+Dennis Rea Thanks Dennis, so glad you liked it. The woods are some of my favorite places as well. Nature really reminds you how amazing she is when standing in some of those places.
Wow, now that is sharp and rich! One of the first pieces I've watched on 4k display that popped like it's supposed to. I think the bitrate makes a huge difference on the raw camera. Well done
man you really ain't getting enough credit on these videos. I think Canon have something called "Canon Explores" folks who create breathtaking images with canon gear, you definitely should be a DJI-explore ;-)
Lovely shots mate. Well composed and edited. This could easily be a part of a special 4K program with David Attenborough doing the voice overs. Superb.
Wow. You really did justice to a beautiful part of the world. Well done. Great music choice too. Really enjoyed this. As a new Inspire/X5R user the split grade version was really interesting too. Thanks!
Great work Ian. Really great footage. The soundtrack is heartbreaking. Overall really well done. I think there is a lot more to be done in post. For example, some of this footage was obviously shot in high frame rates at high shutter speeds. Both lending to a non-cinematic feel. Obviously shooting at high frame rates and not actually slowing it down will give it a commercial look. You can export it in 24 which essentially removes frames and gives a much nicer film look. As for the high shutter speed, this as you may know can be solved next time with some ND filters. I especially like grad filters as it increases dynamic range for sky highlights. Lower shutter speed gives a much more cinematic look. As per color grading, I'd look carefully at how Newman films is grading their x5R footage as the result is absolutely stunning. Conclusion: you can fix the frame rate and color grading, but you're stuck with shutter speed which happily is the least hindering to achieving a gorgeous "film look".
Kimball, thanks! As to your comments on capture techniques: I choose to shoot aerial footage at 30fps. Although 24fps is a traditional film frame rate, I don't care for it when shooting serials. Footage can quickly become too choppy, even using the appropriate shutter speed. I prefer the aesthetic of 30fps for my pieces, as a personal prefernce. It's also best practice for stock, since much stock is requested at 30fps, and can easily be conformed to 24 with a pleasing slight slowdown. Secondly, I always use ND filters. Every shot in the video is shot at or near 1/80 shutter speed. I realize the traditional "180 degree shutter" would put it at 1/60, but I find it to have a touch too much motion blur, leaving it unable to retain detail in high frequency areas of the image. My personal preference is 1/80 or 1/100. Still has pleasing motion blur, but retains detail. As to Neumann LUTs and processing, I have a lot of respect for their work, but I don't care for their processing style. It's a bit over processed for my taste, often with an overly HDR look that doesn't seem natural to meet. It's neat, but I don't care to use their LUTs in my work.
Absolutely stunning Ian!! Just got the xr5....if I can do half the things you have done I will be happy. Fantastic scenery, great flight plans for shots, great editing. BTW what do you use for editing? Awesome, thank you so much for posting👍
+nick adams Thank you Nick, that's very kind. I use Adobe Premiere Pro CC for editing. I use the Lumetri effect for most of my "color grading" (very rudimentary) as well and really like it. Cheers!
What a great couple of videos. Loved your bts info, very informative and helpful - I'm keen to know you found handling the data, I know it's going to be a lot but how much, and how long did it take to copy over to your mac. For examples any much footage in time does the X5R hold when shooting RAW and 4k? Can you copy it over to back it up then process it later, I heard it had to go through some software first, is this right? And your second film, edited together is lovely, a great example of what it can achieve, I liked how slow and smooth you moved, allowing time to properly observe the landscape in detail. Well done to you and your guys. Dominic
+pixel.flights You get about 30 minutes of footage per 512GB SSD. Here's a link to a video I did showing approximate transfer times: ruclips.net/video/gYTrpBR-CC8/видео.html . And yes, unfortunately you have to go through CineLight to offload media, I'm really hoping they change this in the future.
The fact that this absolutely stunning video only has 5,000 views makes me really sad, especially when you realize people get millions of views just for siting infront of a webcam playing video games.
+Seth Hendrickson (S Hendrickson Filmography) Thanks Seth. I try not to let viewcount affect me. What I love is that even though the video only has a few thousand views, many people like yourself have taken the time to leave a kind comment which I appreciate. If even just a small amount of people watch this video and get the amount of enjoyment out of watching it that I did filming it, then that's what counts and makes me happy :)! Cheers
Hey Quick Question @ian cresswell. Is the 60mbps Cap on the X5R MP4/MOV just like the original X5 ? or does the x5R shoot higher bitrate in all formats?
Congratulations! really inspiring footage! Please tell us a bit more about the technical details: Color depth, how much can you record in 512GBs, best lens you recommend? 15mm or 12mm? thanks!
+Ian Cresswell Thanks! again! amazing work! great review video! you did exactly what all of us wanted to know! just one question. How much can you record on a 512GB card? thx!
+Ian Cresswell Is the 60mbps Cap on video on the X5R MP4/MOV just like the original X5 ? or does the x5R shoot higher bitrate in all formats? besides raw?
+Richard G Richard, as the first 15 seconds of the video states, for any scene depicting a National Park, I was handholding the UAV. If you watch the BTS video, you can see some video of me running around while holding the Inspire 1 in my right hand for those shots.
+Richard G I can understand why they have the blanketed policy, there are SO many people with UAVs now, and a lot of people fly extremely recklessly. However, you're right it would be nice if in the future they would allow special permission to certified operators.
Fantastic work Ian. Just read your blog on inspire pilots. This is the best X5R footage I've seen. Did you film in 30fps and slow down to 24fps on some clips?
+Nate Reutter I have. And the Production camera as well. The X5R is obviously higher resolution than the BMCC, but I would say it's about 1/2 or 1 stop short of the dynamic range on the BMCC. Pretty darn close though.
What Setting do you shoot in ?? manual ?? if so whats the stats if you don't mind me asking What do you like to run your Apature at ? ! Great work ! .. Also manal or auto focus ?
Amazing footage and editing! Curious, I have a I1 V1.2 rev D t600 bought it used from b and h. Virtually new condition...If I changed the gimbal and purchased this camera would it be able to carry it in flight? Sub your channel thanks!
+Al Diaz I filmed this entire video using the X5R on my V1 Inspire rev A (yes, the very first batch of Inspire 1's shipped over a year ago, with the nice woven carbon pattern). I bought the X5/X5R dampening plate kit (w/leg extensions) and that's what I used with the X5R to shoot the video. So, I know that a V1 Inspire 1 will carry the X5R. I will say though, that I personally would recommend getting a V2/Pro for the X5R, since I think the extra KV on the newer motors will come in handy in certain situations. V1 will work, but I plan on using V2/Pro in the future.
Ian, there are couple shots there with some macro blocking artifacts. I think in the sky and dark areas at the end. Is that the camera or youtube compression? Have you shot 60P in HD? How does it look? What frame rate was this one shot with? Thanks in advance.

+Dawson Boyle 30fps, shutter between 1/60 and 1/120. Usually 1/80 shutter. Aperture usually between F4 and F5.6, sometimes F2 in the woods and other dark places though.
Great work, nice shots! I would choose some more uplifting/epic music, but that is ofcourse personal preference. Do you fly everything LOS if your camera is controlled by someone else?
+the unique view Thanks, I realize the music is a bit haunting at times, but I really loved the sort of bittersweet sound. Everything I shoot is single operator, just me. I try to almost always be LOS. Very very rarely do I break that personal rule.
+adictiveadictive "Line of sight". It means always flying your UAV within your ability to see the actual craft with your own eyes. For example, not going behind buildings or trees, and not flying so far away from yourself that the UAV becomes too small to see in the sky.

+TheUnstill We really were handholding for the shots in the National Parks, so as to comply with policy. In this BTS video you can see me running around holding the Inspire 1. You can see it at around the 4 minute mark: ruclips.net/video/u8GdhiwIYQ0/видео.htmlm57s
+tallaganda83 Start small, try to save for a phantom series UAV. Try to sell footage to local businesses and whatnot. Continue to build your skills and client base. Set goals and you can reach them. Best of luck.
We didn't fly inside any National Parks. Footage from within park boundaries was all handheld, carrying the Inspire1/X5R like a gimbal. I'd bet nearly all this same footage could be shot today, I doubt much of anywhere we flew has been converted to NFZ. Maybe a portion of the California coast. They seem to be adding a lot of NFZ area out there for bird/marine life reasons.

Outstanding cinematic work done by you, thank you for this brilliant work.
Color, editing, selection each and every thing is perfectly done.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it.
@@IanCresswell It deserves more likes and views.
Best X5R example footage I have seen online. You can really see the fine detail difference.
We forget the fantastic and wonderful planet we live on.....Ian thanks indeed .
+Josip Vrandecic A beautiful planet indeed. Thanks for watching :)
What a great film. Thank you. Especially loved the lush greenery in the tightly knit woods!
+Dennis Rea Thanks Dennis, so glad you liked it. The woods are some of my favorite places as well. Nature really reminds you how amazing she is when standing in some of those places.
Thanks for reminding us the planet we live in! Wonderfull experience your video was!
Thank you! We truly live on an amazing planet :)
Absolutely stunning. Wonderful smooth flying and camera work. Great job! What a fantastic trip this must have been.
Thank you Nick. It was a super fun trip indeed :)
Thanks for reminding me why I was saving for the X5r Ian.. Great composition and post work too.
Spectacular! The camera work, editing, and color grading are all first rate. Nicely done!
Thanks. Really glad you liked it.
Hands down the best Showreel I have ever seen! Well done guys! Really good work. I watched the whole thing twice! Stunning locations!
Thanks Scott.
Christ, this is gorgeous! Well done!
+SiCKO Thank you :). We live in a beautiful world

Wow.. phenomenal series of shots.
one of my new favorite YT videos.!
Thanks Bo! Really appreciate it :)

Amazing shots and edits - love the winter scenery, so compelling. thanks for sharing your talents!
Thank you Paul, so glad you enjoyed it!
Ian, this is fantastic work! The x5R is definitely on my want list. I'm struggling with the x3 atm. Thank you for sharing such amazing cinematography!
+Cordell Briggs Thanks Cordell
Lovely shots mate. Well composed and edited. This could easily be a part of a special 4K program with David Attenborough doing the voice overs. Superb.
+Matthew Carmody That's very kind. I'm a big Attenborough fan. Thanks!
That's awesome work man. And the quality of this camera is unbelievable.

Well done. Well done. I am wanting to do that same trip. I applaud you for being able to use your Prius as a hotel.
Haha thanks Houston. I've spent many, many a night in the Prius to save on hotel fees. It works great!
Absolutely Stunning!
Absolutely great 👍👍👍
Wow!!! Really impressive work!!!
Thank you Brett.
this makes me want to upgrade my x3 camera to this cinematic x5r beauty.. great work..
Thanks! The X5R is a nice upgrade for sure. Cheers
+Ian Cresswell yes, it's stunning. I was wondering if you have the original DJi Inspire 1 body..or Inspire 1 pro??
Amazing! stunning video!
Great work. The X5R is an awesome camera.
Great Job Ian, amazing shots!
+JUCDVPR Appreciate it man.
What an amazing video you made, congratulations on your talents. I think I will have to get the X5 then!
Thanks! Enjoy the X5!
Great footage! Excellent!

Love the views! If you ever get back out in the 4 Corners area again let new know.
Ian! What an amazing quality! And editing is also killer! Always wort the work behind a video! Earned my sub ;) (a fellow "filmmaker")
Thanks, Loci! And thanks for the sub :)
You're the best!
Wow Amazing! I think I might wait and get the X5R instead of the X5
Nice work!
+Marko Šmit Thanks!
...stunning!!
Awesome Ian.....
+Jeremy James Thanks Jeremy!
Very nice, fantastic landscape. Enviously who can film and fly.
Beautiful!
Well done. I think this put me over the edge. I need the DJI Inspire Pro with X5 Raw.
It really is a great aerial platform. The RAW is a bit of a pain to work with, but fully worth it IMO.
Amazing !!!! Does the X5R can shot FHD (1920x1080) at 60FPS (SlowMo) in Raw format ? Great job @Ian Cresswell #ThumpsUp
feels like heaven
The Western US is a magical place :)

Love the shot...great job
I'd give some credit to god ;)
Amazing. Any color grading done at all? Bitrate uploaded to RUclips?
Thanks. Just a basic grade with one of my favorite LUTs and levels adjustment using Lumetri. Uploaded at 100mbps

Love the video but I have to ask is the waterfall is in Yosemite National Park correct? If so how did you obtain permission to fly?

Fantastic work Ian. Just read your blog on inspire pilots. This is the best X5R footage I've seen. Did you film in 30fps and slow down to 24fps on some clips?
+WaaProdUSA All shot at 30 and rendered at 30.
Soo I just bought one of these for my inspire 1 and i'm booking a road trip from seattle to la. any suggestions?
Is it the bryce canyon at 5:36? Gorgeous video!!!
We shot right outside of Bryce Canyon, but not in the actual park. There are still some very neat "hoodoo" formations even outside of the park.
I am impressed by the footage from the X5R! Have you ever used a Blackmagic Cinema Camera? If so, how does it compare?
+Nate Reutter I have. And the Production camera as well. The X5R is obviously higher resolution than the BMCC, but I would say it's about 1/2 or 1 stop short of the dynamic range on the BMCC. Pretty darn close though.
+Ian Cresswell Thanks for the reply - it's quite an impressive offering from dji.
Wow! Is there really a reason to fly bigger payloads such as RED when we have this?
For certain applications, yes. But for many things, the X5R is the perfect platform.
What Setting do you shoot in ?? manual ?? if so whats the stats if you don't mind me asking What do you like to run your Apature at ? ! Great work ! .. Also manal or auto focus ?
+J.M.V.C Manual so that I don't get any auto-exposure flicker. I usually keep my aperture at 4-5.6. Tap-autofocus usually works pretty well.
Wow! Thank you so much!!
Do you have a less RUclips compressed version of this somewhere to download?
If you login to Vimeo, you can download it in full 4K here: vimeo.com/159774722
Ian, there are couple shots there with some macro blocking artifacts. I think in the sky and dark areas at the end. Is that the camera or youtube compression?
Have you shot 60P in HD? How does it look?
What frame rate was this one shot with?
Thanks in advance.
+Jonesy Jones There's no macroblocking at all in the RAW files. Now, there is some noise in the blues of the sky in some portions of the video. As with any camera, the blue channel is going to be the most susceptible to noise. But, no, there's no macroblocking in the RAWs whatsoever.
It's ironic as I'm in virgin UT right now near some of your clips
+WaaProdUSA Have fun out there!
Hey man Beautiful shots!
One question was this encode in camera to ProRes or Cinema DNG ? thx
Thank you! It was all shot in Cinema DNG in camera.
Hey Ian what was the Frame rate and shutter speed looks like a higher frame rate and or shutter speed, btw looks great! :)

woooooauuu!!!!
Ian this is beautiful! How was your overall experience with the drone/batteries and the footage?
Thanks! I really like the Inspire. In my opinion it's the absolute best aerial video platform.
Hey Ian would it be possible to use some of the shots in my indie documentary?
with flying in parks and nfz restrictions, doubt you could do this today.
