Thanks Warren, I'm glad that I can help someone with this. Hopefully yours holds out. We tried to boroscope the sprocket before tearing it apart and we could only see the crank sprocket, and the oil drain is elevated so no metal bits ever came out with the oil.
you are right! it is virtually impoossible to see the gear in question with a borescope, even though theres a bulletin from mercedes telling you to do so.
Mine used oil at 90000 requiring piston rings and valve stem seals as well as new sprockets.( Despite hugely expensive oil changes at correct intervals) I certainly won't be buying another Mercedes because the quality of their cars is so poor compared to BMW. Replaced it with a 635d which is better in every respect.
I have had the privelige of working on a few different versions of this engine, both v6 and v8 versions. I remove 2 out of 3 layers of the exposed head gasket because it always seems to pinch and end up out of alignment. I then clean both sides of the remaining oart of the head gasket, then apply the mercedes rtv to both sides of the head gasket, apply rtv to the frt cover, then assemble. Removing 2 of 3 sections of the head gasket makes timing cover alignment so much easier.
I dont know if you can see it in the video or not, but my impulse wheels were on wrong which caused it to fail to start about 50% of the time. I translated "right" and "left" into german, and the german words also started with R and L, respectively. Then I translated "intake" and "exhaust" and the german words started with A and E, respectively. Since the impulse wheels were stamped with AR, AL, ER, and EL, I thought i had it figured out. Well as it turns out, the A and E actually stand for the german translation for "inner" and "outer", and this put the intake and exhaust impulse wheels backwards. It didn't cause any damage to the engine, it just wouldn't let the cam timing adjust until I got new impulse wheels installed, as they are one time use.
sickSpeed first of all great video very good info, thank you for sharing. what i wanna ask you please is , in this video you say about the gasket in between the timing cover (the three layers) did you say some shops remove all of them ? or just two or one and then just use silicone ?? thank you for your time!!!
Just wanted to say great job on the video, hopefully I'll get to your skill level to attempt this on my 272 when it fails... I did the cam sensor check and the sprocket seems fine so far
Jaejung123, i did not pin one of them before removing it. If you havent removed them yet, pin them first and save yourself the trouble of having to reset them. I was able to get it straight after welding up a tool. It was less than a full tooth off.
to sickspeed monte .... your videos are informative .... where did you buy your parts after all of this .... our 07 c230 has only 66 k miles and has check eng codes for this problem.
I've really appreciated your M272 balance shaft videos as I work through the same repair on my M273. Do you recall where you mounted your engine sling to pull the engine?
SickSpeedMonte, thanks for the video. Did you do some shots from the rear side of the engine, replacing the crankshaft sealing ring? I don't follow you with the stamps on the impulse wheels. Exhaust is in German: Auslass and intake is Einlass. So you probably mixed them (A to E and vice versa). Your explanation seems to be correct, but is not generally: Inner is innen and outer is aussen, true, and this is equivalent to intake and exhaust at this V engine, but Benz is building not only V6 and V8s.
Great video I have a 06 CLK350 a just hit 200k miles car drives amazing other than my suspension replacing again "very rough driver" so I'm getting ready to do timing chain guides rails and tensioner my question is can I just remove the front clip bumper lights grill radiator elec fans and whatever else might be in the way wouldn't the give me access to everything without pulling the motor?
Thanks for the awesome video man! What is your website that you mentioned? also if I kept driving my car for about 3000 miles after the cel and my engine is really loud now...what other damaged parts should i look for? Thanks!
did all your impulse wheel line up at 305 after you got done? mine right one is off and getting a p0016 cam pos sensor for the impulse wheel that's off
Stephan, If the engine is making noise now, it could be a lot of things. Mine didn't sound any different when I pulled the engine, but i didn't drive it after the cel came on. Wen the sprocket fails, it sends metal bits into the oil pan. I guess if you let it go too long, the chain might be able to jump timing and that could destroy the engine with valve to piston contact. What does the noise sound like? Mine is for sale if you are interested ;)
Hey quick question did you pin the exhaust cam before taking it out or did you have to spin the gear back? And when you straightened out the gears for the exhaust camshaft did it work? Also how many teeth did you bring it back? Thanks a lot for the info.
GReat video, i have to attempt the same job, my front timming cover cracked, needs replacment. My qestion is, using the e12 universal socket as shown in the video, do i still need to remove the cam covers/intake and exhaust gears. Or can i manage with the opening created by the front cam-shaft sensor covers. Please advice
The removal of the cam covers, exhaust/intake cam shaft gears are to assist with reaching for the bottom 2 bolts at each side (which hold the head against the timming cover) and removing the timming chain. If using the e12 universal socket along a long extention does the job i can get away with not removing the cam covers/intake and exhaust cam gears. I need to just the replace the forward timming chain cover. Please letme know. Thanks
What about if you take the transmission out to handle the rear bolt on the balance Shaft?, its a lot labor to take the engine compare with transmission removal, is it possible?
has anyone removed the three layers of the head gasket to install the timing cover??? i mean does it work ok without them just using silicone ??, thank you!!!!
So you have nearly 15,000 views; multiply that by $5,000 and that equals $75 million. Of course, that's assuming that there's 15,000 failing or failed balance shafts humming around the planet. Could an automaker handle that kind of recall damage I wonder?
There is a lawsuit pertaining to this issue. You can see the notice and determine if you are a qualified owner at: ecalim.kccllc.net/caclaimforms/mse/documents/mse_not.pdfDO IT NOW because you are running out of time and mileage. It's too late for me but I hope this helps someone else. I understand this is a 4-6 thousand dollar repair. Thanks for nothing MBUSA for kicking us in the groin.
I need the info in this video but I couldn't go 2 minutes without stopping. It's torture to watch this guy say "aammm" between every other word!! Stop it, form your thoughts before recording dude. But yeah thank you for the info.

Hey I really appreciate all the detail in this video. I used it as a guide to pull my m272 out also.

Just came across this, A = exhaust E = inlet, in German, just for clarity thanks Guys :)

Any chance you still have the damper holding tool?
I know it's been a couple of years, but do you have the part list? thanks & thanks for the video
did you ever get a chance to make the website?
Was wondering if you had a parts list for this job.

no - you need the engine out so you can unbolt the balance shaft from the rear.
Thanks for the awesome video man! What is your website that you mentioned? also if I kept driving my car for about 3000 miles after the cel and my engine is really loud now...what other damaged parts should i look for? Thanks!
He didn't make it, I wonder wtf happened to him.

Great video, I’m just looking for a good quality timing case cover diagram for the sealant path thanks
great tutorial tips, really necesary. But try not to move the camera that way, i got really dizzy. thanks!

😂
hi do you have a video on removing the exhaust manifold? whats the best way to removit. thanks!

What's your answer to this wuestion
Sorry, should read question

It still could be damaged in the adjuster though if you let it release without pinning it.
I'm having 2 misfire (2 and 5). My MB mechanic said this balancer is a possible issue causing the misfires. is that true ? 06 clk350 113000 miles
I doubt it. There are two specific timing codes that are thrown with this balance shaft failure. p0016 and p0017, if I recall.
SickSpeed Monte ... yeah I for sure don't have those codes.. it has to be the connector to the coil pack that's causing the misfire
Super Video
What about if you take the transmission out to handle the rear bolt on the balance Shaft?, its a lot labor to take the engine compare with transmission removal, is it possible?
Its not worth it when you figure how much work you need to do to the engine. The need to replace the oil pump alone makes it worth pulling the engine.
has anyone removed the three layers of the head gasket to install the timing cover??? i mean does it work ok without them just using silicone ??, thank you!!!!
Oh, and i havent made the site yet. I do have the pictures, but I have been too busy.
ONCE THIS HAPPENS ILL DRIVE IT OFF A CLIFF
Well if fucking happened!
Lol. Speaking of the devil, he's waiting for you at the bottom of that cliff. Lol

You can do that with the engine on the car
You need to access the back of the engine to remove the shaft
