar-Kai worship another deity.

    @the_dungeoncast as for the lore of 5e i would expect that while in the prime dimension there emotions like there youth would return and if they were in say the fey wilds they would suffer extreme anxiety and mental health issues

    Honestly, it depends on the world. I run in the forgotten realms and have a player who is wanting a shadar kai and there has been in lore history about it. The raven queen is not a realms deity. In Exandria or the Nintar Vale yeah shes a deity so the epves version is fine. I guess Oerth too since the 3e base world was greyhawk.

    I don't care for the new lore. The fact that the Shadar Kai can now be resurrected goes against the Raven Queens belief that death is the natural path of life. The Raven Queen doesn't even view death as something to be mourned. The Shadar Kai should embrace death.

    I don’t know that it’s boring. I get the shader Kai is a race with built in dissociative depression. That’s how they always have been. The only difference between D&D editions is their coping mechanism. Used to be adrenaline junkies. Now just giving in.
    I like to play them as depressed, but trying to fight their way out of depression. Not the search for extreme adrenaline fixes that only temporarily make you feel something, but an arc of self help and healing.
    Not happy, but desperately searching for happiness, while at times giving up on the search entirely.
    Basically an emotion roller coaster. Constantly on the edge.
    That’s anything but boring to role play.

    we the dnd palyers know all these answers but the characters in the world have no idea about 99% of the stuff we know about the dnd world. the average farmer has no idea their is the abyss and the 9 hells and that their is multiple heavenly planes. they arent sure about how many/if there are elemental planes. same with the feywild and shadowfell.

    As a player race id never use them. Maybe as a one shot joke. As a dm I feel fine using them when my players are in the shadowfell (which spoilers is a big part of my current campaign) because it helps build that fell atmosphere without giving any contradictory signals, and also because frankly the old lore makes me anxious and uncomfortable.

    So, is the Raven Queen the embodiment of Death in D&D? Or is that still relegated to Thanatos (Greek) or something more obscure like Azrael (Islamic angel of death) or the classic grim reaper look of Death (think, Billy from Supernatural).

    • @InquisitorThomas
      @InquisitorThomas 3 года назад

      Basically The Raven Queen was the God of the Dead for the standard 4e Campaign Setting or as 5e refers to it “the Dawn War Pantheon”, which is technically a completely separate setting from any other previous setting. However 4e was a serious dip in D&D’s popularity, so when 5e came around most of 4e’s lore was retconned out of existence and the standard setting for 5e was returned to the Forgotten Realms who already has a God of the Dead, Khelemvor. However the one element of 4e that most people liked was the Raven Queen and they didn’t want the Raven Queen retconned out of existence, but people also really like Khelemvor, so Wizards decided to make her this not quite deity entity in the Shadowfell that ruled over lost memories so the Forgotten Realms could have both. So if you’re in a setting that uses the Dawn War Pantheon (like the Critical Role Setting) she’s the God of the Dead, if you’re in a setting with its own god of the dead then she’s a weird higher power in the Shadowfell or the setting equivalent.
