Why traffic is safe 1. Two hands on handlebars, so you can't get your phone out to text 2. Not many traffic lights, so you actually have to see traffic, rather that barging forward blindly at green like in America. 3. Traffic lights have TIMERS!!! 4. See how scary it is? Know how scary walking feels when you're drunk? Add them together= out of the question. Get a taxi.
I personally refuse to drive in a place where the vast majority of drivers are irresponsible idiots who couldn't care less about the safety of people around them. If only I could be the person in charge of traffic I'd impose painful fines for any violation of traffic rules. That would teach them that rules, as constraining as they may be, at least guarantee safety to the majority. Meanwhile, what you're getting in Vietnam is roads which are pointless war zones where not getting killed or injured is some kind of achievement.
I stayed at the same hotel from July 17-21, 2015. A short walk to Ben Thanh Market. My friends came and picked me up and I actually rode on the back of a scooter in all that traffic. I survived. Never in my wildest dreams I ever thought I would ride on the back of a scooter in Saigon. I must be crazy because I am not Vietnamese.
at 1:30 there is a traffic light at the corner of bus station and people stopped for the red light, not really an accident happened there. :) Obviously, when the light turns green, both opposite sides starts to run, they'd turn left or right or go straight forward as they want. No signal is the point here. I think so. :)
Honestly, It's normal in VN ^^ If u're a native person, u're never feel confused or scared and more confident to cross the road easily. It doesn't look like dangerous cuz people riding their motorbike or scooter here always see and sworn u. And I think it's chance to riding a motorbike although u don't have any driving licence, just enjoy :)
+Khoa Nguyen I don't think that is the intention of this video. I have been to Saigon and seen worst traffic condition, yet in spite of that, traffic moves and there is little jam, and a very low accident rate. That I think is what this video is about, in spite of the seemingly chaotic situation, traffic still flows, and that is what matters
I actually do not know how to address this video clip. Thanks for posting but I'm totally speechless. My best jab would probably be Ringling Brother and Barnum and Bailey Circus "Unplugged"
"They all find their own way to go" ... I didn't think of it like that. And they all seem to respect that method. What a socially different way of driving.
Thing is: Since there are no rules, driving a car is like having a tank. You just drive your car where you want and the mopeds will make space for you. I was on a vacation in 2010 and it was amazing to see. Also it was extremely frightening to just walk out in traffic like that the first times, but eventually you get used to it.
I thought so too. I never saw an accident for the first few months I lived there. One day I went to the hospital and saw the other side of the story: an entire waiting room full of people with substantial injuries and "motobike" helmets.
When traffic lights break down in Britain this is the sort of behavior you get. Everyone just slows down, watches out and finds a way through. It's just human nature. I'd say it's safer than having cars smashing into each other trying to make the lights.
I've even seen drivers from opposing directions work together to let pedestrians cross when lights aren't functioning. The key is giving drivers the freedom to make their own judgement, rather than treating them like cattle.
I remember in Purerto Princesa Palawan Philippines. I saw 1 motorbike, it had the mother, father and their 4 children sandwiched on, none wearing helmets.
It's very ignorant to think there are not rules, of course there are rules to the road in Vietnam. I thought the same thing when I moved to Vietnam. Rules: 1. Go slow 2. Yield to anything bigger than you, especially buses Most accidents you see are pretty minor because most people go slow.
0:20 "Almost an accident" ?? sorry but no,this happen 24/7 in HCM City according to my memory, like i said, this city is filled with motorbike so.. yeh, they know when to stop,slowdown/speedup without the traffic light
Actually in Western areas like the netherlands and england they have done this on a trial basis, check Martin Cassini youtube channel. And the results are actually safer with spontaneous order than with traffic lights. Ever watched videos of dead victims of Autobahn accidents, Faces of Death did a whole segment about it? You use this in low speed urban centers not high speed highways.
I agree! It's not a race thing. Asians are bad drivers when they drive in America because they are used to a different way. Just like if Americans go there, they would be the bad driver because they are used to a different way. :)
in the west we spend millions on traffic lights and other traffic regulations, result: total traffic jams. In Vietnam they leave the people free, result: everybody is on the move.
@sevenbillionppl you mean that in the west, the car driver has more rights? in the east, if a person gets knocked down... its always the driver's fault
the reason why they all have motorcycle is that there is 200% of tax on everything that they import from an other contry and that it is of corse angkor in their culture
Westerners will often watch videos like this and claim this shows how well traffic works without all those pesky rules. The reality is that people in these countries are injured and killed at a far higher rate per capita than people in the USA, for example.

After a day walking round HCM and crossing the roads, if you survive, you know you're immortal.
I really miss here and I like the narration for this video
.
I want you to commentate everything, your voice has sent me into a trance.
I have ridden in VN for 10 years on and off and only had one accident. I am american irish and have no fear of riding in VN
Interesting video
Very nice....and very well narrated
+United Computers Thanks!

that was beautiful hypnotic and mesmerizing. order inside of chaos

Its amazing !
They're like ants running everywhere working together .
Thank you for the amazing view .
That traffic, reminds me of LIFE. 😊
When did Borat go to Vietnam?

I agree with you, he just want to mess with the picture of Vietnam...

Wrong. There is one rule and it's called "compromising".
I actually do not know how to address this video clip. Thanks for posting but I'm totally speechless. My best jab would probably be Ringling Brother and Barnum and Bailey Circus "Unplugged"
Amazing commentary xD
+Flinch Fu Thanks!
"They all find their own way to go" ... I didn't think of it like that. And they all seem to respect that method. What a socially different way of driving.
Looks crazy but traffic is moving pretty good and the speeds are slow enough that seriuos injuries in a collision are unlikely.
nice video and this people are amazing !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
driving motorbike in Ho Chi Minh is very cool, once you are there driving, you will love it, you just learn to flow with them.
No rules, but nobody gets hurt. I agree with the expression "compromising" seen below.

@CptSchmidt there is a hidden road rule in Vietnam. It is called "spontaneous order" (FA Hayek) :D
is there such a thing as insurance here?
Holy Shit. Vietnam Salute! They gave a new meaning for "Dodge"
What if you're late for work?
Amazing... different cultures different ways to live day a day :)
yes, its not bad at all! once you know "rules" things work wonderfully.
there are actually rules in case you don't know, just not as much as in the US. They have less, simple, but effective rules.
your accent is awesome!
I thought so too. I never saw an accident for the first few months I lived there. One day I went to the hospital and saw the other side of the story: an entire waiting room full of people with substantial injuries and "motobike" helmets.
Nice voice mate :)

Yes, we did. Barbara was a little reluctant but I convinced her. We survived. Greetings to PA from NJ!
I remember in Purerto Princesa Palawan Philippines. I saw 1 motorbike, it had the mother, father and their 4 children sandwiched on, none wearing helmets.
cracks me up: the traffic light at the bottom of the sceen!
i pass by this junction daily during the time i was out-station there, this traffic is nothing compared to a raining evening peak hour
LOL THX for upload XD

not alike any Wrzeszcz crossing :-)
only in Gdansk there are traffic lights (ignored)
and no accidents, amazing
the commentator makes this video even funnier to watch.
So therapeutic
was there month ago
0:20 "Almost an accident" ?? sorry but no,this happen 24/7 in HCM City according to my memory, like i said, this city is filled with motorbike so.. yeh, they know when to stop,slowdown/speedup without the traffic light
no traffic rules some
les. anaccident
this traffic is moving. very
nice
good music :]
It's just chaos but in a very organized way
They don't need traffic light at the center circle, they're master of motorcycle
Braking skill is seriously needed here ^ ^
Amazing if this was England there would be crashes and fights.
That means they can actually trust in each other
Actually in Western areas like the netherlands and england they have done this on a trial basis, check Martin Cassini youtube channel. Who said asians are bad drivers? I bet those Americans wouldn't last 1 minute without crashing lol
I agree! It's not a race thing. Asians are bad drivers when they drive in America because they are used to a different way. Just like if Americans go there, they would be the bad driver because they are used to a different way. :)
coolest voice ever
My wife would have a nervous breakdown walking across that intersection.
1:36 I think he came!!LOL.
Song: Caravan of life
the guy on the bike drives like a maniac
It' s VERY simple. They are smartests than...Europeans and Americans and; and; and...
except per 100k vehicles they have 55.9 deaths whereas america only has 15
+Will 2 Win Most of those deaths occur outside the cities. There's also no road rage.
No traffic light in the this load in Vietnam. Good luck
They are a lot better than American drivers. But they're going slow enough it's almost like walking around in a crowded downtown area.
Pedestrians walk like a charm...... :)
Vietnam is a nice country. But personally I like Hanoi more than Saigon because Hanoi is less chaotic.
Việt Nam có nhiều xe máy,thế mới không bị kẹt đường!
Traffic light: Im so lonely nobody listens to me =(
its Ben Thanh market not Ben Tenh LOL
lol i love the ppl in the street are just walking all casually...if it were us we would freak
I thought you traveled thousand of miles to watch traffic.
in the west we spend millions on traffic lights and other traffic regulations, result: total traffic jams. In Vietnam they leave the people free, result: everybody is on the move.
traffic is freeflowing also because they're riding bikes
Precision, Caution, and you'll be fine!
It's order in the chaos. That how we roll :)
I think traffic in Viet Nam is a nightmare for foriegners.
not simply crossroad? but traffiic light work and ruled. autor from wild country and not seem before mach number transport wehicles? =)
@CptSchmidt im from japan and umm not really...
The car tax in Vietnam is about 300%
LOL how to cross road and survive in vietnam ?
looks like the future zurick commercial xD
really its crazy traffic
Difficulty: Vietnamese
If in United State
Difficulty: Expert
AHH! SO SCARY! YOU COULD CRASH STRAIT ON!
it all makes sense now O_O
This guy talking in the video is like dying to see an accident lol
that's the way of life !
@kamiaussie Major ignorance here. It's like watching Papua NewGuinea, and saying ALL Oceanian place is primitive like this.
mann O.D people have bikes just like in india and senegal. matter of fact, almost every country in the world r like this especially w/ bikes
The Clarinet has rules... 'nam didn't.
Very good description
@sevenbillionppl you mean that in the west, the car driver has more rights? in the east, if a person gets knocked down... its always the driver's fault
Ah it's only 5' walk to my home from there! And I go back and forth there daily
the reason why they all have motorcycle is that there is 200% of tax on everything that they import from an other contry and that it is of corse angkor in their culture
well I see no car driving the red light.
big cities when traffic lights when out or don't work it gonna be like a parking lot till police came
no police stil traffic moving good
OMG! what is this. this should be shown in american TV. specially in New York City. there is no dirty finger at each other.
Westerners will often watch videos like this and claim this shows how well traffic works without all those pesky rules.

wow
no traffic lights still makes no sense.
that is the bus station :D
They probably get where they need to go much quicker.
