I think Nina Hagen has a very impressive voice, this song gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. No one forced you to hear it so just go listening to Schuberts version and be happy. But to call Nina's version a "massacre" is illiberally. :)
i've known her music through the years but never heard this. reinforces her case as one of the most capable vocalists ever in the world. she's always pushing, but i never thought that i would hear one of the most comforting performances ever from Nina. she's usually trying to take you out of your comfort. well if you broke both your legs, and next thing Nina came along and sang to you what just happened, it would sound like the best thing that ever happened to you in your life! Genius!
Thank you for posting this... the video is nice... it reminds me of my family's homes on the Neckartal. Santa Maria is the next town over from where I live in California. I've always loved Nina's work, even though I don't always like the particular song. I can appreciate the depth and beauty and strength of her voice. And I find myself listening to her from time to time. But she is also so very interesting to watch.

This is the best non-English version I have ever heard in my own opinion...and would go so far as to say my all time favorite version of the song! Granted I'm a great Nina fan...it is quite beautiful in voice and instrumentation. wonderful...

@crazycat690 Aspect aside, the biggest difference between lady gaga and Nina Hagen is that Nina can sing. And she sings without electronic props. A voice like hers is born maybe once in a hundred years.

Nina is awesome. She may not be for everyone but she is not without talent. She was considered an opera prodigy before she was 10 years old so she can sing beautifully if she wants. But what fun is that when you can do it punk.

oh well thank you for such a quick response, um personally I love every little thing nina's done, (except for that cosma shiva song ) anyway the video wasn't made by nina I had an assignment at school about our city's cathedral (long story) I think this song has a lot of strenght and power whether you believe in saints and stuff or not, to me this song is about having this lost soul kind of thing singing her heart out, expressing her soul in some way, like she's a woman looking for an answer
