When I first got my rats at the beginning of the month I had them on Oxbow food, and their tubs smelled really bad. Ever since I started feeding Mazuri it has really cut down on the smell, and they seem to love it.
Sometimes the more you clean the faster they mark(pee) to be familiar with their surroundings. If you use the kiln dried pine it will help lengthen the amount of days between. Also sometimes can help to put a handful of old bedding in with the new so it has familiar smells and they dont feel the need to do extra territory marking.
Awesome video thank you!!! I don't understand why people say mice and rats smell bad. I use Aspen bedding and clean once a week and there pretty much no smell except a day or two before cleaning.
Thanks for the tips with the air purifier. I have pet rats so its not much of an issue on a lot of smell from them but i also have ferrets and it will help with the extra odor in the litter box before i get to changing it twice a day. Yes ferrets are a lot of work but well worth it for the fun 🙂🐾
Breeding your own feeders is definitely cost saving but man is it a pain in the butt! I don’t know how you go so long without bedding changes. I never used that food and maybe it does make a huge difference.
An old trick my buddy has done for years too is put like one scoop of the pine pellets in first then put the pine shavings over top that. It helps absorb more urine and keeps smell down but they don't have to walk on it
Do you notice any difference between Fir (with short needles)🌲 and Pine (with long needles) ? What do you think about shredded Hemp? I love that product, no dust what so ever, eliminates smells too! But a bit expensive. Otherwise you can get saw cuttings from leaf trees 🌳 since those don’t have any terpenoids in them.
My son snake refused to eat a 3 week old rat a few months ago. My husband and I fell for her and went out got her the double critter nation cage and a couple more feeder rat friends. They are 99% litter boxed trained and I change all the fleece and the two litter boxes every week. I do live in CO where can I pick up this pine bedding? Also my rats have seen a vet for URI's, lice and one with a pneumonia since I've gotten them a couple months ago(got them sick :(..). I'm currently using paper pellets and someone was telling me the baking soda in it is bad for rats.. My rats are extra sensitive and trying to find the right bedding and keep down on the smells since they are in my living room. I wash all their hammocks and beds weekly. I just don't know what else I can do. I feed them oxbow so don't think its the food.
Pine is no good for rats if they are your pets and you fell for them you don’t want to give them unsafe bedding that will cause respiratory infections.
I'll have to try that air filter thing. Definitely couldn't hurt. And yes the mice smell a lot more than the rats. It's strange because the mice keep themselves physically cleaner than the rats.
I couldn’t hear what kind of treatment the pine had? The substrate you like, that is. Dust free is what I heard. Could you please describe in more detail what is different from the toxic pine??!
someone in a different video claims asf's dont smell and i have not found that to be true at all. i'm feeding oxbow and using paper pulp though so that could be my issue.
When I was a kid me and my sister both had a mouse and looking back I think they were 2 males because they were veryyyy stinky and sometimes fought. One even killed the other one and ate his head. I found the clean eaten skull detached from the body.
1. Feed good food mazuri 6f. A balanced diet keeps the smell down. 2. I have heard vanilla in the water helps fight the smell 3. Inline fan (proper cfm for your room) feeding to a carbon filter inside the room. 4. Studies I have read recently say Aspen is the best the best bedding even though dried corn cob cuts down the smell.
@@ChrisHardwickanimaladventures I use concrete tubs and spend 29.00 a bag for 8 cubic foot of Aspen. I was going to switch over to corn cob (3.99 a 50lb bag) but I found two different research studies talking about their preferences of Aspen over corn cob and the fact corn cob negativity effects their sleep. Even with using two big bags of Aspen (29.00) and 2 bags of mazuri rodent breeder (29.99) i still spend less a month then buying feeders.
@@ChrisHardwickanimaladventures I have never bred them before. But I have worked in a facility that had them in one room and rats in another. Cleaning day was weird lol the rats would be on the edge of burn your eyes and thr asf where just beginning to stink.
SO THE ONLY PINE YOU CAN USE IS THE "KILN DRIED", IS THAT WHATEVER YOU'RE SAYING? I USE FINE PINE SHAVINGS I GET IN A BLOCK FROM TRACTOR SUPPLY STORE. IS THAT GOOD OR NO?
Hi It's really very useful tips I have a small laboratory animal breeding facility here in India, I am impressed with your system racks and tubs and watering systems. I also want to develop the similar things for my rats and mice, please advise Also let me know if I want to produce 10000 mice per month how can I plan my breeding Thanks Brother
Bruh for my other half and kids. It started with a dog, then a cat then bird then tortoises then more turtles then chickens then a damn baby deer then Guinea pig then random insect terrarium then chameleons then fish now fucken mice! My property is a small ass zoo already haha.. HELP 😵😂.. BTW I pay for the maintenance and upkeep of all these fucken animals
For my mice I usually clean every 4 days or so, my rats are pretty much once a week. I you really pack them full of rodents you may need to clean every other day, if you keep only one or two rodents in a big tub maybe every 7-8 days. If they start getting stinky I change them out LOL

Male mice can never be together, even if they grow up in the same litter. But I find most male rats are fine together, but you do get the occasional exception.
I would actually keep them together until you don't see them nursing anymore. I find if I separate mice or rats too early they do very poorly, best to keep them nursing as long as possible.
I've been watching a lot of your videos for awhile. It's really awesome that you aren't overly positive and are just honest about things...Keep it up!

I actually forgot to mention the food, the Mazuri has additives that cuts down on the smell, I think it may be Yucca root?
Claims yucca on the bag
Chris "The rats are pretty happy"
5 days later *all the rats get feed to the snakes* 😂😂😂

Dropped a like for the little cutie digging through the substrate! I had the biggest smile on my face when i saw that.
Tractor supplies pine shavings work good I have not had any rats die from it so it must be the same kind of bedding just different label
Pine pellets under the bedding helps a lot as well

I actually did that for awhile but I found it's easier and faster to have just one type of bedding.
@@ChrisHardwickanimaladventures good to know. I'm just starting up my rodents because my wholesaler was getting inconsistent
Hey Chris great video!! Where do you Purchase your carbon filters for your Air purifier.. thanks your friend Curt
I get them from filtersfast.com
What brand was the bedding? For some reason, I didn't hear the name.
Good video but I use 3 parts aspen to one part natural pine pellets cat litter... and I don’t have any smell even when it’s cleaning day...

Not sure about the different pines, I just use the one that has worked for other people.
I’m in Colorado looking for quality rats. Who did you get your rats from?
The snakes must be able to smell those rats.
Not going to breed my own feeders, but this is good info!

I would switch to Mazuri 6F rodent blocks and pine shavings, you can get them both at Walkers Cage and Feed.

It's kiln dried, basically heated up to remove the toxins.

Oxbow isn't the best food, you may want to switch over to mazuri, as well as hemp or aspen bedding

@@chasingthefish9042 Totally get this is an old comment, but another reason not to use the corn cob is that it is more prone to molding.
Would you be opposed to selling Kline dried pine online to your customers?
I think if I shipped it and you paid shipping you'd probably be paying way too much and could use something else for that price.
What would be the best alternative to the kiln dried pine?
would aspen bedding and an activated carbon filter (for growing) work?
That would be perfect!
can i put the breeder males (MALE) babys with him in a seperate cage when there weaned
For rats you can keep males together but not with mice.
Also Asf dont smell at all and generally they are perfect for ball pythons.
