In 2023, an estimated 6.3 million children under five died, 2.9 million of them in the WHO African Region. This is equivalent to five children under 5 years of age dying every minute. Two thirds of these deaths can be attributed to preventable causes. A third of all these deaths are in the neonatal period. 0:24

First, the irony of the WaPo navel gazing on this issue is inadvertently hilarious given the role of the Post as a mouthpiece of the US government as a reliable propaganda organ to sell wars by any means. Why doe the US increasingly rely on sanctions? It is bloodless war, at least in terms of American military casualties. The problem - a threshold already crossed - is that countries sanctioned are forced to turn their backs on the US and increasingly, bystanders do as well. The US unipolar moment has passed, but the power hangover remains. I would add that another symptom of this disease it the increasing tendency to enforce extraterritorial legal and police actions where it has no jurisdiction. Comical if you have a taste for farce.

Because we always have to blame someone else for our problems. It's pervasive in our society.
