The V sets were not the first NSW trains to use air-conditioning, but rather the first multiple unit suburban sets which were air-conditioned
We used to have air conditioned carriages on the steam hauled Newcastle Flyer from around 1950. Prior to being broken by an XPT the Flyer, hauled by 3801, held the record for the run in 1964 and at that time Newcastle was really Newcastle CBD.
Most of the time, the Flyer was hauled by a 38 Class, and they gave excellent service. In the early to mid "60"s, I was doing quite a few trips from Sydney to Newcastle and return. The fastest was behind a 46 Class to Gosford, then a change to a 38 to Newcastle Terminal. I can't now remember the exact time, but it was around 2 hours.
There were other air conditioned trains of course, and in steam days most of those were hauled at least part of their journey by a 38 class. They also hauled many of the Mail trains running through the night with a heavy load of sitting and sleeping cars, as well as the mail vans.
i do love the v set trains been on borad it a few times last year when i vist sydney in september i hope do it again when i v set sydney again in September get on the board the v set train again for a ride from the city to lithgow and back again

Actually this is not the first nsw train to have aircon, the silver city comet was the first train in nsw to get it (built in the 1930s)
Ah yes I forgot about the SCC
The first in Australia and many other regions.
AcCtUalY wasn't there an AE/BE car that got air-conditioning really early on
0:05 BOWENFELS not BOWEN FIELDS this ain’t Victoria
“THIS THING was created” lmao
best thing is it was never even called the suburban v set that’s just a common meme lol
several of the cars got destos, most are now scrapped but i think v25 or v27 has a car with a removed desto
V21
The vast majority of the DCM cars received destos there was no such thing as a "suburban v set"
A pity that they're going. They're comfortable and have lasted well.
Disagree. Cant go fast enough. I've had enough dealing with these unreliable tin cans for the last 20 years
From a passenger's perspective, they were good trains with their comfortable seating and ride. Is that better?@@CatTerrist
There is a lot of them
First clip is Wollongong but you said blue mountains line
Came to say the same thing
Just a correction the 1970 DDIUs weren't V sets at all the only similarities were the body profile and the livery the DDIUs had a more swept back "forehead" and mild steel frames which were painted black making the gondola look alot taller than the production V sets the DDIUs were semi permanently coupled in 2 car sets with the power car and trailer shearing equipment like motor alternators and alike this was because there was not enough room in a single car for the equipment which is why the production V sets have shorter in length gondolas 15 of the 16 DDIUs
Were rewired and converted to run with production V sets all were withdrawn In 2005 and most were scrapped soon after DMT9204 hung around at Petersham for a couple of years but it was blown up as part of police training no DDIUs survived
Thanks for the information, I wasn’t quite sure about what that was specifically
