Cut the vinyl siding away in the mounting pad footprints? Sawsall, recip saw, etc? Lot easier than conjuring up a band saw and buying the PVC, sanding. Then caulk the seams.
yes, you could do that, add J trim and flashing, and attach solid blocking for the awning to mount too, and not have to worry about catching studs with the pre drilled holes in the awning.
I see these prefab awnings offered more and more in home improvement stores so great idea to cover this in a video. Also I gave the same siding and wow, I would have never thought of that awesome template!
That's a nice-looking awning, and well-installed, especially with those blocks for the vinyl siding. If I were the owner of that house, I'd have prioritized a replacement porch and stairs, because they looking like they're about ready to fall apart; have no handrail; and often, the size of the deck determines the size of the awning.
Nice job Nathan! She was a great helper too! I think it was a very nice looking awning, matching the style of the house... with an updated look though. Great choice on your part!
And having someone hold the pieces instead of something fixed for the pieces to rest on after going through the saw. Maybe the owner got very clear instructions, but it seems risky -- they might drift slightly to either side, leading to kickback. And then also not using a push stick at one point. I'd really like to see some safer job site table saw practices being featured.
How do you know the position of the studs under in the siding and plywood? And were the screws in the top middle hitting a stud? If not, why wasn't there an anchor?
@@boblablah That's not right. If there's any kind of serious snowfall, those fasteners that only have the sheathing to hold on to will get pulled right out.
@@AlMai222 As a structural engineer on YT, I am also concerned about the lack of support. Screwing into plywood or OSB doesn't cut it. The wood framing behind has to be designed to carry the snow load.
Nice project and I like the design of the awning. I however would have liked to see some sort of support ‘beams’ running from the front to the back of either side of the inside opening for a little more structural look.
I could not bandsaw that profile if my career depended on it. That board would be all skeewampus. I would just duct tape the awning on just to watch Tommy cringe 😮.
folks, I hate to be a safety nanny, but take it from a DIYer with a slice across the back of the hand, DO NOT USE A TABLE SAW WITHOUT A RIVING KNIFE. it is not worth it. And the riving knife takes literally no effort to use. Quite shocking that TOH chose not to use one here.
@@user-cp4wn9dp9p yeah pvc is not structural, I think this awning should have been flashed like a window against the house with siding so rain doesn’t leak inside and it doesn’t buckle the siding or pull away and let water under the siding
Nate’s been such a great addition to the show. His detail and appreciation to the minor things shows he loves and cares for his work.

This show only shops at one home improvement aka hardware store and that is Home Depot. So this more than likely came from there.
I've been watching this old house since the early nineties with my grandfather and father it makes me think of him.

I agree, nail that down 1st, and then see what design and size of awning would work
Ugly awning
That is one horse$hit vinyl siding job.

I was thinking the same thing
Could anything else make that cut other than a bandsaw?

Is there a way to do this that doesn't include 100 steps and tools that nobody has? I need to install one. Thx
Seeing less pops and more nathan. Pops turning over the reins ?
One would hope so - he's turning 76 in January. Certainly deserves a break.
What is the name of the saw Nathan uses in this episode ?? Is this Scroll Saw or a mini-Bandsaw? What is the brand name of the saw?
Did Tommy take his Festool back?
The lack of a riving knife at 1:53 makes me wince every time

I was kinda hoping he was gonna make an awning, Tommy/Norm style. Nice little retrofit but not the construction video I was after.
If the title was "How to BUILD and install an awning" then I could understand your disappointment, but it doesn't; it says "How to Install an awning".

Id like to see 12" of snow piled on that thing and it not get pulled right off because it's just anchored in osb...what a joke

Why is he just exhausting the pvc saw dust on to the ground? Isn’t that something you would want to catch with a vacuum attached?

Clear awning? Good luck cleaning that up every 10 days.
If it's a rainy area, it tends to stay suprisingly clean. There will always be dirt, but it's nothing crazy...
@@Bremend it's always the same area
Try hanging a bird feeder above the awning. It will be opaque very soon.
But at least you can see what the birds had for breakfast. LoL
That's going to shed nothing too high. And not enough overhang for coverage. Please bring back the OG of this old house
Hmmmmmm, awning for a nail salon.
WTH? searching for installation of an awning...and you get a simple one and then make your own block for the siding???
I would want side walls on that awning, WAYYYY too open
Yep, and doesn't extend very far from the house. Unless the rain is falling straight down it looks like they're going to get wet anyway.
