English native speakers struggle speaking German 😅. To speak German you need tough jaw muscles unlike English which is so soft. Fact is anybody that speaks any other languages apart from English easily masters German faster.
Nah, it depends on the person. I speak German fluently with hardly an accent. I’m American but have German on my mom’s side, although I wasn’t taught it growing up. First I learned Spanish in junior high and high schools, then I took German intensively in college and spent summers in there (motivated by having a German girlfriend). Being immersed in it I picked it up very quickly. In uni I read Goethe, Mann, Kafka, Hesse. Mastering “literary” German is quite tough of course, and I have forgotten a lot of advanced grammar and so on. Use it or lose it. But conversational German has always come quite naturally to me. I’m not sure why, except that I think I have a good ear for hearing sounds and reproducing them. I’m learning Russian now and although the grammar is daunting, the pronunciation is actually very regular and the standard accent is easy to reproduce. I think what many students of languages are not taught well enough or forget to do is *listen* - listen, listen, listen all the time to native speakers. Start speaking with them and put down the books. Book learning can be important, but isn’t strictly necessary just to become conversant. And you’ll be able to pronounce any place names for sure! English (especially UK place names) can be one of the biggest challenges, as they’re often pronounced non-phonetically and sometimes you just have to ask someone who knows! /long rambling comment…got carried away 😊
Elena won this challenge, Aryna would be better if Ons didn't distract her. Naomi and Ons were OK. Coco and Jessica were just bad at this. Iga likes WTA challenges, so it's a pity she's not there. I wonder how good she would be at this. She would probably give a serious try at this.😉
The Americans are really horrible at this. I’m surprised as German is the most common ethnicity in the US. I can read and speak German, and it looks so easy - just pronounce each syllable, like any other language. But some of them don’t even seem to know that -loch in German is very close to loch in Scotland. At least they’re all very good at tennis! 😅
Most ethnic groups of people in the US lose their ethnic language after one generation, certainly by the 2nd generation born here. In general there's little, if any, use for those languages here, especially German, plus the vast majority of Americans don't even have passports, and legal immigrants often know some English when they get here. I enjoyed learning a little German when I lived there, but Italian is much more useful in the US in the long run, plus it sounds so beautiful! Spanish is our second language by default because of illegal immigration from countries close to us, but many of them lose their language after 1-2 generations, too.
55% of all Tunisian diaspora live in France, only 6,6% live in Germany. That's almost a million in France to around 100 thousands in Germany. Tunisians are extremely versatile and able to integrate anywhere unlike most other nationalities where you always hear trouble.
