  • Hello Hello Fiber Folks!!
Knitting a dress can be a little bit daunting, but it can also become one of your most treasured F.O.s
This video is all about some important considerations for knitting a dress of durable fabric that will fit and look great for a long time. I also share a pattern roundup of some of my favorite knitting patterns for sweater dresses, summer dresses, and a few true showstoppers.
For the record, this video was filmed in NOVEMBER 2023 (lol) so some of things I say might sound a little bit outdated, and there is a chance that some exquisite dress knitting patterns have been released in the meantime. Nonetheless, you can find all the patterns I talk about here and more in the Ravelry bundle I created for this category!
I hope you enjoy, and I love to hear about your dress knitting experiences and/or favorite patterns in the comment section!
Wishing you wellness and happy knitting!!

I’m toying with the idea of knitting the MELIDES dress from vert knit right now but it’s a huge undertaking. I downloaded the pattern and it’s the most detailed thing I’ve ever read

The only dress I’ve made so far is the Melides Dress by Ines Oliveira, a dream to wear ! Pattern offers directions to tailor the dress to your measurements and figure. So so so impressive. It fits me like a glove and I can wear the back as the front if I feel so. Highly recommend it !
Now I want to make myself the Nata dress, yours is SO lovely and I loooooove the deep back option ! Just need to find the perfect yarn combo !

I actually knit and crochet a bunch of dresses. Anna Johanna has some amazing ones like the calm dress. I knit it in a alpaca yarn that is pilling quite a bit under the arms. But it gives the perfect amout of warmth.
I also knit the forestberry dress by, fable knitwear. It's like a jacket at the same time but you could just knit it in the round instead. But i love it this way. Only issue is that the neckline is quite open so you have to be careful what to wear under it. I also knit her silverbells dress. Her knits are surprisingly quick for what you make. Totally recommend it.
Enjoy your dress knitting and have a great day

Kind of obsessed with jane birkin at the moment, so I really want to knit a mini dress inspired by her. I feel like blouse no 1 by mftkw would be kinda the perfect base. I'd probably make the sleeves flare out a bit more and use cotton, linen or bamboo yarn. Although, as a beginner knitter I dont really know how to make these mods. But I've been dreaming about the fo and styling it so even if I can't finish it by summer I'm excited to make my dream come into fruition.

I knit the Deco Dream Dress by Fabel Knitwear! I absolutely loved the process. I used a cotton merino blend, but it’s pretty heavy. I’d love to make another for sure.

I'm currently knitting Oh My Figure Dress. It's preatty similar to Easy Wide Rib, but with more shaping. It was on my to-knit list since 2021and its time finally come :D

I have knit this dress and i love it. It fits perfectly. Only downside is that it's so warm i barely have a chance to wear it. So maybe next time I would leave out the mohair. But i really love and recommend it

I was just about to comment on this pattern. Its also on my list but I've not had the guts to start it. I think I'm going to experiment with a shirt version this year. So excited to hear good reviews on it!

@@woolaroundtheworld I was a little afraid of mohair so close to the skin so I decided to use cotton-merino blend

I made the camisole no4 into a dress. Knit in linen at a tight gauge so it was opaque. I added waist shaping, hip shaping and then also mid thigh shaping so I could walk with ease. A really tedious knit on small needles but I just feel so wonderful every time I wear this, and being in linen I know it will wear well. I’m so hard on my knits, would love a wool dress but I would destroy it by sitting on strange things and not taking care to be careful!

I so agree with the sentiment of linen being worth the work!!

I am absolutely in love with knitted dresses, I had a couple store bought before I learned to knit and one of my goals for this year is to knit a few dresses. I am currently knittinh the Maid You Fall and the Dressilicious, by Anna & Heide Pickles (a bit similar to the other ribbed sweater dresses, but in bulky weight). I've halted them for a while because this month I'm, in the spirit of Finish it February, dedicating myself to a year old WIP. Another dress, but crochet, granny squares. So old that the tutorial I was using in the beginning was taken down 😅
I knew a few from this marvelous round-up but already added at least one other for my wishlist! The mamba dress, the KnitFit and the Sweetheart Revenge are in my queue, and I hope the Augustins n. 25 and a nata dress will also be in my future someday. Your nata is marvelous and definitely sold me on the pattern 🤎
Some other honorable mentiones: the newest Academia dress by Fabel Knitwear and her Forrest Berry Dress and Eglantine dress; Oh My Figure by Stine Jørgensen, LunchatTiffanysdress
by Ann-Kathrin Stoll, Glamazon Dress by Julie Knits in Paris, Follow Your Curve by Anna B Hanssen, Knit Girl Summer Top & Dress by Joan Ho, Sigyn by Linda Marveng, Aaren (particularly the white version that features in the pattern page) and Resolve, both by Kim Hargreaves, Sloan Dress by Norah Gaughan and the Love Magick Dress by Disco Stitch.
And then there are these free patterns: Merino 4 Us Dress by Luísa Ló (Rosarios 4), Lucky Dress by Katy Banks (KnitPicks Website), Honeycomb Aran Dress by Yarnspirations, Paloma by Rikke Eliasen (Filcolana website), Cammeo by Marie Wallin (free on Ralvery at Rowan's page).

A very inspiring collection! I've seen half of these dresses already and I'm planning to knit the Chestnut dress during this summer to have it ready for cold autumn. I'm looking forward to choose the color, the yarn combination and slowly to start such a large project. This design seems to be so basic and at the same time pretty elegant, that I think if my effort will be lucky, I would knit another one in different color. For me a dress is a perfect garment for any season and almost any occasion. And for the cold winter a wooly maxi dress is always advisable))

One of my knitting goals for this year is to knit a dress, and ever since I saw someone on instagram make a dress version of the sweater number 14 v neck I haven't been able to get it out of my mind. I would probably go for the regular crew for the dress but idea of making the dress on bigger needles is appealing since I don't know if I could ever finish a dk weight dress😅

I’d love to knit the Stripe Hype Dress (currently knitting the sweater version) as a spring/autumn dress in merino and sock yarn purely from stash (so no woolly wool as the dress will be next skin). That way I’ll have a unique stripey dress as well as keeping to one of my knitting goals this year, which is to knit more from stash 😚

I love how mindful you are about loaded words like „flattering“ - the term „modest“ is even more loaded with purity culture, rape culture and sexualising female read bodys in general - I would love if we as makers could find a more positive adjective.

      @highfiberknits  6 месяцев назад +1

Thank you for raising this! That’s definitely a term I’ll need to have more of a think about in terms of alternatives that don’t have a negative connotation the other way as well!

Thank you for all your hard work. Have a great day

Thank you for these tips, this video was so helpful🥰 I'd love to knit a dress, I'm just afraid it will induce a knitting slump😅 But the Mamba Dress by Ullen Knitwear and the Melides Dress by Vertknit are on my list and I'd love to tackle at least one of these patterns someday!

You can do it! I found that having some small projects to mix in was helpful or using anticipated “unproductive” time like car rides helped me to chip away at my nata dress!

I adore the Augustin dress! I’ve been looking at it for a while, but I’ve not committed to it as I haven’t found enough pictures to really figure out if it’s something I would want to wear. I think it’s such a shame because it’s absolutely gorgeous from the pictures I’ve seen!

Mamba dress made my heart skip the beat ❤ I have been thinking about knitting a sweater dress, extra cozy one (thinking maybe "Fat and Sassy Dress" by Anna and Heidi Pickles) but I am still not sure if I can commit to such a large project.
