the most technically impressive thing for me about these scenes is the way they made the levels infinitely loop while still appearing like you were really moving somewhere and not on a set piece!
Meanwhile in God of War: *KRATOS KILLS A FUCKING DRAGON BECAUSE A DWARF THAN HE DOESN'T LIKE WAS IN DANGER BUT HE HAS TO BE A GOOD FATHER SO LET'S KILL THE THING*
The only problem with the Uncharted 4 chase was that they showed it nearly a year before release at e3. It was still absolutely amazing playing it for the first time, but just imagine how it would have been without knowing what was ahead.
People wanted it, that's why. And plus it was getting great buzz from those who saw behind closed doors version of it. If they still kept it cut off like the initial one, I think we would've all had the same reaction.
wasnt going to comment but since you asked I think this is a really good format for videos and I'd love to see you compare mechanics or themes across certain games series or creative leads. I've never played the post Jak ND games and still found this interesting so that should be a testament to the thought that went into making it.
Thank you very much. I definitely think the Uncharted series still holds onto the fun spirit that ND's older titles had. U4 was a huge relief, because I was afraid they were going to try to make to dark and gritty to align with The Last of Us, but it ended up being another fun adventure and a really great closure to the series. I suggest checking them out.
Actually watching the scene from U4 that you showed in this video made me pretty interested in at least renting it to see. Also I 3D model for a living and have been salivating at some of the shots I've seen from within his house, so it may be worth it just to check that stuff out. Anyway I appreciate that you put this stuff out there, always happy to see you uploaded a video. I ended up playing and loving ZoE as a result of your video. Now I main Anubis Pharah in OW haha
I started playing video games in my forties, and the Uncharted Series has been the most exquisite set a video games ever released imo. the uc4 multiplayer will live for years.
It's amazing that the most amazing sequence in Uncharted 4 was actually the one they'd already done 3 iterations of. And yet it feels fresh and interesting all the same.
there where many big chase scenes in videogames...in fact it was something ridiculed some time ago as they was just a "trope" to put in the game no matter what...like turret sessions and sniper sessions... or sewer level...
Uncharted 2 was so spot on with cinematic and soundtrack, the music reminds me of much simpler times when I was a kid and just wanted to get home from school and play online with my friends and go through coop maps only with glitches, too bad the Nathan Drake collection has no multiplayer and i no longer own a ps3 *cries*
These moments are the highlights of each game. That part in Uncharted 3 is genuinely great, but it's one high point amongst many lows. The gameplay is at its best when it combines it's different elements. Each element on its own, is handled poorly.
That reminds me of an old PSP game called Pursuit Force where you could drive and leap from vehicles and shoot enemies who were still alive as you take over the car ducking on either side of the moving vehicle to dodge fire. I think I heard that Sleeping Dogs had something similar but I've not played it to confirm. I'm really surprised action games with driving don't do this more often.
Great analysis of how ND have evolved this type of sequence over the years. I'm convinced that Uncharted 4 has the greatest video game set piece ever created in that convoy sequence - from the bell tower all the way down to the rail-shooter bit on the motorcycle. It's just world class game design, through and through, and a technical marvel to boot.
Greatly enjoyed the video, Would definitely watch any future videos in this format (comparing evolution of game mechanics from sequel to sequel). Good stuff duder!
Videos like this really make me want to to play the games your talking about. For instance, I just bought zone of the enders because of your second runner video. Your stuff is awesome long comment short.
I'm an aspiring game designer (play laugh track) so it's pretty important to me to take note about what games to well vs what they don't do well and apply it to what I want to make so that it would be enjoyable for people to play should I ever make a game in the future. I enjoy your videos that take game design into such a critical analysis because it not only points out points of praise and error but also gives suggestions on how to improve or how to avoid further errors. So please, make more of these vids.
i like all the different ways you analyze games im fine with whatever type of video you put out really since they are all well put together and i can tell you like doing stuff like this
Definitely more design videos. This was very interesting. I'd like to see more similar to this that discuss the evolution of a specific feature, mechanic, or gameplay idea over the course of a series. Since so much of your content is Metal Gear oriented, would be really cool to see you talk about the stealth in that series over time, for example. But don't stop the other ones, they're unique and interesting, too :D
I really enjoyed the more design-oriented video here, as it puts into perspective the pros and cons of certain sections in a game (i.e. gameplay vs story and interactivity vs cinematics). I reckon Genji: Dawn of the Samurai would offer great material if compared to its sequel, Genji: Days of the Blade.
Love the video, I never bothered playing any of the Uncharted games - so it's nice to get a quick overview of its well known chase sequences and how it built and improved on itself in each iteration. Would be great to see more examples of notable systems / events that happen in a series of games :). I'd love anything MGS based ;)
Just discovered your channel, but if you haven't already, you should update this video discussing the chase sequence in the final chapter of Lost Legacy. Brilliant how they combined it with an homage to the train sequence of Uncharted 2.
i was turned off this series for a good while, but when i got a ps3 i deiced to give it a shot. and i'm glad i did because its probably one of the most impressive games i've ever played. descibing this game as a fun ride is the right way to describe it, thought it's linear i found it feeling alot more open from the balance of fast, dangerous situations and slow exploitative areas.
This was a great video. I played and beat all of the Uncharted games for the first time in the past two months, and man, what a ride that was. I definitely share some of these opinions regarding what the games accomplished. Uncharted 4 definitely ended on a high note when it came to the convoy chase scene.
To be Frank Uncharted 2 and 4 have the Best action Sequences!!! I have Played all the 4, I always Enjoy 2nd and 4th the Most!!! LOve UC and will Miss Uncharted!!!
I didn't watch that video earlier because i was afraid of spoilers. Now I have played uncharted 4 and the first thing i wanted to do was to watch this video. Amazing analysis! I didn't know that there is so many details in uncharted 4 convoy chase :D
I'd love to see you talk about the Jak series and the specific thing that you liked or disliked about it. With that out of the way, this was a great video. Admittedly, playing Uncharted 1 & 2 made me want to give the older Tomb Raider games a try.
moar design videos!! i like the way you made it so that they learned from their previous design and polished it. i would love to see more like the evolution of fighting games/stealth etc
I just did not find U4's setting as good as U2's. The technical improvements are impressive, but the train and convoy scene in U2 that takes you all the way from the tropical lowlands of Nepal into the snows of the Himalayas in one continuous sequence is phenomenal.
I like how when it comes to video games post-apocalyptic zombie worlds are what is realistic while a treasure hunter after lost cities and secrets is so over the top we never consider it a possibility in our reality.
Have you taken a look at furi? Its quite the interesting mix of journes and i think it nails it very well if you take into consideration that it is an indie action title.
Great video and I enjoyed the format, I would love to see you do something longer maybe showing the evolution of something like The Legend of Zelda dungeons. They have had high and low points, would be interesting I think....anyway great video dude. Keep em coming.
I think you're letting your overall opinion of UC3 bleed into your opinion of that one horseback chase setpiece. It's inarguably better than UC2's truck chase on every level imaginable except maybe the lack of a dangerous cliffside, which you touched upon. Other than that, great video man, always great to see an analysis video in my sub box.
Uncharted 4 is something spectacular, and it makes me sad that we are getting closer and closer to the extinction of these amazing single player experiences.
More of these types! Could you do one on Splinter Cell Blacklist? I really like that game's sense of player agency, along with the diverse toolkit you have as compared to other games.
Rafe wants the fame and recognition of finding the treasure himself, he wants to feel like he actually earned something instead of having it given to him, it's a bit more compelling than taking over the world with purple hulks and evil desert genies.
J Man yeah. maybe. and he could very easily done that by using his wealth and just go explore some archaeological site... focusing for 20 years on a pirate treasure is just stupid plot... purple hulks (shamballa guys?) was a byproduct of what Lazarevich searched in nepal (he had a good amount of wealth, but he searched a way to become immortal). and those DJINS you fight in Uncharted 3 are hallucinations from a toxin (mold?it would be rather realistic if so). that as a weapon would be VERY MUCH WANTED in modern day weapon market...just think releasing that toxin in a mayor city...
Libertalia was a pretty big find which would give him the major recognition he desired; nothing else would suffice and Rafe was no quitter. Saying Putting 20+ years on treasure is stupid is dumb especially if you're Rafe who's been 'on the cusp' w/ help of Sam & Nate through a lot of the progression. You insinuate Sam(?) is worse than Rafe and that's absurd. He was simply a liar and 'war' is a stretch when Rafe and Nadine's Military vs 2 middle age isn't much of a conflict
Cool video! I was wondering if you were going to make a "disappointing aspects of Uncharted 4" video like you did with TLoU but this was more interesting. Uncharted 4 is a game I both love and am a tad disappointed with since it has too much down time to be all that replayable.

I prefer the plane sequence from U3

It really was the best sequence in the game, by a country mile, so bizarre that they decided to spoil it.
I'm so lucky I didn't watch the trailers lol
People wanted it, that's why. And plus it was getting great buzz from those who saw behind closed doors version of it. If they still kept it cut off like the initial one, I think we would've all had the same reaction.

It's amazing that the most amazing sequence in Uncharted 4 was actually the one they'd already done 3 iterations of. And yet it feels fresh and interesting all the same.
disappointed you didn't talk about Crash Bandicoot being the predecessor. The animal rides and boulder chases from it are the same concept.

I enjoy this type of video format, I wouldn't mind more videos like this!
These sorts of videos comparing design trends across a series have always been my favorite
One of the best channels related to gaming I've seen, keep the good work !🤘🤙
yes I do like this format of exploring game mechanics. Can't wait for more!
You should totally do more videos like these, they're so informative and well put together!
I wished the fourth game had ran in 60FPS for the single player.
Me too. It sucks that it didnt. They were targeting 60fps for the SP at one point in development too.
At least multiplayer runs at 60FPS although at this point they need to start adding more things because I've gotten bored of it.
they got to about 45-50fps I think but couldn't push it further for campaign
Great analysis of how ND have evolved this type of sequence over the years. Wait a second, what happens if you turn around and drive away? Does Sam die?
I want to know this, as well.
yes
Strateqize That's awesome.
He isn't shown dying. Nate continues to say things like "I've gotta get to Sam fast." and if you fail the encounter, it just resets.
Happy to report that Lost Legacy has arguably the best convoy chase yet. A great blend of 2's and 4's that ends with an awesome bang. :)
Good analysis. I really want to go back and replay the first 3 again now. You should definitely think about doing more videos like this in the future.

I loved this video. I'd like to see more of this kind.
You should totally check out Pursuit Force, it's an entire game based on that car jumping mechanic.
I only ever played the first game (and didn't continue the series because I hated it), but this video seems well-done. Good format.
Love the Design oriented videos :)
The chase scenes were the high point of each game when I think about it. They feature much less trial and error compared to the other set pieces.

I think I still prefer U3's convoy sequence, it just had a nice classic adventure movie feel to it.
Agreed. It's just good ol' swashbuckling fun. Everything I love about Uncharted is nicely packaged into that one level.
I'd certainly enjoy more videos of this nature man. :)
thanks for the video.
