    Dr. Novak, The information I've gotten from both Bently and you has really improved my adventure back into this hobby.
    Plenum and BCB has had a significant impact on my aquarium. Having had issues with of all things Java fern. Bentley helped me with that.
    A little help with light and proximity to the substrate solved my problem, thanks Bentley.
    A new 29 gallon is in the works.
    No BCB, just a Plenum with a canister filter.
    Clay, Iron, and the Plenum have provided me with no gravel vac, no glass cleaning and VERY little nitrates are a game changer.
    As some you quoted said "it's almost boring ".
    Thanks to you both.

    Yes Dr. Novak I remember the 80s and there was a big push to run a powerhead or a canister filter through the under gravel filter even pushing reverse flow through the under gravel filter in an attempt to keep the substrate clean. I started using this method on my 125 gallon marine aquarium and was disappointed and in the early 80s, they started pushing trickle filters which have more or less passed also into oblivion. Hell yeah, I was there I can testify everything you’re saying is true, all those innovative ideas they came up with, are now basically defunct.

    Lastly, if you can make a video strictly explaining anaerobic filtrations please. I generally don't find nitrates in my bare bottom tanks (which are heavily overstocked; usually 2+ guppies per gallon + snails, sometimes plecos). I have always assumed the reason my nitrates area always very low is because I put lavarock in the tanks. Sometimes even in the tanks without plants, I don't see any nitrates. But I generally have big lavarock in those tanks and I will occasionally see bubbles forming on them and rising up. How would I know if that's anaerobic or anoxic activity in those lavarocks? Does red lavarock have iron?
    And yes sometimes I notice there is 0.2ppm ammonia or something like that in the tanks.

    I came up with an awesome UGF design using 3/4 CPV and bulkhead fittings for those snap together plates with the 1 inch space. The 3/4 inch cpvc has a ID of just a bit more than 1/2 and when used with a air stone has very limited flow because the stone blocks 80 percent of the pipe. I went with Czech Airlifts that have a pressure chamber and no stone, so you can tune the flow to your needs.
    I'm not a fan of the clay and instead went with a deep red flint gravel bed with 1/16 to 1/8 grain size.

    Something that's very interesting for me is that ever since I started using a plenum in my tank is the lack of cyanobacteria bacteria, my previous planted tank was setup very similar to what father fish advocates, potting soil capped with sand, and while the plants were growing fine, I did have to clean cyanobacteria after about a year from the substrate and glass, whereas in my plenum it's been almost two years and I get very little cyanobacteria, I don't even have to clean it, so not having to deal with cyanobacteria in my tank it's definitely a plus 🙂 I was wondering what "wonk" means thanks for the clarification.

    I grew up in the 80’s and I couldn’t figure out why people said under gravel filters were the way to go with planted tanks and all they would die. It’s a lot like pumps people always thought a bigger pump won’t have to work as hard when in all actuality they were operating the pump outside the curve and doing real damage to it all the time.

Therefore, removing the DOCs, humic and fulvic acids in the water column? (I'm not knocking the Walstad, I love a good ecosystem). Merry Christmas Dr Novak!

    hello, I have been following your channel for a while and I want to say thank you for all the information you share with us. Your method interests me a lot. I have a question: what flow rate should a pump supplying the plenum have?
    In general it is said that a filter must have at least a flow rate of 3 times the volume of the aquarium.

    • @anoxicfiltrationplenums
      @anoxicfiltrationplenums  9 месяцев назад +2

      If you're using a sump with BCB bags, there are no restrictions on flow rate. If you have a example : 75- gallon aquarium, there's no reason you can't be pumping 500 or more gallons an hour through your sump.

    Also if I put 2 tubes in my underground filter... 1 is 1", and the other is 1/2" - but I lower the water level BELOW the top of the tubes, it feels like the thin tube can lift the water much higher and faster. Am I missing something or does this only apply to lifting the water above the water line? And how do we know how much water is moving through an uplift tube when air is also moving through it? Do you have something to test total flow? How can you be sure how much of that is air? I have to do some experimentation with this stuff again as my memory has gotten foggy but I could swear that I have always gotten stronger filtration with a thin uplift tube.

    Hello Dr. Novak. I saw your video and you are going to do a video of an electric pump for the plenum. My question is whether: 40-50 gallons per hour for the flow in the plenum is good. And what should be the height of the pipe? Does the height of the pipe affect the amount of water that will pass through the plenum.

    • @anoxicfiltrationplenums
      @anoxicfiltrationplenums  9 месяцев назад +2

    • @anoxicfiltrationplenums
      @anoxicfiltrationplenums  9 месяцев назад +4

      One is mechanical and one is biological. However, if you've been watching my videos, you will see people that have literally nothing in their aquarium including my antique aquarium barely has any substrate, but yet I'm using a BCB bag to complete the nitrogen cycle. This is also the same with people all over the world, using BCB bags or baskets, in their sumps, even though they may have no substrate at all in your aquariums. However, to answer your question, biological is the most important when it comes to acquiring keeping if your husbandry is good and the amount of food and fish in the aquarium is very light.

Now I've seen this video, I'm new to this hobby and I want to make a filtration system, Anoxic filters, because it's cheaper and it seems closer to reality, to what happens in nature, I hope I succeed. What I didn't understand is the substrate material that covers it can't be something like gravel, gravel, water soil. stones again or volcanic rock, that is, a stratification can be done or the substrate does not have to be very large. I'm thinking something like this, cat litter (2 cm) gravel (1 cm) volcanic rock (1 cm) Aquarium Soil (1 cm) gravel (2 cm) is this possible? It's ok ? . Thanks for the information and good luck in the future.

    That kid still ain't gettin' it. He thinks he does, but no.
    He's thinking that the ionic attraction in the substrate is a direct analogy to filter floss that needs high volume mechanical delivery for water clarity.
    He doesn't understand the role of electro-negative oxygen (oxidizer) as opposed to O2.
    Our own gaseous atmosphere has mechanisms that create ozone and hyrdoxyl (oxidizers) which cleanse the atmosphere. Our bodies have anti-oxidant mechanisms to protect us from being damaged by it.
    Oxidizers in water are what keeps pathogens in check.
    If we dont't have a healthy generation of O-, then it's back to ridiculous scheduled water changes.
    O2 is not O-. O- has an unpaired electron and seeks something to react with.
    Bubblers don't infuse O-. O- is an ion liberated during a related chemical reaction. When a solo O is snipped from NO2, or FE2O3, etc.
    "I prefer lots of aerobic bacteria and plants"
    That's a non-sequitur. An anoxic plenum has to have a massive volume of aerobic zones before the anoxic zone occurs in the depths.
    Zero good reason to knowingly exclude an anoxic zone. No upside. None.
    It's a matter of people wanting to put a personal stamp on something to feel special and recognized for novelty.
