  • ( www.alltfl.com/ ) Check out our new spot to find ALL our content, from news to videos and our podcasts! The 2023, G87 BMW M2 carries on the tradition of a manual transmission in M division's smallest and "purest" car (at least by most enthusiasts' standards). But just how much do you lose in 0-60 acceleration by going for it rather than the automatic? Andre tests out both versions in the Arizona desert.

I feel like people at this point are just taking for granted the G87 is ugly, too boxy, because they've heard it so much.
I think it looks awesome. Reminds me of the 2002 Homage. Although i will say it looks much better in certain colors than others.
Still, this gen M2 would blow the doors of 99% of cars you're likely to see on public roads, and more than a few on the track. No doubt the weight (4000 lbs!!?on a 2 series??!)is a little bit of a turn-off, but at the end of the day I think this is the best all around sports car under 100k out of Europe right now.

Did I just hear 3900lbs described as relatively lightweight? For a 2 door car that is very heavy, regardless of what it's competition weighs that is about 1000lbs over relatively lightweight and 1500lbs heavier than what I would call a lightweight car. I would describe it as a heavyweight car that is down nearly 100hp from a similarly sized American pony car.

I just traded in my F87 M2. This is what I see when I look at the new M2:
Pros: Still has a manual. Still drives great. Has much more power. Better interior. Looks good in Zandvoort Blue and Black. You can own the last manual transmission BMW.
Cons: Looks like trash in the other colors. Moves to M4 platform, so it is now overweight, and cancels out the extra power. Stock exhaust is not great (I owned a BMW Performance Package that upgraded the exhaust.) The back seat is now smaller, even though the car got bigger.
The Supra Manual is its main competition, and the Supra is much sexier, and less expensive. Supra is over 600 lbs lighter, so the less power evens out. And the Supra has more cache on the street.
Not an easy decision. I'll get one of them for Christmas. Merry Christmas to my punk ass!🎄

The B58 is awesome (I have an F22 M240) ... but its not the S58. The Supra's chassis also a step down. Its not an M Chassis. Personally, I am not a fan of the looks of the Supra for me to own. It draws too much attention for what I want. But I love seeing other people drive them, if that makes sense. I prefer the M2's look as a vehicle I would want to own as it is a tad more subtle. If you want to throw the car around and have an attention grabbing look, yeah, the Supra would probably be better. If you want to hug corners and go fast on fun curvy roads or tracks with a car that most people wouldn't even recognize as being special based on looks, then the M2 is the clear answer.

I don't think bmw uses composite for the hood and fenders. Most likely they are aluminum. If you think about it, it would probably cost more to build them in composite.
The downside to composite I believe is they are heavier then alluminum and the body gaps seem to be less uniform but that could be just a build quality issue

Hence why my BMW M340 was replaced by a Tesla. If these traditional OEMs want to survive in the long run start building cars that people want and stop playing games.

Even the Z isn’t a new car, it’s the same Z as before but now with multiple “Stop Sales”. The Supra is nowhere to be found, I’m guessing because BMW wants to make their own cars and really the only other car company who’s updated their “sports car”, is ford. In the olden days European cars had cheaper and way more efficient manual boxes. Muricans had huge super heavy inefficient gas guzzling automatics. Now the automatics are lighter more efficient and faster.

The autos are not lighter manuals are still 50-100lb lighter which is alot, the autos are more efficient and faster now but they ruin alot of the fun, so it aint worth it.

In an automatic the car controls you, in a manual you control the car. If you are and old man with knee pain then go for the automatic. In real life you don't need to worry about a two tenths of a second difference from 0-60. If you have to be stuck in traffic then go for the auto but its way more complex mechanically and it requires maintenance. As an european Ive always driven manuals and when I tested automatic cars it felt weird, it felt like a videogame.

@@PaulTC777 even in traffic manual is fine if u know how to drive in traffic, just keep a big gap and u never have to come to a complete stop or ever touch ur brakes or use the clutch to start from a stop

@@Sideways_Singh Precisely. And an added bonus of playing this "game" of using your brakes as little as possible is that it teaches you to really anticipate the flow of traffic and the manoeuvres and mistakes of other drivers. I've been doing that for years and my friends are often surprised how far in advance I see certain situations coming and react to them before they occur. I've become so good at this game that I hardly brake at all anymore, unless coming to a standstill and even then only all the way at the end to hold the car in place. It really improves your driving skills, way beyond simply braking less and it also improves your gas mileage dramatically
Too bad most performance cars aren't available in manual anymore. I recently bought an M340i and for the first time in my life I'm driving an automatic. Even the "lower" models, like the 320i, aren't available in manual anymore. Great car the M340i, but I miss shifting so, so much. For my next car I think I'm going to either switch brands, or try to go for an M-model with a manual available like an M2 or M3, if finances allow it and it still exists in a few years
