I mostly kept a moderately straight face the entire video while enjoying it. The moment I saw the dude rolling with the ‘toads’ I was laughing hysterically.
That would be correct. I took a look and noticed mario is looking at his pocket and his hand is on his left pocket. I tested this animation over the "key get" animation and it fits like a glove(pun intended). It doesn't really fit with anything else. Maybe at one point mario was supposed to take something other than a star from levels. Maybe a collectable like a gem that unlocks a level at the end of the game, but was scrapped. The only other explanation is that this Was the early luigi "key get" animation, but I highly doubt that it would be.
I assumed it might've been getting a key from Bowser, but not using it on a key door until after collecting 1 or more stars and then Mario is looking for the key in his pocket because it's been a while since he put it there. I don't think it's actually used in the game though.
