no one could have imagined that and the success that would follow but that first win for Scott Dixon was hugely emotional for his team PacWest Racing considering their team leader Mauricio Gugelmin had a big testing crash in Texas the week before Nazareth and then had to withdraw from the race after the sad passing of his 6 year old son who had cerebal palsy breaking a 130 streak of race starts so for Dixon to win and manner that he did it was very impressive and put the smiles back on the faces of Bruce McCaw and PacWest Racing because it had been a long time since the last PacWest win in CART 1997 thanks Mark Blundell in the last race of the year The Marlboro 500 at the Fontana Speedway, California.
Familiar story: Dixon isn’t in the picture in the first half of the race, appears near the front at 2/3 distance while fuel saving, filters to the lead, eventually wins the race. And he’s still doing it a quarter-century later.
Amen... Poor Alonso has driven the F1 monsters though, "chucking out close to a thousand horsepower" as Richard Hammond once said (I believe it was the '04 Renault). So I'm sure he thinks everything he's driven since then is just... not... eh... LOVE his radio quotes though, "GP2 engine, AAAAAUUUUUGH!!"
MetalMastodon in pictures of the test he was smiling and look very satisfied driving an INDYCAR then when he is driving an F1 car. That guy is just pissed that F1 is going down or is not as good as it once was when it’s only about two drivers vettel and Hamilton.
I think Paul Page and Parker Johnstone were the absolute best announcer combo in all of racing history. Also, Paul Page and Danny Sullivan were pretty excellent obviously.
They were already running speedway wings...aka pretty much no wing. I don't think it would have been physically possible to reduce downforce anymore as it was all coming from the underside. Reducing horsepower yes. Either way they should have tested more before the event and found the track unsuitable before the season began. It's really not suitable for Indycars 20 years later.
rob mush Totaly understand where you're coming from, but from a personal point of view this is the year i ditched F1 and started following Cart then Champ car. It's all turned ok now though with Indycar, but i do miss Champ car.
Thx für upload Man 👍 Great time of Champcars! Cars like beasts! ❤️❤️❤️ I saw this cars at eurospeedway 2001! Indycar of today is a shame! Sorry...... A german Fan ✌️
MetalMastodon however before Tony George did his power play they were making money and profiting. Then CART they wanted to do the US 500 in 1996 and Tony wanted to due his 25/8 rule and kill all the money that was being made in INDYCAR back then. CART made stupid decisions as well. The sport was run and lead very ugly back then.
@MetalMastodon which wouldn't have happened if their sponsors didn't leave them to run in the Indy 500 and legislation wasn't passed at the time stating you could only advertise in one series. So yeah, Tony George's vanity project was cause of it all
@MetalMastodon well say man! It's great to see somebody looking forward instead to look what's happen in the past, I think Mark Miles and Jay Frye are doing a great job, so I think with the news of new teams, drivers and venues are building a great momentum for the series.
MetalMastodon however looking at NASCAR today they are going into a direction CART was going into in the 2000s. It seems as if the owners makes rules to have better racing but the drivers and fans hate it and then they change the rules again to make the fans and drivers more excited and have better racing but the owners hate it. NASCAR might be in trouble in the next 5 to 10 years if they don’t get a shakeup or there could maybe be a split on the horizon in stock car racing. You said that things started to really get going in the late 80s in INDYCAR with the owners and track owners having disputes. That seems to be slowly building up in NASCAR to me as it was with INDYCAR in the 70s and 80s. The only thing is that ISC and SMI have close relationships and are half owned with the France family. However when the contracts expire will SMI renew it. If not then things could get interesting in stock car racing.
R.I.P Nazareth
I miss Paul Page, I miss Nazareth, I miss a lot about old C.A.R.T and Indycar
I miss Nazareth. It was the first track I've been to, all the way back in 1997.
All the way back in 97? 😂😂😂😂 you’re only 30 years too late
@@tlee717 Well I'm only 26...I was 3 at the time!
who would imagine Dixon's first win would come after saving more fuel than everyone else?

Classic. Great small track in my backyard. Wish they’d bring it back.
Is it still there? Or was it torn down?
@@Beardedvikingweirdo it's still there, but it's not in very good condition
I was there for this race. Great race!
R.I.P Nazareth Speedway
Those engines were 😍. Wish we still had that kind of Horsepower. Then Maybe Fernando Alonso wouldn’t have felt underwhelmed with the car at his test.

They have done nothing with the land they should just bring the race track back
Unfortunately, the property can't be used as a race track ever again. There are plans to turn it into a residential area instead.
What an utter shame!
It is gone forever. Small ovals are not the future. Bring back Watkins Glen to Indycar!
I remember those days very well.
An elite group of drivers during this time. A legend was born at the race.
I think Paul Page and Parker Johnstone were the absolute best announcer combo in all of racing history. Also, Paul Page and Danny Sullivan were pretty excellent obviously.
Great upload. Thanks Indycar.
The knee jerk reaction to Texas by running the superspeedway front wings definitely hurt short ovals in 2001! Man Paul Page was a great announcer

If Kenny Brack's team hadn't sandbagged in those early tests they would have found the issue much earlier, not on race weekend
oh man Scott dixon at 3:39
what happened after that, becoming 5 times Indycar champion, and also one of the most successful driver in Indycar history.

this is why, though i love indycar i always sort of look forward to the off season, because we get treats like old cart races!!!
Can you upload the 2006 Meijer Indy 300 from Kentucky?
well hopefully the series puts up soon but look what I found

The good old days.
poodle559 well back then those days weren’t that good for CART.

Thx für upload Man 👍

A german Fan ✌️
@MetalMastodon
Yes! F1 sucks totally! 👍
Nazareth was such a fantastic track, alot more personality than Pocono.
First race of Dixon ???
First victory
His first in CART was Monterrey, MX on March 11th of 2001. This was his 3rd race (4th if you count the cancelled event at Texas).
0:53 i swear that looks like the old big bad wolf at busch gardens williamsburg but maybe my eyes are playing tricks.
Great to helio , Scott and tony there.
Scotty D's first win. Wow. Everyone says it, but literally...where did all the years go?? Blink of an eye...
Your 2018 champion, folks! Great race by Dixon there!
Definitely a shame that it cant be used for racing anymore. Made a visit to the speedway today. Check it out ruclips.net/video/V56JgflUWus/видео.html
Oh my!! The first IndyCar race I've seen on this channel! 😂😂
That's it, bring back Nazareth superspeedway or Fontana or Michigan
All the circuits will be awesome.
Nazareth is impossible, but fontana, maybe
@@pauloarthuralbuq9004 The track owners are selling the track and those who want to buy it must not make it a race track.
Not even in 480p? Sad when fans have better quality UL's than the series. Headed back over to Asopher. Thanks anyway.
Nazareth back to indy.
Waiting for the next indycar season with alonso in it.
O O F
That CART race being canceled at Texas led to CART going defunct.
Nah, Tony George bribing the teams to switch sides by bankrolling his series with speedway money did that.

I prefer ovals but I never cared for Nazareth. Terrible racing in my opinion.
