I had to stop keeping hamsters because I got too worn out from having my heart break every two years but for people who still keep them, it is SO important to keep them healthy, strong and happy by following all the advice given in this video. And it's especially important to help them out as they get older by doing things like making their homes easier to move around, lowering the nozzles on their water bottles if necessary, providing softer foods etc. Watch your hamster closely to see what sorts of things are becoming more difficult for him/her and get creative in coming up with solutions to make their "golden years" easier.❤❤❤

My hamster, Igor, is now 2 years 7 months and has definitely slowed down. His eating habits have changed over the time I have had him and he rarely uses his wheel these days. I keep thinking about simplifying his life style but then think about what I would want if I was older. I would want things to remain the same but of course eliminate any danger and complexity. I have begun giving him softer foods on a regular basis to allow him the choice on what he is feeling like. I do worry about him and hope he is a happy hamster.

hmmm. I guess Digger my syerian hamster was more unusual then I realized. He lived for 7 years. Yes 7 years. I did everything wrong in the beginning of course because he was my first. He had at that time was a standard store bought cage. Very little bedding because there was no room, of course. He had a wheel that was to small. Despite all this he was very forgiving of my failed efforts to improve things. As time went on though I added new things that I would swap out in his cage so he had variety. I spent a lot of time with him outside his cage. At about year 5 I had a 33 gal tank that I turned into a playground. All my hansters took turns spending time in there. They got an hour each night. the burrowed, searched for food which they took back to their cages, they had fun with different tunnel materials and toys and chews. Their cages became like bedrooms for them so they didn't mind staying in them. I'm not sure why he lived so long but I was blessed by him. He taught me everything I needed to know to help my other hamsters live a better life. He never complained. He soldiered along. I miss that little guy. My other hamsters lived from between 3 to 5 years.

I've had a few hamsters already and they all lived at least 2 and a half years! Even my first, Pip, whom I have quite a few regrets with. He still had way better conditions than most hamsters, but I still had a lot to learn before my second hammie, Pixel.
Pixel was the one that I really started doing great with. She also turned out to be a sickly ham, having a tumor at 10 months old and later it turned out she had an enlargened heart as well. I found an amazing vet for her though who did surgery on her and later monitored her when her heart issues turned up. She lived to 2 years and 8 months, living a full year after heart diagnosis and taking medication every day.
While having Pixel, an unexpected hamster made his way into my hands. Pepper was a 2 month old hamster that was thrown away by horrible people. He had a weird bump on his wrist. I took him to the vet the next morning and it turned out his wrist was completely shattered to a point where his paw most likely had to be amputated. But me and my vet fought for him. We decided to try healing it so that it would fuse together. He wouldn't have any movement in his wrist and fingers anymore, but he would keep the paw. With the help of my sister I even gave him injections for a week at home, and in the end, after three months of vet check-ups, medication and hope, his paw healed and he kept it! Since the wrist and hand were not functional anymore, he had trouble with holding food in his paws and learned to eat while on all fours.
After that, I decided that I will only take sick, mistreated or unwanted hamsters to give them care and love that nobody else would. My two current hamsters are Prim, who has damaged lung causing chronic breathing problems and requires vet checkups and daily medication (he's doing great and is already over a year old) and a recently taken in Panda, who is a hammie who was discarded by a previous owner for being agressive. Turned out she was pregnant too. She had a litter of 8, all of which grew up healthy and were adopted out by now. She's been living with me for 2 months now and is slowly getting used to people. She's extremally fearful and easily stressed and that causes her to bite a lot, but I'm used to it by now since Pepper was a biter as well.

This video is very good! You have some cute hamsters there. Snowy was a very happy hamster and I loved her a lot. She had no problem until a big bump grew on her belly. I went to the vet and they said he had a tumor. I was very sad and I was afraid of what would happen next. Snowy was as active as usual, but one day I saw that she stopped eating and she was very tired. So I anesthetized her so she wouldn't suffer. She was my only friend and I will never forget her. It was a pleasure to have her with me.🌺😔

My first hamster, Breeze, lived for *almost* 2 years
I wish I had given her a bit more enrichment, but we were moving houses at the time and needed to keep her setup minimal (although still enough to generally suit her needs)
And currently I have a hamster named Pepper who turned 1 year around 2 months ago ^-^
(his setup is sadly small for him because he's afraid of large spaces- when he had a giant setup with tons of bedding and toys he became more skittish and hid inside of his nest a lot)

I don't have a hamster, but I did take care of one for 2-3 months. My aunt's sister's husband had passed and she wanted to visit her. But my cousin had a pet hamster and asked me to take care of him until they got back. When I got him, I noticed that he slept a lot and was big. I looked up everything about hamsters. My aunt said they fill his food bowl up every day. Because of that, he was overweight. They didn't pack any fruits or veggies but he did have a pack of these treats. He was also scared of me and would sometimes try to bite me. They also had this little ball he could roam in but he would freak out in it after a few minutes. It was hard to play with him because he was scared of me, but slowly he started to get used to me. I made sure to play with him everytime he was up. I only filled his bowl a little bit so that he doesn't overeat and I only gave him 2 little treats a day. He started running on the wheel more and became more active. A few days after they came to get him, I checked in on him. Aunt said that everytime my cousin passed by his cage, he would run to the cage hoping for her to play with him. I want to visit him but I wasn't able to but I am visiting him soon. I miss sam.

I'm so glad you talked about genetics improving health!! I like to rescue my Hamsters, and my current Roborovski, Basil, has a stye in his eye, likely due to the conditions he was kept in before he was rescued, though genetics could def play a part! The Vets say right now, it isn't causing issues and is too small to remove, so I'm going to be taking him to the Vets more frequently than I did with previous Hamsters just to keep tabs on his little eye. :) Vets are worried about it turning into a tumour. Hopefully it won't cause problems in the future!
As for my Hamsters ages.. I've had several.
My Syrians, Harry, Jerry and Cinnamon - Harry died of old age, at 2 years old. Jerry suffered from a broken leg after a fall, and passed away when he was younger (1 Year roughly) due to it sadly. Cinnamon almost made it to his 2nd birthday, but developed a respiratory condition due to old age and wasn't able to regulate his body temperature properly, so he passed away in my hands just before his 2nd birthday.
Harry and Jerry were both Pet Store Hamsters, while Cinnamon was bred to be a Show Hamster.
My Dwarf, Snowball, passed away at 1.6 Years old after suffering from a stroke/seizure (We aren't fully sure..) on the hottest day of the year. He passed in his sleep, he looked peaceful at least.
And my current Roborovski, Basil, is 1 year old and thriving, even with his eye issue! :D
Snowball and Basil were/are both rescues! Both likely from Pet Stores, but Basil was rescued from a Hoarding situation.

I wouldn’t say i ”regret” my hamster, But the staff in the petstore mixed up and missunderstood which hamster i wanted. He showed me a picture of a campbell (the one i wanted, Cause i had a campbell 6 years ago and wanted a simular) but i dont know what went wrong but he choose a roborovski and when i got ger a week later she was sooo small and i had to do alot of rescherch on roborovskis and what they need. Its been 5 months since i got ger and she still dont let me pet or hold her and i’ve upgraded her encloser so she has a big one. But i love her regardles and she has a very funny personality. I would never pick a roborovski out of any hamster species but now that i got one i’m happy because she has energy and everything. But little sad that i cant cuddle with her like i could with my last one Nikki. She was so kind and let everyone hold her and you could put her on your lap and she stayed there and just was so chill. So its great to learn all different personalities they have😙😍

I used to let mine free roam all the time and as Syrians will attack each other they were on a rota, but be careful and never assume you know where they are cause it's so easy to step on 1 cause you think it's in 1 place but since then it's run right under your foot. A hamsters short life span is the worst thing about them, they keep breaking your heart evey 2 years. After about 6 years of keeping various hammies I couldn't cope with the upset anymore, so haven't kept 1 in almost 20yrs so I do enjoy watching other people's hammies on utube. 👍🐹🖖

My dwarf only lived for 3 weeks. No signs of infections or issues. I had a 10 gal but I bough a 20 gal this weekend, when I was gonna move her I found her stiff and cold. I tried to get her warmed up but nothing worked. I got a gerbil and gave her a big cage and plenty of enrichment. I hope lemmiwinks lives longer!

My hamster is currently just turned 2 in April. I got her from a breeder and she is still SO active every night even though she is quite old. Not at all looking forward to next month when we are moving and have to give her to my friend, I enjoy every moment with my little white dwarf hamster, Angel

My brother and i both bought an Albino mouse (the ones they feed to snakes so the pet shop owner advised against it as there's a lot of inbreeding) when we were little and his lived for 5 years while mine only reached 3.5 years or so. We bought them on a whim to save them from certain death.
I think i can safely say they had good lives

My hamster Hamstey lived for 1.8 years he passed away 3 days ago. Before going to a holiday trip, i realised my hamster was not in a good conditon. He was less active and not drinking enough water . He is a lazy hamster when he turned 1 year old. Only loves to snuggle on my hand. When i came home, he was in the sand box. I thought he was sleeping, but actually he passed away there. The symptoms before he died : Weak teeth, No exercising . When he died : Black chest.

My dwarf hamster lived 18 month and died of diabetes. At the age of about a year she got a wall-eye. Later her toilet started smelling of acetone, she looked tired and seldom left her house. But still she was very smart and tidy. I was very sorry I couldn't help her in any way other than change her diet. So she lasted a bit longer.

What sort of soft foods would you recommend for elder hamsters? Mine is now 2.5. Overall seems still in decent health bar much less will to free roam and his back/legs weakening. My regret is I was unable to give him one of those huge ikea made cages. I still have a 1mx50cm and he got plenty time outside, but I just wish I could give him the world pretty much.

Surprisingly as a kid my brother and I had a hamster that easily lived 2 years, Nugget.
Oddly he was a pet store hamster and we only did basic Hanster care and cage, although I would not reccomend that now, I would say we got lucky mostly.
He eventually died at I think just over 2 years and he had a tumor growth at the end :(.
We played with him and let him out lots.

My longest living lived around 2 1/4 years, and I believe she died of cancer.
My last (for now) hamster died at around half a year, and the guilt still haunts me because I will never know what killed her. My room was pretty cold at night, when she died her water bottle was empty and I had been asleep/bedridden for a while (though my mom swore she checked it within the last few days), though on the other hand, she had also bit me for the first time a few days prior, which could indicate illness (she was a mill hamster, so her genetics could have been bad)
I think what destroys me is that in the end I'll never know if I failed her or not.
