  • Day care centers play an important role in the GDR. It is very important that women also join the workforce, not only in terms of gender equality, but also for the state economy and the well-being of the families. In order to make this possible, children are introduced to state-owned day cares at a very young age. Due to government funding, no costs are induced on the families. Through these facilities, the SED is able to influence the upbringing of the youngest citizens at an early stage.
In the day care centers, the teacher is responsible for feeding the toddlers, for putting them on the pot or toilet, for combing, washing, and dressing them and to put them down for a nap.
