    As a rule, I don't trust ANY preinstalled operating system. I always blank the drive and install fresh. Too many prebuilts ship with loads of bloatware and even some have had viruses, I think it was Lenovo that had viruses on their new machines (not refurbs).

    I have rescued many laptops from the scrap heap by replacing their "spinning rust" drive with a SSD and increasing the amount of RAM installed. The SSD would vastly improve your user experience on the desktop as well. Because of the slow speed of laptop hard drives, slower than desktops, many people will literally throw out laptop with a similar or somewhat better set of specifications to the desktop you feature in this video. Replace the spinning rust with an SSD, get the memory up to 8 Gig...and you have a laptop that will handle most of the tasks the majority of people need.

    I have been in IT my whole life, this is an amazing price. You could pay $124 just for the monitor. I hope they still have some left as I am getting one. And not that it matters to most home PC users, but windows pro allows you to be part of a domain. I will update after i get it. So, I just ordered it 4/10/24 for $136. Can't believe it comes with a monitor! Will update after I have a chance to set it up. Update 4/16/24: So far so good, I configured the wireless, ran windows updates, will soon be upgrading to 16Gb Ram. I will not be using this for gaming but rather home office work. I like starting with a fresh slate, I won't be adding alot of programs. I love the very small for factor, I was disappointed in only 2 memory slots, but for $20 (2 x 8GB ) 16GB total, that is all I need.

    A bit of note about these Wi-Fi adapters that are included on these PCs from Amazon. These are usually off-brand adapters that are commonly found on Amazon which often don't perform well and may have trouble maintaining connection. If you can't use Ethernet or can't put in a quality PCI-E Wi-Fi adapter, I would replace it with a name brand adapter like the TP-Link Archer T2U Plus. Also, these small adapters may not perform well with slow or weak Wi-Fi signals.
    Another note is a lot of these renewed PCs often tend to include an off-brand SSD that are known to fail.
    The GT 1030 may work with older games that can run on the GPU or less demanding games like The Sims 4 and Minecraft, but most modern games will likely not work on it due to their system requirements.

    On these old desktops/ laptops the most bang for the buck upgrade you can do is maximizing memory and a SATA SSD. Definitely can feel the difference specially an SSD upgrade. These things cost really cheap now there's really no point using a spinning drive for your OS disk. I had revived/ repurposed old computers this way which helps keep ewaste down.

    Blue thingy is serial port (as noted below) -VGA is blue but has holes vs. pins. 'DVI' ports are actually DisplayPorts which is why you can't use the included cable for add in graphics card, which only has an actual DVI output and HDMI. (And yes, I would like to see more cheap tech reviews that AREN'T solar related!) 😁

    My Backup PC has this same processor that I bought new when building it back in early 2017. It does the job for simple stuff but is super slow compared to newer processors of course even with an ssd. I tried playing Starfield on it with a AMD 6650xt and it would hang sometimes for a few seconds lol!😅
    The CPU is the issue. The GPU 6650xt, was being bottlenecked.

    I got one of these Dell refurbished Win 10 Pro and upgraded to 30 " monitor--I use it for surfing, viewing and editing photos, watching videos, and recording music. Best deal ever! I have told friends about this opportunity and no one believes me. I have had mine for about a year and the only problem is that about once a month it freezes up and needs to be restarted. I can live with that, especiallly because I can remember the "blue screen of death"

    One of the best computers I've ever owned was an optiplex computer. That thing just worked and it worked well. The only thing that I didn't like is that if you ever had to do a re-install, you had to upload the drivers manually. They were not permanently on the motherboard. So make sure you have a backup of the system drivers.

    • @HOBOTECH
      @HOBOTECH  5 месяцев назад +1

    Companies are dumping their old tech to be fully ready for the final switch to Windows 11 by October 2025. Can this be upgraded to Windows 11? If not, you're going to want to get a USB Flash Drive or external HDD to run Linux with a GUI. That covers your online use of the PC while retaining compatibility with existing Windows software.
