I hope you gonna like this! Thank you!
@Edgar G. For the most part, Leiter shot a Leica 35mm with a telephoto lens, up to 90mm and even 150mm. Later in his career, he also got into micro 4/3 and other digital cameras.
Not sure it was in the video, this is from one of my source sites
Thanks
Oh wow! Thank you very much 🙂🙏 this is actually the very first time someone did this! Thank you! Looking forward to see you around!
Very good presentation.
Thank you! Happy you liked it!
I'm so crazy about Saul Leiter and his beautiful art....thanks for sharing!
My pleasure!
Perfect choose of music. Thank you for the video!
Thank you a lot! I am happy you liked it! See you around!
Was just thinking the exact same thing. The music is a perfect match for these images. Brilliant!
This was a wonderful video. Saul Leiter is one of my favorites. He falls in my view in the category of other photographers who used color in such unique ways like Jay Maisel, Pete Turner, Eric Meola. True masters in the use of color with their own style of photography.
Glad you enjoyed it! Today we would call him trend setter :D I mean he is being copied so often..
He doesn’t fall into any category at all-except the category of Saul Leiter. There never has been, nor will there ever be, another Saul Leiter. He didn’t raise the bar-he WAS the bar.
It was a great video! Thank you! )))
Thank you very much! See you around
Great clip. Thank you for posting. Liked. Subscribed.
I enjoyed your video. Leiter was an ambassador 🏆 👑
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you 🙏 See you around!
That was really cool! Sol Leiter seems so unpretentious it's refreshing. (I got a kick out of using outdated/expired 35mm Polaroid film in a three day studio fashion workshop I took back in '96.)
For some reason this video is being recommended lately hmm 😀
It's Saul not Sol like the beer 😂😂😂
I loved this video!
Thank you! 🙏 see you around!
It's May 4th 2023you really good thanks for this viedo it was very informative really haven't dove Into street photography. Really I live in a very rural area out here in western Oklahoma not much goes on out here . I enjoy doing b&w and color as well. But l like this man's work ... James Sharp
Thanks for this wonderful insight into the work of a great artist. Just one small detail, Saul said in an interview in 2017 that he went to New York to escape from his father rather than to pursue his painting ambitions.
Thank you for your comment. I might have missed that!
It was a conversation with Vince Aletti. You tube won’t let me paste a link but it is well worth hunting for.

Perfect, thanks a lot!
I very much enjoy your insightful, very well delivered, videos. Please keep up this nice work.
Jim Bush thank you! Glad you liked it, more videos are coming soon 😊
I have picked a new background for this one. Hope you gonna like it 😊🎥
🤔 isn't that Fan Ho rather than Saul Leiter though?
Sue Hodnett not sure what you mean 😊
Thanks for doing these videos on the great photographer s. You do a great job. Well done. 😎
Jenn Grainger Thank you! I am happy you enjoy them :)
All About Street Photography You have a real talent with your insights and communication. Keep going!!
Jenn Grainger you are too kind!
🙏🙏🙏 Thank you!
Interested to know what kind of camera he used to capture those magnificent images?
Great video too!
I am not 100% sure. He used some Leicas I believe
Great vid .... Fave Saul photo changes daily .... Right now my fave of his is probably ... Reflection, 1958
WaywardAce for me it is probably Footsteps or Taxi :)
@@aboutphotography Both of those are great. I got the impression from the documentary that Saul's fave was Through Boards
WaywardAce oh yeah I also love that one 😊
Finding beauty in everyday life
I just found your channel, and holy fuck dude thank you SO MUCH for putting so much time into these videos and sharing this information. Mad respect
Thanks you! See you around!
Good job! Congrats!
Thank you! I am happy you liked it! See you around!
great!!
Thank you! 🙏
Really interesting video and I liked the documentary very much. Having spent sixty years living in and photographing the lower eastside of NYC his body of work is a unique record of a place and time. However, Leiter makes it clear there was no 'project' or 'mission' to his photography. Like a magpie he brought home what he found shiny and attractive to line his nest. It seems most photographers of the film and print era lived in an accumulation of print boxes and slide containers which look disorderly to everyone but themselves. In a way he was right to question the value of making a documentary about his work. All he can really tell us is he took photographs because he wanted to preserve what he thought was beautiful. As he points-out, he can't really explain the 'why' and the 'how' is the individual approach of each photographer, so why make a documentary?
Yeah but on the other hand it's a pity we don't know many of these wonderful photographers and their work because they kept it for themselves. I feel like "oversharing" is also a problem. I guess you have to find a balance between creating art and showing it to other people but if I had to pick one side I would say that the art is there to be seen
Where can I find and watch this docu online do you know?
I think you can buy it here - www.innogreathurry.com
I had a quick talk with Saul Leiter at the exhibition at the Milwaukee Art Museum. He was a great artist and quite a character. Though his commercial work is generally quite good I suspect these images were made for his personal discovery & pleasure. He never expected that he would find a wide interest with these particular photos. He fortunately did live just long enough for the public to discover these gems.
Wow, that's nice. Still, I feel he is often overlooked. I am not saying he was like super famous, but he deserves to be known to wider audience.
Keep up the good work!
🙏
What makes his photo’s so remarkable is back in that period your fastest color film was in the 160 ISO if that
Yeah and also expensive 😂
Beautiful
🙏 thank you!
Thank you, great video.
I am happy you liked it! Thank you!
Nice video and music. My only critique: While you are talking about a Photographer, instead of us just seeing you- you should show more of their photographs.. Good job regardless. 👌
Thank you, this video is pretty old but I will focus on that in my newer ones! Thanks for your comment!
Good job ,thank you for making this :-) .....
Thank you for watching! See you around!
You said he became a photographer instead of an artist? Saul Leiter is 100% an artist. Just his photography alone can justify that.
You are 100% right. I think I thought “painter” or something in the understanding of what artist ment back then. It took some time before photography was taken seriously as an art form. But you are are right I made a mistake, thank you 🙏
No more instagram? link does not work? Has your account been removed? Changed?
Guy De Zeine yeah I have updated the name to instagram.com/aboutphotographyblog/
I will have to update the descriptions :)
@@aboutphotography added you, thx for your response! Keep up the good work.
I gave a thumb's up, but I don't understand why most of the video shows you when it could be showing visuals related to Leiter or others you speak about.
Hi, thank you for watching. I guess I know what you mean. This video is one of my first video. If you like this kind of content I suggest to check out some of my newer ones. Because I believe I have addressed that there.
I'm a huge fan of your videos man, I've seen this one for the 2nd or 3rd time since you published it. I also wanted to follow you on instagram, and followed the link you have here, and also on your website to your instagram and both seem to be broken or your account deleted. Do you have an Instagram where I can follow your personal work?
Thanks and cheers from Bolivia
Hey! Cheers from Prague 😊. Thank you! I am happy you enjoyed it. I realised i have not changed my info in all of those older videos when I actually changed the channel name. I will have to do it sooner or later I guess 😃 my instagram is instagram.com/aboutphotographyblog/
Thank you once again and see you around!
I can't wrap my head around photographers being against color photography for so long, and people like Saul feeling uncomfortable sharing their shots as a result. It's like being racist towards photons. Plus, one could say that b/w photography is easy mode (which it definitely isn't! just being snarky) compared to having to juggle color into a shot together with all the color harmonies, subject/object focus etc.
😂 haha. I feel like price was the biggest factor at the beginning and then everyone was just too used to it. Tbh I think color is little more difficult to make it work than B&W
@@aboutphotography For sure, color is a beast of its own :)
...and much copied in 2019. Brilliant photographer, I think it was through Ted Forbes that I first got to hear about Saul Leiter. I have 2/3 of his books and the dvd which I highly recommend too.
Sue Hodnett Yeah that’s why I have mentioned him in the video. The Art of Photography has pretty good video about him. Which book do you like more?
Early color is his classic book but I like the book which went along with his retrospective exhibition in 2012 (?) Because it has so much more of his work in it and tells the story about him through his work.
Sue Hodnett thank you! I have not seen that one 😊
Today's photographers seem to be obsessed by sharp images and cameras that will give them this?
If the image isn't completely sharp everywhere many believe it cannot possible be a good photograph?
Who convinced them of this?.
I guess camera manufacturers since those are the stats they are focusing on improving year by year.
It is clear from several of your example videos that there is no substitute for studying painting, preferably in a natural light Studio, and in nature, preferably from a master instructor and learning the form, structure, color, value, composition for a LONG ENOUGH TIME. A few how-to RUclips’s by a lousy artist aren’t going to cut it. If you have actually become an artist, it infuses every push of the shutter-whether the particular photo is a keeper or not. You can see over and over the richness, uniqueness of these exemplar photographers you showcase (vs for example, the latest Sony sample gallery on DP Review). It’s important to be able to tell the difference.
I think it is definitely a (to have painting background) But I dont think it is a must. I think it is important to educate yourself if you want to be good at something. I would not disqualify youtube. It is just a source and just like bad teachers and good teachers in school, good and bad book and so on. you have good and bad youtube videos. It is up to to pick it. But hey, going to well know university (for painting for example) is probably one of the certified ways to learn it. :)
All About Street Photography Yeah, my comment was probably over the top. Going to art school doesn’t necessarily cut it either. Painting nudes in North Lit studio under the corrections of a true master is something quite different. Being able to see color progressions in the landscape and being able to reproduce them accurately. Learning form by sculpting from a model for years. Studying Cezanne’s or Tiitians, or Caravaggio’s Composition and being able to make your own that don’t suck. This kind of of thing can give you the power that Cartier Bresson possesses- for yourself. This certainly isn’t necessary, but it’s surely interesting to see the correlation between this kind of training and the work of the truly great photographers.
Laurence Goldman yeah, it is fascinating how many photography masters had background in something like this
your instagram is not on line no more
you are right! Thanks! I have edited it - instagram.com/aboutphotographyblog/
better call saul : )
😊
No offence intended, but can we have less shots of you, and more of the photographer's work that you are profiling..?? A voice-over and the inclusion of more of the photographer's work would make for more interesting viewing.
Actually, that is something I have worked on in my later videos. This one is pretty old. Fee free to check them out and let me know 🙃
I will say your thumbnail is misleading and makes someone think Saul working himself may be in your video. I’d change it.
Well all my thumbnails consists of photographer and his photo.
@@aboutphotography I see that but it also gives the impression that the artist would be in your video working. You don’t agree?
makes me feel small …. )
You should rather feel inspired :)
Sit on your hands.
😀
Enjoyed this, as I would given Leiter is my favourite photographer. But, one small, pedantic point on presentation; your green screen backlot whatever is very ugly and off putting. With the garish colours, black outline halos etc. It looks like the cgi of an early 90s Hollywood sci-if movie. Would it not be better to just sit at a desk or e?
Yeah I kinda agree. This is one of my earliest videos and I have later abandoned that style. Feel free to check them out and let me know what you think. Especially those video essays. Thank you!
@@aboutphotography Glad it wasn't just me! No offence was intended, just my selfish want not to see it. Much better now, thank you.

Thank you 😊
Can’t see the appeal for this guy.
The muzak is very distracting.
