From someone who has worked in Insurance for 30 years, there is no way the insurance company will have the kind of money it will take to make all this right. I hope they take care of the families who lost their loved ones and the one that is serious injured, and to all those who are now out of a job.
This will more than likely cost the tax payers.
Yes, I heard it reported this will effect 1000's of jobs.
What are you talking about?
The Federal Government already said it would pay for and rebuild the bridge on behalf of the state since it's a major port for foreign vehicles.
Why wouldn't the ship be adequately insured?
@Crismodin president biden said he wants to rebuild the bridge, but it requires congressional approval!! You've seen how they fight like little babies over the smallest things! They might come together and get behind this, and they might not!!
Amazing job by dispatch, and the officers that got the bridge traffic stopped from entering the bridge from both ends and saved dozens of drivers that would have been on the bridge. As bad as this is, this could have been a whole lot worse.
U couldn’t have said it any better, accidents happen and it’s better to save as much lives and risk a few, life isn’t a movie
Indeed! Had it happened during morning rush hour ...😱
My question is why the workers weren’t evacuated at the same time?

Why isn't the company paying for the bridge?
If you heard the transportation secretary, you would have know he said, first it's important the feds hurry and clear the path then build another bridge, then we can proceed making the company accountable through court later on if they are at fault.

If the company is found guilty......WTH?
The company should help pay for it. They are ultimately responsible for their ships and crew and their ship caused the bridge to collapse.
All vessels of this size should have tug boat escort under bridges as a safety measure just to prevent this from happening again.
The person to talk to is the guy who walked away. He's got a story to sell. Interview him.

The ship was headed out to sea. It then executed a 180° turn, headed upriver until it reached the bridge, and then executed a nearly 90° turn to aim the ship into the bridge.
No way was this an accident.
WHEN DOES THE CAPTAIN GIVE STATEMENT?
Well, technically it should the two lookouts, two pilots, captain and mate in question….
Captains don't usually give public statements when it comes to accidents, they are interviewed by investigators (in this case the NTSB) about what they claimed to have happened, and then the investigators later release the statements to the public.

No, I'm not for illegal immigrants, but it is important to allow legal immigrants the right to find jobs.
This accident breaks my heart, but even more so when I hear that there might be trouble finding funds to rebuild a critical structure like this bridge. The loss of lives is horrible, but this also impacts every citizen in the Baltimore area. This will turn already tedious 1 hour commutes into 3-hour nightmares, just to try to get to work. But how can there be a problem finding money for something as critical as this? After all, aren't we sending countless billions and billions to Ukraine? Studies have shown that pretty much ALL American bridges, tunnels and roadways could use some serious refitting and repair. We all know this, but it's always "we'll get to it when we have money". Meanwhile, just a fraction of the money we are sending to Ukraine, (with billions of it getting "lost" and unaccounted for) could easily be used to fix our infrastructure so this kind of disaster can be avoided or at least mitigated. But where do the American people stand in the eyes of our national leaders? Not anywhere near the front of the line, that's for sure. We elect them. We send them our hard earned tax dollars. But the money is used to benefit other countries. America's cities are filled with homeless throngs, and we are falling behind the world in so many areas. Yet our so called leaders still want to play their power games. Stuff like this is the result.
Guess it is the American way, helping others:). We can have no difficulty finding structures and bridges in the US built over 50 years ago. They lack cleaning, let alone maintenance. Fairly, the US was the best country in the world 50 years ago. Today, the US is still the best country in the world, but it is for criminals only.

So sad
That is very sad knowing they collected $56 million in revenue from the tolls of this bridge, but they was too cheap to build bumpers around the pillars of that bridge for the safety of the commuters and works. What is even sadder is that was so greedy by not building those bumpers that 6 men had to lose their lives for that greed. Whoever is in charge should be very ashamed of themselves knowing those 6 men did not have to die if they chose safety over greed. There is no excuse for that type of behavior.
All federal.safety rules are written in blood of those killed. So new rules will try to prevent this from happening again such as force all ships to be tugged til they pass major bridgeway spans.

This could have been a lot worse. Kudos to LE et al who stopped the traffic early. Thanks for a good report. Hang in there, everybody.
I wonder if they considered this state of the art in 1972 when they started construction. When you look at the Tampa Bay and the New sections of the Oakland Bay bridges today, there is quite the change from that old Erector set type of thing we knew as kids to the cable stay ones. But even old bridges should have had better piers or pylons protecting the supports.
Another thing they had time to close bridge , but didn't get road crew off...
The bridge is 1.5 miles long. The crew was in the middle of the bridge, with no shared radio connections. They never had time to get to the crew. The police radio recordings showed the officers were trying to secure the entrances and planned to go warn the crew, but never had time. They only had 90 seconds - not enough time to reach the crew, and if they did manage to get going, the officer would probably have died too.
Does anyone here remember the last bridge bearing an interstate highway collapsed? The only one that comes to mind is in my state, Florida when a ship caused a similar incident causing the bridge crossing Tampa Bay, the Sunshine Skyway. A cargo ship rammed into one of the supporting piers in fog killing over 30 people in 1980. The federal government partnered with Florida and built a gorgeous suspension bridge.
What a nightmare scenario.
What’s the update on getting to the submerged autos?
FIRST REPORTS WERE 7 CARS 20 PEOPLE, NO WORD.
They haven't been able to reach them because of the twisted and tangled mess that is down there, and because of weather issues above. The wreckage is still shifting because of the river flow and the tides.
What submerged autos? The news is that the police stopped traffic from entering the bridge.

See 4 long beams called spans that snapped in the disassembly and many smaller ones? Looks like many sections need just lifting and strengthening like the pylon ?
Are they sure there's not more ?
What about the people driving over the bridge who went into the river?
There was no one driving on the bridge when it went down
None, thanks to the officers on either end of the bridge that stopped oncoming traffic as soon as dispatch informed them that there was a boat in trouble headed for it.
They were waiting for another officer to go past them and let the work crew know, but the boat hit the bridge before that happened. (There's another video with the dispatch calls on it.)
The vehicles on the bridge were stationery used by the maintenance workers.
The police were able to shut down the bridge just in time - they're pretty sure there was no one but the crew, and the video shows no traffic on the bridge (you can see individual car lights and trucks crossing, and follow each one across the bridge). They also have digital traffic alert signs at each end of the bridge, and would have been able to send a message to those signs to warn drivers to stop before entering the bridges. (BRIDGE CLOSED. DO NOT CROSS. DANGER!" or something to that effect). The officers only had about 90 seconds from warning to collapse, so they were lucky they had officers in place to enforce the stop! There are recordings available of the police radio traffic during these moments, including officers who were stopping traffic at the south end.

What about the people in the vehicles that were driving across the bridge when it collapsed?
From the way it sounds, there were not any. A semi made it across right before it went down.
After the ship sent a warning cars 1:49 were stopped right before the collision.
the bridge had been closed at both ends about a minute before the collapse.
Police were able to stop traffic from going on the bridge.
How about all those who instantly believe the words coming from teleprompter readers?
They wont be getting anyone out of the vehicles that went in. The Key bridge upper support beams pan-caked the concrete roadway beneath just as it entered the water, then sank 50ft to the bottom, all this took place in 2 seconds. The hinge points where the bridge meets the ramp, was forced upward around 30+ feet and came out of place, then causing a tremendous amount of force behind it as it came crashing back down, separating the ramp from the bridge on both sides, leaving all the weight and stress on one support structure that wasn't built to handle the amount of force and torque it was under.
The vehicles belonged to the workers that were killed.
Traffic was stopped, so no vehicles went in except for the ones that were already on the bridge before they closed it.
the only vehicles that were on the bridge were maintenance vehicles and i dont think they even had time to get to their vehicles to evacuate.
i have heard that 2 did survive but haven't heard any names released.
@@emmettjames3829 i understand that, if they had a warning to get off the bridge and were getting into their vehicles as the bridge collapsed, theres no chance of recovery. When they are going to start with the lawsuits?.
Scandalous, firstly on the part of the shipping company even attempting to operating when there was clearly a major issue with the vessel, loss of power and steerage being of prime concern, but equally secondary, is why such vulnerable bridge support piers did not have some form of additional reinforcement barriers to deflect an impact be in place many years ago.
Sloopy practice all round.
A ninety thousand tonnes ship hitting that bridge would bring it tumbling down, .... it's not rocket science to figure that out, is it.
I mean i know that boat is massive but thats down right scary all it takes is bump of a ship and its going down
I saw an engineer explain it. It took out one of two supports - the weight of the ship and the speed (*about 8 knots) meant it hit with incredible force - not a bump. The trusses are designed to distribute the load equally. So, you lose one side of the support, then you get a cascade effect as the interconnected bridge tears itself apart. I saw an engineering report on how snapping one of the smaller support cables on the Golden Gate Bridge (not the giant cables that loop) could cause a similar cascade effect, taking down the entire bridge.
I thought we ant have no money to spend I guess we gonna print new money
So my close friend was working on that ship.amd they told me that the issues started at when the ship was dock so why leave the docks then
Can someone answer why didn’t the workers leave the impact area or did they get the message late.
I don’t know much about boats but don’t all big boats have anchors to help stop them?
What ever walk of life RIP ALL
"Ship pilots are brought on board in what are considered restricted maneuverability or navigation areas. They are local experts who are usually certified by the state or federal government to provide advice to the master of the vessel as to how to control the vessel, safely and adequately, through the pilotage waters, which in this case would be down the river from the Port of Baltimore"

Ship was from China. I assume so was the captain.
@@7.62dog5 The entire crew, including the captain, was from India. The ship was leased from the Singaporean owners by Maersk. Singapore is NOT China. It's not even near China. It's south of Maylasia.
From the information that has come out so far, it was some kind of mechanical failure that led to the ship losing power, and then losing the ability to steer. This was not the case of some drunken captain plowing the ship into the bridge support in a moment of wild neglect. The ship was veering off course and the captain had already called the Baltimore police to tell them he couldn't control the ship. This led to the police quickly blocking off the bridge so that many more cars did not make it onto the bridge at the moment of collapse. It looks like the captain knew what to do, and the local pilots who came on board would have steered the ship into the right course. But if the steering fails, the steering fails. This is a multi-million ton ship. If the steering system goes and you lose power, the captain is not going to be able to "muscle" the steering to avoid hitting the bridge.

There was talk about contaminated Fuel and this not being the only incident of ships losing power there was something somewhere close to 40 ships that have lost power at different places so is there something with the fuel
These news people aren't helping the situation. I think we are smart enough to know that it will be a long process to learn what happened on board the ship that brought about this disaster. We have the video, we can see what happened, we know the design of the bridge was (cantilever?) partly the problem, the emergency setup part of the problem, the police knew in time to shut down at least one side but too many levels to go thru to notify the guys on the bridge... too bad that once the ship declared a mayday, the bridge couldn't have went into auto shut down and evacuation mode.
Yet, these news people act as though they are giving us vital unknown info. We've been thru enough disasters to know that the process isn't tv quick, that water temp, current, obstructions in the water, EVERYTHING involved prolongs the investigation. One news source ask a crab fisherman how long he thought it would take to replace the bridge? You would think the news people were made up from members of the View, I mean they are operating on about the same level of low IQ intelligence.
I BET 💰 AND GREED PLAYED A BIG PART OVER SAFETY. THIS SHIP HAD PRIOR OPERATION CITATIONS BUT STILL ALLOWED TO GO BACK AND FORTH. THE BRIDGE HAD NO BUMPERS FOR ANY BLUNT IMPACT.
No bumpers could have stopped a ship that size and mass, and money and greed play a part in most things
The ship hit the fan...
What is known to the people on board of the ship? They are very tight lip about it.
Very badly designed bridge! Very fragile!
When this bridge was designed and built, ships were a lot smaller than this one. They designed for the 1970s expected conditions, not the 21st century reality.
There’s not a bridge in the world that could survive an impact from a ship that size
Apparently news anchors wear undershirts for broadcasts now
I don’t know but when I see the smoke from diesel spewing out of the exhaust the ship seems like it was sent full throttle. Please explain what the F that was about please.
Could have been full reverse
it was not going full throttle they were in the process of trying to start the engines.
There is a maritime youtuber that fully explains what you are seeing.
That was not a throttle up it was a full restart of the engine as it had shut down and had caused them to lose full power.
When you restart a huge diesel engine the procedure is to lock open the valves and then spin up the engine with a pony motor, then you dump fuel and close the valve lock so that the engine gets compression and ignites the fuel causing it to belch a huge cloud of sooty un-burned fuel.
The smallest diesel engines that use this method are commonly used in bulldozers.
In reverse. Common sense
Full throttle IN REVERSE.
First of all if it's a toll road why are the taxpayers of America flipping the bill what is a privately funded roadway and on top of that why isn't the company that hit it paying for it. And also why are the taxpayers going to take care of your families that their company and again the ship that hit the bridge causing the collapse needs to pay for the support of the victims that were lost because of their actions not the taxpayers this is ridiculous
Bridges that fragile . There’s a big problem come . Someone is at neglect.
