Could someone please explain to me the meaning of the last line of the last poem in The House on the Marshlands, "The Apple Trees"--what is the meaning/significance of "women rooted to the river."? That seemed to me to have come out of nowhere.
The comments with the " ummm", etc., are related to the difficulty of relating to the language of poetry that one wants to perceive or put into words of understanding. To understand a language by means of speech is almost impossible. Poetry is very close to the world of the Magus, that is why any critic or commentator of any piece of art or language will find that difficulty to express to the public spirit ( and unquestionably to himself) the meaning . She simply paused for a moment and continued speaking when the word came to her, whereas her interviewer seemed to be in a state of shock/reverence of Ms. Glück for the entire interview, which was exhausting to listen to and watch. Additionally, I don't understand what you mean by 'understanding language by speech is almost impossible.'

The anti-intellectualism implicit in your response is typical of the mindlessness of the age. Btw, anyone familiar with the history of literature would know exactly what I mean re a culture in which everything and anything is described as 'great'. Are there no adults on YT? The idea that a prize, any prize, confers 'greatness' on someone is nothing more than a sad reflection of our market-driven world.

Delighted LG won the Nobel. That said, this effete style of discussing poetry drives me crazy. It really shows how the cancer of creative writing has turned poets into technicians (who invariably spend far too much time in universities-the worst possible place for them-surrounded by corporate mercenaries-very bad for the soul lol). Seems like a juxtaposition. River means changing but then also the word rooted is there. Rooted . Like change is the way to stay same kind of paradox.
