Hello, Mr. Shepherd. I have a question. I am left- handed, and I am looking to buy a lute. Are there left-handed lutes, or do I have to play one right-handed?
Most lute models are handed, because of differences in the soundboard thicknessing and bracing, bridge slope(i.e. string height in relation to the soundboard) and even neck angle relative to the centerline of the instrument. Other models aren't handed, but I'm yet to see one. You'd either have to learn to play right handed or comission a left handed lute. Finding a left handed lute for sale or loan would be very difficult.
I would recommend having yours custom made. Jo Dusepo is a lute and early instrument luthier. She has a website and ships worldwide. She has amazing samples of her instruments in action in her RUclips channel.
I bought mine at Muzzikon and they have left handed options. The actual store is in Ireland, but they sell and ship worldwide through their web page. I’m in Mexico and mine arrived with no problem. Good luck.
I’m a total beginner and I’m so glad I found your channel. Thanks a lot for your clear and detailed explanations.
Thank you so much for these instructional video’s. Very helpful indeed!
Hi Martin, nice video and fairly well instructions. Thanks a lot for that.
btw: what is the title of the song which one hears at the end of the video?
The piece is a ricercar by Francesco da Milano (Ness 15). You can hear a better version on my CD - have a look at www.luteshop.co.uk/fantasia

Don't chords have at least three notes? Otherwise it's a dyad.
