For rice we Bengalis prefer patli daal but for puri and roti thicker . But again it depends from person to person.. I am from Kolkata.🙂. Pure Bengali Hindus .

But desi ghee, asafoetida and corrinder leaves gives you the best daal forever.

Silvia bhabhi is right here. Thick daal is for Roti, Thin daal is for Rice. Also thick daal will create acidity as well.
Desi ghee should be used for preparing the tadka,it will take the taste to another level

For regular uses watery daal, for special occasions it can be both. You should also try Toor, moong, chana daal aswell. And also do add coriander leaves.

There is one rice available in Maharashtra called ambemohar, which is smaller and bit thick . This rice is fragrant.

I think sylvia is right, dal should be watery means that all dal particles should be completely mixed and mash into it so it can be eaten with rice.

try not burning the chilli powder by putting it 5 seconds before putting tadka on dal. you can give longer time to jeera, long, rai etc but chilli powder should remain red and should not be burned. Same thing can be done for some hing like chilli powder on tadka which is most important indegrient of dal and you missed that.

MUST TRY gujrati dal
1- take dal and take 1 tamato cut in 4 let it boil after mix that
2 - then put
lal mirch powder
turmeric 1 tea spoon
coriander cumin 1 tea spoon
6-7 spoon sugar
half lemon
idli sambhar powder if available
garlic ginger and chilli small cut as much small you can
MIX IT AND LET IT BOIL
TADKA
2 or 3 table spoon oil let it get hot
add garlic (cut in small)
then 1 or 2 tea spoon red chilli powder
add hing little bit
then curry patta
as soon as garlic gets red put that in the dal and mix it and let it boil for 1-2 min
done.

Yes we don't like watery daal. Mai graduation kar raha hu or yaha Room mai akele rehta hu khana bhi khud banata hu. As a Bihari student my favourite food is Daal, Bhaat Chokha,aam ka achar and papad. And I like thick daal it is very tasty make you feel like heaven 🤤

(2:32)~ In West Bengal (India) also we have an aromatic type of short rice called the 'Govind Bhog'. You should try that - it's absolutely different from other varieties of rice. You should taste it once, if you have the opportunity - I'm sure you'll all love it...
