Generally the ob/gyn will ask if they want to know or do they want it written down and put in a sealed envelope. If they choose to not know, the ob/gyn will put the gender on paper and they can then take the sealed envelope to a friend or bakery, wherever the gender reveal method is made and only that person will know the gender until the reveal party when the parents finally find out.
