A bit of history for you. Confederate General A. P. Hill's Corps completed a "speed" march from Harper's Ferry, and at arriving at Sharpsburg (Antietam battlefield), pitched his corps into Burnside's troops which had just broken across the "Burnside" bridge and had a clear line of site to Lee's headquarters. You probably took the route his men took. If you ever want to do a wild and wonderful weekend of hitting the big Civil War battlefields, count me in...offer my limited tour guide skills. We rode up to Gettysburg from Tennessee last year and had a blast. It's awesome riding through the parks because you can ride up next to the roadside monuments...and parking is super easy :-)
Somewhere I have a photo of my Bonnie next to the "Welcome to West Virginia" sign along old Rt.9 on that mountain, I think it's from my first ride to Seneca Rocks. Alternating windscreens? (Noticed you had the stock one on for your preview video of the weekend route.) BTW, while John Denver may have popularized "Country Roads", I'm pretty sure he didn't write that one; I forget the name of the couple who did the song "Afternoon Delight" (before your time, mid-70's), I believe they wrote it (pretty sure they recorded it too), if I'm not mistaken they were from northern Virginia. I remember going across the bridge from Sharpsburg into WV on a Memorial Day weekend trip once, there's a cemetery near the bridge with a number of Confederate soldiers' graves (from Antietam), they were each decorated with miniature Confederate flags, which I thought quite appropriate. Since then some politically-correct asshole put a stop to that practice.
Filmed before I got the new one. Travel/ride videos don't necessarily come out in order.
After I wrote that I figured that might be the case. The song "Take Me Home, Country Roads" was written by Bill and Taffy Danoff, but Denver's recording may be the original recording of it.
Awesome video! I'm in Front Royal and have taken the bike on many if not all the roads you were on! Good stuff.
This is awesome! I live about 15 minutes from here, in Maryland. I come down and drive through here a lot when I just want to have a nice relaxing cruise. I desperately wish that I had a motorcycle though...I feel like all of these amazing back roads I have found would be so enjoyable on a motorcycle! Maybe some day haha. As of right now, the insurance is far too expensive for me, and I don't even know much of the process for getting one. XD Sucks, but yeah, hopefully I will get to experience riding a motorcycle around one day.
Those are my stomping grounds. It was nice to see so many familiar places captured on video on such a gorgeous weather day. That side road that connects to Rt 340 is called Chestnut Hill Rd. Also across the Potomac River from Maryland Heights is Loudoun Heights. It’s an 8 mile hike from Harpers Ferry but not as crowded. Anyhow, thanks for the video!
Very compliment, beautiful landscapes and roads. I have your identical motorcycle and seeing it go at 55 miles / h, I guess it makes you suffer a lot. Bye
The hike up to Maryland heights if I have the correct name is a mild workout but when I did some 15 years ago there were places to stop and rest. Make the effort as the view will take your breath away! Miss the area, I lived in Lovettsville,VA

Have fun!
Was down there 3 years ago around this time on my old Versys 1000. Harpers Ferry, Antietam moving north to Gettysburg then crossing back to Canada at Niagara Falls hopping the Chi-Cheemaun ferry across Lake Huron working my way back to Sault Ste. Marie Ontario. I really loved the area and enjoyed American history on the Civil War. Also stayed in Rockville MD catching the train into DC checking out your capital for a few days. Thanks for posting, brought back great memories as I slave at work!!
Thanks Todd!
It was the lead singer from The Starland Vocal Band who wrote that song for the most part. I heard on Gilbert Gottfried's podcast that the dude had barely ever been in West Virginia, and he wrote it while he lived in San Francisco. Which is why there are geography problems in the lyrics. By the way, if you want to go down a click hole, the Starland Vocal Band had a network TV variety show for some reason...it's awful and co-stars a young David Letterman. And a lot of the episodes are on RUclips.
Funny, our local radio station was giving the history of the song just a few days ago.
If you get a chance this fall, ride down to the Highland Scenic Highway in WV. Road 150, 39, 220, is all a great ride on the way through. Be great content!
Just got back from a 3 day trip yesterday and rode almost all of what you just mentioned.
Great video as always Mario, love the drone shots for a broad perspective. Next time, do the hike, (bring some gear), as none of us are getting any younger & need all the exercise we can get! I know you get lots riding dirt bikes etc., but you may feel even more energized for the ride home!
I've been a gym rat for 25+ years; just never been into hiking. Glad you enjoyed the video!
Great riding. I did Gettysburg last week, maybe I can get to Harper's Ferry and/or Antietam next week.
Gettysburg is a fun one; especially for those who like history.
What an awesome ride. That area is so cool. Nothing better than drone shots for a perspective you can't get otherwise. Fantastic video!!
Appreciate it.
"That old lady's driving a roller skate!" HAHA, I love it. Loving the videos. Hopefully picking up my new(to me) 1290 Super Adventure next week, cant wait!
Awesome!
People bash Smarts too hard. XD They are fun little cars, and surprisingly quick and nimble! I used to have one until I decided that I needed something a little bit more versatile for things like travelling and such. If I lived in a city though, I would definitely have kept it. They are the most spacious cars I have ever been in, and don't even feel small at all when you are driving one. I love them!
*low fuel light on 8 gal tank* at least 200 miles til empty
Beautiful country to ride in. Maybe you could get a second or third job as a tour guide.
Too busy as it is. I need an intern just to respond to comments and email.
Are you still running your 1290 with the patched up tank? Or did you get the recalled tank yet?
Still patched up. New ones not expected until late September.
@@2WR Just talked with KTM today they have two tanks coming in next week, mine and one going to the east coast.🤞
Great video.... looks like a nice area
Mario
How do you do that route tree showing your ride ? Very cool !
This will answer all ruclips.net/video/L062kwLuVbI/видео.html
What kind of windscreen is that and do you recommend it?
That's the Puig Clear Touring Screen. No complaints so far
Nice Ride...
Very nice!
You never let us down. This was a great ride and now one of my destinations. Thanks for taking us along for this great ride. Ride Safe
Have you ridden to Reddish Knob? It’s by Harrisonburg. Just heard about it recently and will be riding there soon
yeah, but it's been awhile
2 Wheeled Rider you’ve been everywhere
Reddish knob is a cool place for pics and drone footage. Some nice forest roads to ride around there also.
😂😂 not everywhere but a lot of places
Great video! Glad you weren't stuck behind that car for too long......
I love that area, breweries, camping, hiking, fishing, riding, history. Looking forward to going back next April.
Have checked out that brewery since recording. Nice place and good beer and food.
Nice video, enjoyed it 👍🏽
Thanks Carl!
I am surprised you don't have a Yoshi or Akrapovic muffler on the bike lol!
Can’t justify the additional cost
Nice ride this morning. So much of our history in your area... thanks for taking us along. Btw... thought you might sleep in today.
Glad you enjoyed it Pierre. Unfortunately, back to work this morning.
Drone shots were on point. Only thing missing was a Harpers Ferry beer and food review.
Thanks and unfortunately didn't film that video which happened 2-3 weeks later.
Great video thanks for sharing. Looks like a nice ride
"That old lady's driving a rollerskate" LOL
