in the past 4 years of my learning mixing, may be this is the best video i have watched on youtube. Thankyou Joel for the knowledge. Thankyou almighty.
I've been searching for videos to help me with vocals equalizing, and videos for acoustic guitar equalizing. This video hit two birds with one stone. And I'm a Christian as well :) Thank you very much!
I think it would be great if you could create more tutorials. I myself have used mixers all the time, but had never understood the equalizing fully. Thanks to you, it's so much clear now!
Thank you! I just started learning the sound board at my church and I've watched a bunch of videos on it. Yours is by far the easiest to understand for beginners and you hit all the basics without pushing a specific style.
You are doing a fine job for those who are novice or new to world of sound. I was looking for some info. regarding basic EQ. and your video was very helpful. God Bless.
I have the same ministry at my local church and tonight while editing a record of the worship session of last sunday I got a little bit angry about the poor sound on the vocals I am getting out of the mixer. So I popped out YT to find a good video that could help me. Sadly I do not have a parametric or sweep knob on my mixer neither good microphones however I think the idea is quite well stated and very useful. God bless you. I think it was no coincidence that I found your video.
You are a great teacher... I can really appreciate how you are able to highlight the understanding of the information delivered... It's quite beautiful actually
Hi Joel. Thank you so much for creating this video. 4 years down the road and this video still serves useful to eager learners like me. I have just taken over sound in my church and needed some insights of how all these worked. You made it look simple and I'm gonna try it out. Thank you and god bless ya.
really helpful!!!! very imformative and clearly explained.. just joined the sound team for worship team at church and this was the exact sport of information i was looking for! Thank you very much and God bless YOU!!!
Joel, thank you so much for your video and your ministry. I am also a sound tech for my church and have struggled to understand the concept of EQ, but your video gives me a better understanding. God bless.
Joel, I'm french and bilingual. But to much english peoples don't pronounce and articulate enough. Like they have a potato in the mouth. You are awesome, we hear every word and you explain as a pro, quietly and surely. It's probably the best tutorial ever!!! Salut de Montréal, Bravo mon ami.
Ive been learning about EQ and mastering for my home music production for a while now and this really helped explain a lot by SHOWING it. thanks alot its helped me understand about how you must listen to the music and make it fit
Excellant job Joel. When I started running the sound at my church in 1979 I had to learn everything from what few books I could find and by grabbing the soundman from every music group that I could get access to. Of course there was no internet back then. It probably took me two or three years to learn what you have demonstrated here in nine minutes, ha. Keep up this good work this should be helpful to a lot of people.I am retired from running the sound at church (mostly) and I just play on YT.
praise the lord brother ,i am so happy for watching this video ,now i am using mixer our church ,according your viedo ,and i want another viedo also i hope you will upload another video also ,your teaching style is so good i understand ur teaching style ,god bless you
I found this video and must have clicked mouse bc i wound up about a halfway through the video when you started making adjustments - with a fresh song i figured lets just listen and do what he does (estimating the type of recording I am trying to achieve) - and hells bells g golly jesus if it didn't help build a foundation toward an overall better recording of a song i have recorded multiple ways - sometimes it pays to watch a video and do it from the foundation of your recording - This video is just one of those little setup things i tweak prior to an acoustic guitar vocal recording that is as fundimental as vocal thickening tricks or anything else really - its part of the process now, and it saves me a lot of time throughout the journey.
this video really helped me to have a better understanding of how frequencies work ;; great job thank you;; also found your style of teaching very easy to comprehend
I had a Behringer 1202FX mixer, but sold it. I have studio one and Logic Pro 9 and many other software programs, but seem to like studio one the most. Thank you for making this video !!
great video! can't wait to see more. could you do a video on studio recording an acoustic guitar with one microphone. i'd love to know how to make it sound good.
Thank you for posting this video. I watched it yesterday afternoon and went straight to church and reset the EQ on our lapel mic based on the info you provided. All I can say is "WOW"!! Normally, it's kind of tinny and annoying sounding, but after using the sweepable mid as you described, the same mic was full and rich with plenty of gain before feedback. I would love to see more videos like this from you...professional and informative. THANKS!!
Great tip bro! I've been looking for a well explained video like this, I'm definetly use this to EQ in my church...I'm a guitar player and this is going to help me really good!...God Bless You for doing this! God deserves the best.
Thanks! Great simple explicationsteps that took a complex subject and made it relatable and clear to understand the principles. I have a better understanding after viewing. You should create more videos. Great presentation and easy to follow.
Good tutorial mate, I just started working on sound and lighting for local shows. your video is the first i've seen that gives a good idea on what to listen out for when EQ'ing Good Job
Great job on eq'ing! I've been in the music scene for a long time and you have a good ear and know what you're doing. I'd be happy playing with you behind the console. Thanks alot!
Hi, you and I have the same name! Cheers to you from Singapore. I was doing audio works in my campus for 2 years. Learnt quite a lot about mixing and other sound theories. I know exactly what does each knob do on the board. However, I just find it hard to explain it to others on how they work. Your video tutorial was indeed well done! I've finally found a way to explain the mids part in words after your video.
Great job on the video lesson for EQ. I run a Allen & Heath GL3300 (40 channel mixer). It has been a hard road to learn how to mix my praise team. I till struggle with the EQ (along with the rest board). I do ok, but I am allways looking for ways to improve. There is really not a whole lot of good study materials that explains this. I really enjoyed your video. It was very educational and definately can apply it at church. I would love to see some more Soundboard fundamental videos! Thank you!
dude you are a magician!! please help us to understand how the mid highs and low knobs differ from each other and how should their settings be varying please post a new video of this if you could GREAT JOB!!
well i just starting watching your video and got interested in the fact that you started in your career at such a young age. I'm 14 years old and started the same way you at a church and i still am. Just as you said, its a lot easier knowing what you're doing if you know what all the buttons do!
Hey Brother, you need to do a whole series. This is the best stuff on live mix I have been able to find. I would pay for a series like this covering more aspects of live mixing in a church. Give it some thought. There are a lot of churches out their with sound folks that would love to learn more. Be Blessed
I enjoyed your video sir, I'm not doing sound for a church but just doing sound for a friend because no one else wants to :P It was a good intro and helped me get some of the basics down, I like how you took the time to isolate the sounds and explain them, the board I use onl has sweeps for the mid range though, which is ok, but now I'm glad I know what they do.
Great vid got into sound the same way started doing sound as a short time ago as a teen in the church and they showed me the ropes a but really didn't go into the full aspect and i didn't how to work the whole system just how to setup i still dont know how to use the knobs all that much and have been looking into it for a while on how to use all the knobs on my allen and heath mixer and this video helps out alot and hopefully i can use this to get our mixer till where it needs to be
Thank you very much for the awesome video I always wanted to know the details of live mixing. By the way, I think you are a great instructor so, It would be a great if you posted more videos. Thanks again for sharing.
wow man iam amazed at how well this vid came about thank you so much this will help out soo much not only with church music settings for my team but am going to start recording and this will def help out tons so thanks once again =]
thanks you so much that was reallly helpful, i am a little bit jumbled up and confused in a few things but i'll sit down and re read your guidance again and again and do a bit research, to understand the concepts better.. thanks one again.. :) can you post a video about basics of eq and what they should be in standard conditions for complete goons like me?
This can be done with EQ. If you have an sweepable EQ you can slowly sweep between the highs and lows until you hear the ring. Once you determine the frequency of the ring you can attenuate (cut) the EQ at that specific frequency with a notch filter. It depends on what type of EQ you have though. It can also be done with a graphic EQ one band at a time. This is called "ringing out" the monitors and should be done while the hall is empty.
There are some criticisms of the guitar sound being thin, and it is. But, I would have to hear it in the mix with the drums and bass and whatever else is playing to know for sure if it's good for the overall mix. Good tutorial on how the EQ works over all. Most church sound people don't have the slightest idea of how the sweeps work or how you can use them to find offensive frequencies or boost the ones you want. I think I would apply a high pass filter to the vocal to help with the overall mix. If it's just the singer and the guitar, then the guitar is a little thin.
thanks a lot....this video was very helpful to me..... I have a request to u that u must give some more lesson and tips on mixing the other instruments like drums, bass, keys, etc...and how to mix the overall sound of a band in live or in church setup......
Another great way to use a sweep EQ when you don't know which frequencies you should dip is: Turn up the gain for, say, the high mids. Then sweep through the complete spectrum and find a spot where you hate the sound that comes out of the speakers. Then dip the gain below 0 and you should have cleaned up your signal quite nicely. After a while you will eventually learn which frequencies have which effect on a signal.
Use a sweep filter. Or a bandpass filter. It will only allow a certain band of frequency to be heard, and as you sweep through the highs and lows, you can hear different parts of your mix.
Thanks for this tutorial. Though I don't mix through a board for live sound, I plan on using these techniques to get a better sound through my DAW. Much appreciated!
There are a very few who teach others for FREE what they have learned hard. Thank you for your efforts.
in the past 4 years of my learning mixing, may be this is the best video i have watched on youtube. Thankyou Joel for the knowledge. Thankyou almighty.
I've tried watching a lot of tutorials. This is one of the best lessons I've seen. Very clear, understandable, and easy to follow! Thanks so much Joel
Fantastic video. I am the worship leader at my church and I see a lot of room for improvement with our media team. This helps a lot! Hope to see more.
U have an incredible gift of teaching. I especially like ur attention to detail and down to earth personality

I have the same ministry at my local church and tonight while editing a record of the worship session of last sunday I got a little bit angry about the poor sound on the vocals I am getting out of the mixer. So I popped out YT to find a good video that could help me.

Information is information and I appreciate you sharing this. Much to glean from many sources.
Cool! I was a bit puzzled about EQ. This really helped, and we have the same desk!

Maybe your mix didn't quite match my preferred sound, but you've taught me how to produce it. Awesome vid, man!
