We used to travel from Ghazipur to Varanasi earlier while coming to Lucknow as there had to be made a break of Gauge journey earlier at BSB, if I remember right. The track used to be meter gauge, ran parallel to the BG Mughalsarai route until the Varuna river and then went towards Varanasi City Station, and was hauled by these MG Steam Locos. Since my father was in the Railways (now retired), we used to get family passes to travel in the First Class compartments on those MG Trains. While I was quite small when the gauge conversion took place to BG, but even after that, BG Steam Locos were used until late 90s. My father would tell about the smoke from Steam Locos turning everyone black in the compartments 😂😂
That's really nostalgic... You are right... My father was also in Railways... Varanasi Gorakhpur route was meter gauge and it was not direct... We have to change train at Bhatani Junction for further journey... I captured a video 12 years ago where you can see this route as single broad gauge and unelectrified. The video is on my channel. I used to travel from Trichur in Kerala to Varanasi in the years 1957 - 1962 in unreserved 3rd class, journey was 3 nights 4 days. I 2as a student the BHU university young and used to struggles to survive so those train journies twice in a year aways in the hot Summer months were tough often fly ash would hit the eye and get stuck causing pain irritation. Those huge Canadian steam engines were impressive in size and strength. Travelling through Kadappa in Andhra and through the hot hit Madhyapradesh and Uttar Pradesh with no proper food and clean drinking water were tough.
That's really informative... Came to know about the struggles of the passengers then... Now the situation is better than before and it's improving... I hope for more improvement in railways in the coming days...

Nothing can return but memories remain, even worst what little remain [ Railway colonies, installations etc] as historical remnants of the bygone era are destroyed for so called development. Ajay ji Salute you for capturing those beautiful moments which otherwise would have got burried in the annals of history and never seeing the light of the day.
Proud being son of a Mechanical Engineer who served from Indian Railways1942 to 1983 when Steam ruled but was sad when decisions were made to completely to do away with steam traction.

The WDM4 was fitted with the first turbocharged emd engine the 16-567D3 with a horsepower of 2400-2600.
Speed is 835 rpm and idle speed is 275rpm sounds very similar to current emds

Manduadih se just pahle jaha aaj coaching depot hai waha pahle meter gauge ka Loco Shed tha... Broad gauge ka Loco Shed gambhiri baba ke bagal me tha, jaha ab railway colony ban gai hai... Jaha abhi new Platform No. 10 aur 11 khatm hota hai, lagbhag wahi.

My father started his job in railway as a steam locomotive driver.
He was the steam loco driver (Present days loco pilot) of train no. 04267 Pratapgarh-Varanasi Passenger Train which was hauled by steam locomotive till 1994.
After the diesel locomotives was introduced to this train and in present days it's Electric.
And now my father is a CLI, still working on Varanasi pratapgarh section with this train.
Those days were Golden days, steam era, childhood days.
Oh that's great... Were you living in the railway colony of Varanasi? My father was also in the railways, signal and telecom department. In Varanasi we lived in AEN colony.

हमें भी बचपन में वर्ष 1970-71 की बातें याद है, उन दिनों मैं ऊंचाहार के मात्र इंटर कालेज में कक्षा 10-11 का छात्र था, मेरे पिता वही पर रेलवे में पी . डब्लू आई थे, उन दिनों मेरे ही गृह जनपद प्रताप गढ़ के दो भाई श्री राम लाल, व छोटे लाल, भाप इंजन के क्रमशः पसेंजर और माल गाड़ी के ड्राइवर थे,
छोटे लाल जी हमें अपना भाप इंजन वही संटिंग करने को देते थे, कभी कभी एक माल गाड़ी ग्रीन एरो नाम से हफ्ते में एक दो बार चलती थी तो उसे ऊंचाहार से राय बरेली तक खुद पीछे की सीट पर बैठे हम से ही पूरे 35 किमी, चलाने को देते थे, वो माल गाड़ी बीच के स्टेशन पर नही रुकती थी, ऊंचाहार में पानी इंजन में पानी भरने को रुकती थी।
वो यादें ताजा होती है, और विडियो देखता ही रहता हूं स्टीम इंजन वाले

Great archival footage from the steam traction era at Varanasi Jn. Any idea which year(s)/period these are from? IR phased out steam locomotives in the mid-90s, looking at the video quality these likely are from the 70s to 80s.
