With you as inspiration I did 5 tomatoes in a 6’- 3” pvc tube with 2” net pots and used the master blend just like you showed in one of your videos, they grew so well that I had to tie them to the ceiling of my greenhouse. When they were all said and done the plants grew to about 12’ in length and were great producers. When I cleaned the roots out of the tube it looked like a 6’ long blonde ponytail. Thanks for the great videos I’m glad your back to making them again.
I have FINALLY started a hydroponics setup with 4" drain pipes, and came to watch your hydroponics (kratky) formulation. Then, came over here and found you're back. I'm THRILLED!!! Yours have always been my favorite gardening videos. So informative and so awesomely awesome!!! (ok, redundancy there!).
Good points. Just saw round white 5 gallon food grade buckets at Menards yesterday for $3.50. It's like a Home Depot and Lowes only better. Personally I use 4 gallon icing containers from the grocery store bakeries. They're free.
My son and I are working on building a hydroponic greenhouse for his 2nd Semester AgriScience SAE Project for school over the next 14 weeks. I've been watching your videos so I can share with him the different techniques to use, etc. I really appreciate your dedication and time to this and also for providing us with alternative ways that are less expensive to start our greenhouse. We are on a budget for this project so he has to keep his out of pocket expenses to a minimum. One thing we were able to do to help us with cutting some costs was we went around to our local bakeries and collect various sizes of the buckets that the bakeries store icing for cakes, cupcakes, etc. inside. Some places we went to did charge $1 for each bucket but most just gave them to us for free considering it was for my son's school project because they wanted to help out and because they are required to throw them out daily due to health department regulations. After calling over 32 stores, 14 were able to assist us on that particular day and in 1 day, we were able to collect 51 buckets in total. Now the buckets did need to be washed b/c most places didn't clean them out but with a little bit of work, we had them cleaned up and ready for use. He wants to create the dutch bucket system but we also talked about the tables like you've made as well. Many different sites have mentioned going with the Master blend nutrient but you are the only person we have found that has provided a test comparison of which products work better so we could determine which product yielded better results. Depending on how ours does, we hope to be able to provide tips, etc. to his classmates since they will also be starting a community garden in the next few months at their school for this same class. We are still trying to piece together everything we still need to get started so any other tips, ideas, etc. that you can provide to assist us in this process, please let me know. We could use all the guidance we could get since we are still very new to this.
I am glad your back on YT, you got me into growing my own food for my family and its been extremely valuable more so during this time of the pandemic. I have personally changed the way i grow from your typical dutch bucket drip system to a flood and drain type setup, reusing the old dutch bucket setup i had already installed. The main reasons i made the switch was i am in south Florida and the algae was getting very out of hand with water being dripped at the top inch or so of the grow medium, resulting in killing my plants, so i tried to fix this by moving the drip into the grow medium deeper between 1-2 inches of the top, but the dang roots kept growing into the drip lines, clogging them up and causing the plants to die from lack of water. So now i use a flood and drain method, i connected the aquarium pump i use to the old drain line that the dutch buckets drained into previously , and i back pump the water into the buckets via this old drain line, then at the very end of my pipe, i have a raised standpipe acting as the drain level, which all the water above that overflow level spills over and back to the water tank. Gravity causes all the buckets to maintain the level of the standpipe while the pump is backfeeding water into the buckets, then when the pump turns off it drains back into the tank through the pump. The stand pipe at the end is just friction fitted, so i can use different height standpipes to train the roots to grow deeper as the plants mature because the bottom 1 inch of the 5 gallon buckets have standing water that doesn't drain off that they can continuously feed on 24/7. i also use a double 5 gallon bucket setup. The outer 5 gallon bucket has the pvc pipe fitting attached in the bottom with a few pieces of pvc pipe cut acting as spacers hot glued to the bottom to prevent the top (inner) bucket from contacting the pvc fitting, it sits just above the fitting ontop of the spacers. the top (inner) bucket has holes drilled into it for drainage and i just use a paint strainer with large 3-4 inch rocks filled up about 1/3rd of the bucket, then clay pellets for 1/3rd of the bucket leaving 1/3rd as wind protection for when the plant is brand new. Then i start off the flood level just below the grow medium level, then every 2-3 weeks i drop it down an inch to promote deeper rooting. last year I got my plants to grow roots all the way to the very bottom of the bucket, so it had access to the bottom 1 inch of water at all times. On my newest builds, instead of having hard pvc pipe running to the buckets. I use the 1/2inch poly drip tubing with T adapters running to the buckets, the flexible tubing allows me to raise and lower the buckets to change the flood level individually in each bucket, so i can have mature and new plants on the same system and keep the spillover standpipe the same.
I use the kitty litter buckets with the hinge type lids. I put out a video on how I make them and how I mix the solution. Of course, I had to mention your name a bunch of times because YOU are the one that taught me...about 8 yrs ago! God Bless, Vivian Ann on the side of the mountain in northeast Tennessee
Nice video, good to see you out on RUclips. You motivated me to do hydroponics and I set up 4 inch drain PVC with 2 inch holes, and a hole through the bottom to fit those grommets from Grainger and I can set the height by sliding the half inch PVC up into it and letting it drain to the next 1. I feed the upper one and it zigzags back and forth until it goes into the reserve. I even set up a plastic 4 x 8 greenhouse on the side of the house. Works like a charm and gives me all the games I can handle plus a bunch to share. Thanks again, and Lord bless you
Good Sir, thank you for inspiring me, I've just started clearing up a piece of land I've found for setting up a greenhouse for hydroponics, all thanks to you and your tips! I wish You and your family all the best! Love from Serbia.
Hey Bobby, are you going to do a video on the current situation in our country and the importance of being prepared? I bet more people will be willing to listen now! I've been called everything from stupid to paranoid to crazy for being a prepper and I'm not even a hardcore prepper! But while everybody is panicking and running to the store and freaking out cause the stores are running out of everything, I'm sitting at home watching it all happen on TV from the comfort of my couch! I'd sure love to hear your and Susan's take on the situation and quite a few others probably would too! Hope you are both healthy and well! Hope to see a new video from you soon!
Found your videos last year, and after planning, this year will be using Dutch buckets for the first time this year! Thanks for the easy simple way you lay out your information. Keep it up.
Soooo glad your back, with these times of covid-19, bet everyone wishes they were already growing and prepping. I'm sure glad I started last year, thank you Bobby!
God bless you with all wonderful happiness of this world, I'm so glad to see you again after a long long time . I'm really enjoyed your videos & got supportive knowledge about hydroponic system, specifically for tomatoes.
I remember many years back, Bobby addressed on video, subscriber comments about his "accent". He stated that after going back and listening to himself he couldn't hear what people were talking about? I always figured it was remnants from the cajun region...if I recall right? I had never even noticed till Bobby brought it up one day and lo and behold He hasn't lost any of his verbal charm!!! Love ya Bobby, you have taught me so much the last decade, I truly appreciate the many many hours you put in and the honest down to earth teaching you blessed us with. Hey, when the snowflakes show up next time....let us handle 'em....with love & kindness.
Glad to see a more recent video. Most I've seen are from several years ago. Your videos are the most informative for the average gardener. You take the anxiety out of gardening. I especially appreciate the tip you gave of Hydro Gardens. I've been ordering hydroponic fertilizer from Colorado for several years now. Such a good product. Thanks again and I look forward to more videos. Hope you are doing well and God bless.
Thank you for the incredible content you never cease to amaze all of us we love your content you're so intelligent about what you produce what a pleasure it is to have subscribed to you
Hello, I am very new to hydroponic, well gardening period. My husband and I are old (77 and 66) on a fixed income. Due to costs of good fresh salad ingredients I have started watching videos on hydroponics since I do not have a great deal of space or experience. I also like the idea of not using soil. We are in southwestern North Carolina, (border TN) and do not have funds for a greenhouse. Looks like the DWC or Dutch Bucket systems for the tomatoes, peppers and sugar snap peas are the easiest for us old folks. For different kinds of lettuce was thinking of the floating system. Looking for an opinion if I am making the right choice for growing these along with cucumbers and sugar snap peas. I have started getting my buckets from the bakery at our local grocery store. I knew about them as I had gotten food safe buckets to use as water buckets for our chickens. Thanks for all your videos, I still have lots to view and lots to learn. Sorry this is so long. Faye By the way, I love your accent, LOL
man its great to have you back bobby! my buddy down the road called me yesterday asking me to help him build a hydroponic garden like mine!! feels good! for media im planning on ordering a truckload of pea gravel this spring. super cheap and works great!
Glad you're back, look for a new video every day. Loggers destroyed my greenhouse and have to fix it. Feel as tho things should be started in south central va by,now
For those interested in inexpensive food grade buckets... visit your local doughnut shop. They use a lot of pre-made icings and fruit fillings. You can usually get the buckets free if you are a regular customer. They are perfect for a Dutch Bucket system.
Thanks for the tip about the doughnut shop. I live in a rural area and can only get one or two buckets at a time. There is a Dunkin Doughnut store to try for another source.
First off, I want to tell you that I really love your tutorials on hydroponics. It has got me so inspired that I started to build a green house. One thing I am not clear on is the amount of water that is maintained in the system. If I have a 40 (5 gallon buckets) and a reservoir that is 64 gallons. How much water do I put in the buckets and the reservoir to start the system? How often do I run the system? Are the roots completely submerged in water? Any help would be greatly appreciated. AJ
Hi: Great to see your videos again. I have a bunch of 5 gallon buckets that I plan to use for big beef tomatoes. Would I be crazy to put two plants in each bucket. I looked at the root system of some of your plants and I was thinking 5 gallons would be large enough for two plants. Thanks.
Enjoy your videos.Tried the Dutch buckets last season outside and had some success but more failures mostly due to weather.I have built a small greenhouse since then and going to give it another shot this year.I had a lot of splitting and end rot.Just wondering how to prevent that.
Thanks you are back again Great valuable information. I am from India. Kindly explain how the roots get oxygen in a floating raft system when the roots are always submerged in water {without air stones}
The water is flowing under the roots and recirculating. There is a big reservoir that feeds the rafts and then flows back. The oxygen is dissolved in the water by the water falling when it exits the raft system, like a waterfall. Or it can be done with a venturi or even a radial flow filter.
Glad to see you back! Did my first dutch bucket tomatoes this fall in my new greenhouse (Seaford, Va) with excellent results until hit by Pythium (confirmed by Va Ext Service) infection. Trying Hydroguard now but with limited success. Ext Service suggested sterilizing everything and starting over. Apparently, reservoir temp can be a big factor in pythian growth. Would you consider doing a video on the types of problems you can run into with hydroponic systems and also how to address/prevent/mitigate them?
Glad you are back Bobby. I wanted to make those pepper plants inside the greenhouse like yours. Peppers dont get any better than that! Or not that I have ever seen. With the Grand Solar Minimum starting (mini ice age), we will all need to grow our own food and grow it all indoors.
Hey Bobby, missed ya man, glad to see you making vids again, been a big fan for several yrs now, We too put in big gardens and can a lot of stuff, and love it, and I enjoy watching vids of someone with a kindred spirit, God Bless you and Susan, keep up the good work, Proud of ya both, MAGA :-) Mike D
Good job as always. I’d like to use Dutch Bucket to growing cucumbers, bell pepper, and eggplants. I wonder is it OK to use perlite? Please, please let me know or I should use different stuff? By the way I’m in Japan and my name is hamid
Hello I am venturing into hydroponics farming from my 9to 6 job. I wanted to know how many Kilograms of tomatoes can be grown in a 2000sqm hydroponics setup or cucumbers in a same area In a year. I am doing a feasibility study before I setup the farm and checking with other farmers if the numbers check out. Looking forward for your response. Thanks
Good morning, I am considering moving from my 3' tall raised beds to the Dutch Bucket system. Having watched many videos on the system, I like your technique and presentation the best. If you could respond to a few questions that would be great! How do you keep the drip valves from clogging? How often and how long does your pump run? Thank you and God continue to bless you!
Agreed that the plants don't care about the shape of the buckets. I just used inexpensive home improvement store buckets for my system, as they were only a couple dollars each. More than five years and at least a dozen growing seasons later, they're still in perfectly good condition and I have no intention of swapping them out for newer buckets unless they start splintering or cracking. No signs of that so far. Getting the seals watertight on a rounded surface is more difficult than with a flat wall, but it's still quite doable with a bit of extra care. Plant roots don't want to dry out completely, don't want to drown, and want nutrients and pH in a reasonable range that's fairly easy to manage with basic checks and some common sense.
Kroger and Walmart use to give away those 1, 2, 4, and 5 gallon food grade buckets (with lids). Just go to the bakery section and ask if they have any empty icing buckets that they're going to pitch. You may need to wash them out, yourself, but they're FREE! I got about 40 of them about 3 and a half years ago. I'm still using mine.
Glad to see you back on the air.
I am SOOOO glad to see you back!
Glad to see your still making videos!
I sure am glad that you are back. So good to see you. Take care and I hope to see you again soon.

Love your videos, Bobby! Thank you for teaching so many of us. This is from one of your old buddies on your "Tater and Mater" show with Bexar Prepper.
Thanks Bobby good to see you
Good to see you this winter buddy.
tractor supply is the best place to buy food grade buckets, last years crop was bad, about 1/3 of what i did the previous year, love your channel
that was a nice specimen you grew, especially for it being new to your garden...
👀👀 looking forward to this season👀 👀
I respect what you do. I am going to give it a go in NYC and see how much I can grow
MORE Bobby! We're starving for your educational gardening videos!LOL! I really do look forward to your next posting! Thanks!
It's 2020....time to have some fun !

Good to see you again.
Inspiring. I just recently started a system in my basement, and I second guess everything I do. Thanks for this encouraging and timely vid :)
I have a saying...... It's just a plant, what's the worst that can happen ? Have fun !!!
Are you going to start making more videos? And is your wife going to do anymore cooking videos?? I really enjoy you two and have missed you .
good to see you again
I’m doing kratky tomatoes, and cucumbers, and peppers. Thanks buddy. Keep posting I dig your channel.
Good that you came back, in that video it's just a plant I can do something like that but out in the open?
Yes, you can do this outside. Bobby
Nice Garden! Great Job!
Oh how I’ve missed you 🙏🥰
Awesome set up. Hope to have something that cool one day, thanks for making videos
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience.
I need to get the seeds started.
Like always , very informative. God bless you my good sir.
Hi: Great to see your videos again. I have a bunch of 5 gallon buckets that I plan to use for big beef tomatoes. Would I be crazy to put two plants in each bucket. I looked at the root system of some of your plants and I was thinking 5 gallons would be large enough for two plants. Thanks.

Oh my goodness very time I see a new video from you guys I can't get there fast enough!!! Lol
Thank you MHPgardener. I love your videos.
boy them maters look so good Bobby!
Love your videos! Thank you for sharing! 😀👍
You and them buckets, Man I am so glad to see you back. Do I see updated videos and new chem mixes in the future??? Thank You Sir.
Thanks you are back again

I learned lot from you, great videos for beginners. Now im wondering if that short is same short as 5 years ago 😜
That really amazing what you are doing...👍👍👍👍
awesome!really love your garden, would you like to do a indoor grow test for Mars Hydro led grow light?
Hey Bobby. Great videos on the Dutch Bucket system. How do the tomatoes taste versus those you grow outside?
Nice job Bobby you have any problems with the rubber grommet leaking in a round bucket
Please give me some more information about yield of tomatoes per plant in every cycle and nutrition ratio in water. Thanks
Glad you are back Bobby. I wanted to make those pepper plants inside the greenhouse like yours. Peppers dont get any better than that! Or not that I have ever seen. With the Grand Solar Minimum starting (mini ice age), we will all need to grow our own food and grow it all indoors.
"You ain't gonna come out there with a blowtorch" LOL Sarcasm for the paranoid.
We’ve missed you, Bobby. That tomato plant looks like a tree.

@@mhpgardener Hey, be good excuse for a brand new shiny pole barn, ;-b
Good job as always. I’d like to use Dutch Bucket to growing cucumbers, bell pepper, and eggplants. I wonder is it OK to use perlite? Please, please let me know or I should use different stuff?
By the way I’m in Japan and my name is hamid
Hamid Mottaghizad Yes you can use perlite
Thank you
Hell ya! He's Back!
Thanks
You are the King!
Good morning,
I am considering moving from my 3' tall raised beds to the Dutch Bucket system. Having watched many videos on the system, I like your technique and presentation the best. If you could respond to a few questions that would be great!
How do you keep the drip valves from clogging?
How often and how long does your pump run?
Thank you and God continue to bless you!
I can just see it now
News at 11:00 unexplained disappearance of trash cans thru out the cities lol..grow tomatoes grow.
good to see u back
Agreed that the plants don't care about the shape of the buckets.
I'm glad you are still growing these Bobby! Good to hear from you again!
I do a lot of things that never get to video, just a very busy life. Still learning and trying to find ways to contribute. Thanks.
Bobby, Thanks for the vid......
Hay that's nice and awsom. In India one farmer has grown tomatoes in NFT.☺
