As a former Unit Secretary I worked in a major medical hospital and saw way too many patients suffering with Sickle Cell Disease. The pain those patients went through and the high levels of pain meds they took were just too sad to watch and see them suffering. I hope the father goes and gets tested officially to see if he's is in fact a carrier of the trait.
Yessss... heart breaking. I'm a respiratory therapist & when I worked in the children's hospital I saw my patients suffer. Also, I had 2 friends that passed with this disease. The disease is prominent in African Americans, but I was amazed when I had a patient that wasn't AA & had the disease.

And I say that because usually in a case where they are testing newborns for various things and something like this gets discovered, they will usually ask the mom if she has the trait and if she says she doesn't know they'd most likely test her. That should be standard protocol from her OB as follow up because that would be something very important to know! (In case she was THE CARRIER then that means this particular guy didn't have the trait BUT if she were to move onto another relationship and the next guy WAS TO HAVE THAT TRAIT AS WELL their child would get the actual SICKLE CELL ANAEMIA DISEASE which apparently is a bad disease even fatal at times!* We do hear her say.."I don't have it, my daughter doesn't have it either.." So, I believe SHE AND HER DAUGHTER WERE TESTED after they discovered her son had the trait.. That therefore would mean that THE GUY is the one who is the carrier of that trait..
I don’t know how it works now but when my daughter was born in 2005, they did all of the normal newborn blood tests. It was discovered later after we were home from the hospital that she carried the trait for sickle cell. I got a phone call and a letter in the mail. It was unknown if her father or I were the carrier. We had to go to a specific genetic testing center and get out blood drawn and they mailed the resulted to our house. Both of our families said we weren’t the carrier and it turned out to be him. We have two before our daughter and neither are carriers therefore neither were tested until she came. This woman said in her testimony that she was never tested so it is still unknown which one is the carrier.

Yes, I loved this episode as well.. we had no idea my husband had the trait until we had our third child that was born with the disease. Oldest doesn’t have the trait, middle child has the trait we thought it was because I had the trait and then the third has the disease. Also, my husbands trait causes issues and he has pain crisis. It’s very important that folks are aware to get tested.

Our first child was born with full blown sickle cell disease and I believe that we should educate and counsel on genetic testing prior to starting families.

As a former Unit Secretary I worked in a major medical hospital and saw way too many patients suffering with Sickle Cell Disease. The pain those patients went through and the high levels of pain meds they took were just too sad to watch and see them suffering. I hope the father goes and gets tested officially to see if he's is in fact a carrier of the trait.
Yessss... heart breaking. I'm a respiratory therapist & when I worked in the children's hospital I saw my patients suffer. Also, I had 2 friends that passed with this disease. The disease is prominent in African Americans, but I was amazed when I had a patient that wasn't AA & had the disease.

*IRONICALLY, most likely its him! And I say that because usually in a case where they are testing newborns for various things and something like this gets discovered, they will usually ask the mom if she has the trait and if she says she doesn't know they'd most likely test her. That should be standard protocol from her OB as follow up because that would be something very important to know! (In case she was THE CARRIER then that means this particular guy didn't have the trait BUT if she were to move onto another relationship and the next guy WAS TO HAVE THAT TRAIT AS WELL their child would get the actual SICKLE CELL ANAEMIA DISEASE which apparently is a bad disease even fatal at times!*
We do hear her say.."I don't have it, my daughter doesn't have it either.." So, I believe SHE AND HER DAUGHTER WERE TESTED after they discovered her son had the trait..
That therefore would mean that THE GUY is the one who is the carrier of that trait..
I don’t know how it works now but when my daughter was born in 2005, they did all of the normal newborn blood tests. It was discovered later after we were home from the hospital that she carried the trait for sickle cell. I got a phone call and a letter in the mail. It was unknown if her father or I were the carrier. We had to go to a specific genetic testing center and get out blood drawn and they mailed the resulted to our house. Both of our families said we weren’t the carrier and it turned out to be him. We have two before our daughter and neither are carriers therefore neither were tested until she came. This woman said in her testimony that she was never tested so it is still unknown which one is the carrier.

She also told me to never mess with a guy that has to disease or is a carrier because the baby will have it and be sick and die at an early age.

Yes, I loved this episode as well.. we had no idea my husband had the trait until we had our third child that was born with the disease. Oldest doesn’t have the trait, middle child has the trait we thought it was because I had the trait and then the third has the disease. Also, my husbands trait causes issues and he has pain crisis. It’s very important that folks are aware to get tested.
@@cierra87 For your child to have the disease (not just the trait) both you and your husband must be carriers... As the expert witness explained, the disease is passed on when both parents pass on a trait carrying gene. If only one parent has it, only the trait can be passed on

My favorite episode so far after watching hundreds of these episodes! Simply because it provided a brief education on sickle cell disease! I carry the trait and was never told until I got pregnant for the first time over 31 years ago....and then, found out my ex-husband (we have since divorced) had the trait. Our first child was born with full blown sickle cell disease and I believe that we should educate and counsel on genetic testing prior to starting families.
