- Since the arrival of Martin's OM design in 1929 it's fair to say that acoustic guitarists have embraced the idea of a 14-fret neck, perhaps understandably viewing the traditional 12-fret design as limiting. However, from the sonic point of view there is no denying that 12-fret guitars can have very real sonic and ergonomic advantages over their elongated brethren.
In this video, we take a look at the reasons why you need a 12-fret guitar in your life and hear a few wonderful examples of what we currently have in The North American Guitar Showroom.

Just joined the 12-frets Club with my newly acquired Larrivee SD-60, sonically it beats out my Martin D-41 Special and it's extremely comfortable to play fingerstyle. In my case of classical guitar background it means a lot!
Guy playing at 2:33 and 4:30 was magnificent as were both tunes. Very easy listening. Last guitar he played was so beautiful and sounded great.
He was my favorite as well. After watching and listening, I decided to learn both pieces. The first wasn't too hard to work out but I'm having a little trouble with the second, I think it may be in an an alternate tuning.
@@procrastinator6902 A bit late here. The guitarist's name is Will McNicol and he has written some of the most beautiful pieces I've listened to in my life.
Check out Emma, Rain on qingming bridge. You'll be pleasantly surprised.
I have 2 12 fret guitars both of them are Martins . I have a 00028VS 12 fret and I have a 00016C nylon 12fret . I love both of them. I also have a Gibson J45 but unfortunately it’s a 14 fret , I would imagine that’s one of the main reasons why it doesn’t get played as much anymore. There’s something way more comfortable about playing a 12 fret guitar on top of the other perks . The bridge is pushed back a few inches into a more sweet spot of the soundboard ( or top of the guitar) . The slotted headstock improves brake angle at the nut which has a couple of advantages. Not to mention it adds more string tension also. They are just great guitars to have in your arsenal or “guitarsenal “ lol . Personally I think it’s one of those instances where they had it perfect before the 14 fret . What’s that saying my grandfather used to say to me “ if it isn’t broken then don’t try to fix it “ I would say that applies to them changing the 12 fret but that’s simply my subjective opinion.
Good little piece on 12 fret guitars and some lovely examples, I am a big fan of the 12 fret guitar - nice one Ben :)
Ben, obviously you got in your shop out of this world instruments, but oh man, these guys can play! Stunning!
Man the last player had spider hands. He’s a master.
Love 12 fret guitars! I have a 00, 000, both Martins, and a old Gretsch resonator in a 000 size. I’m shopping for a 12 fret dread. That’s what brought me here. That Froggy Bottom was spectacular!
Peace
Look at the Yairi DYMR70SB. I would put it up against any slope shoulder dread.
I have a Taylor 812 12-fret which I thought was a very good instrument then I heard you playing that Casimi and Maestro. Holy shit, those two are on another level
Great little performances exhibiting the 12 fret body style🤗🤗🌹
The Casimi sounds HUUUGGGEE!!! ❤❤❤
resonates like huge piano wires being hit
That first guitar looks like they extended the upper bout rather than moving the bridge rearward. Maybe it's the same end result.
I love my Gibson 12 fret Banner Southern Jumbo.
Wow the slotted head sounds good. I have been told that slotted sounds better because the angle of the strings from nut to the tuner is more
I’m not sure that break angle at the nut has any bearing on the tone unless possibly on open strings. The tension is entirely due to scale length and string gauge. The lower mass of the slotted headstock may be what makes slot heads sound different? I hate changing strings on slots, so my luthier built my new 12 fret short scale 00 with a paddle head. It definitely has “snap”!
If you want an affordable 12 fretter ( 25 inch scale!!) Try a Recording King! Less than $200 you can get that punch and snap of a long scale 12 fretter.....
Fantastic playing by each of the guitarists.
I’m in the Fellowship of 12 Frets with all my heart.
Great playing, mate! 👏👏👏
Anyway you can tell me what strings are on the guitar at 3 minutes and 44 seconds with the finger picking question. Mark thank you.
That Casimi looks incredible but I could never justify spending $25K on a guitar, even if I had it!!
considering you could get 5-7 really nice guitars for that price it makes a lot of sense
Ben thanks for a great piece. I have been unable however to find "Kissimmee' guitars. I know where the town is (Florida south of Orlando) but that's not helping so far. Any assistance would be much appreciated. Thanks from Seattle.
Hi Coby, do you mean Casimi Guitars?
thenorthamericanguitar.com/collections/casimi
Would this be a good guitar for Slack Key?
JUST BOUGHT A 1993 MARTIN HD28VS….VERY NICE…VERY POWERFUL IF YOU WANT……1ST. FRET SEEMS VERY SHORT OF SPACE. IS THIS NORMAL?
what guitar is that at 1:14?
True 12 fret guitars like the old Parlor guitars had a shorter fingerboard on the body like a classical.
What's the song at 3:16? sounds like a ragtime Tommy Emmanuel would play.
is 12 frett guitar better for heartbeat style playing please help
Is that ‘So Well’ by Dawes I’m hearing Brian?
Great ear there Alex, it is indeed! We're BIG Dawes fans!
The North American Guitar Phenomenal group 🔥
@@AlexFrancisOfficial Oh yes!
That Will bloke's alright isn't he!
you rock Will :)
I have one! 000 made by Manuel and Patterson.
What's the tuning for the song at 4:30??!
I’m pretty sure it’s Drop D tuning
Its all i play! A 14 FRET JUST DOES NOT SOUND/FEEL CORRECT!
Yes i definitely need a froggy bottom in my life.
Thought the Santa Cruz was far and away the weakest and flat sounding - no reflection on the playing :-) Tonally it didn't have anything like the cojones of the others.
Love my 000
Now play Gimme Three Steps
The North American Guitar and the guy as a British accent , what gives ?
The store is in London but weirdly does not specialise in all those big-name, world-beating British acoustic guitar brands that so many of us have come to know and love over decades of listening to definitely not Americana
I didn’t care for the Santa Cruz 12 fret maybe just the player and his style the guitar sounded to boxy
Yeah, it sounded to me like the bass strings had alot of fret buzz on them too. I didn't care for it myself
