For every dirty faced grainer porch I've sat on waiting out the cold night to get to the next yard, the next lonely spur line. For every Freddy I've watched flashing in the night from the bushes wondering if there was a ride on that steel beast. For every train I've hopped these last ten lonely years of wonderful wondering you two bring it all back to me. Never stop making music and I'll see you down the line.
@Joe Janedoe shut up Joe.. i have hitched and hopped across many states.. but i must say riding the rails was the most peaceful and stressful, I remember getting dropped off out in the middle of know where and waiting 3 days in the hot car till thankfully the car got picked up again.. same with hitching, some trucker dropped me off at a closed dinner and i had to walk damn near 40 miles over a few day to get back to the main highway..
But that life will sure make you grow old faster. I haven't hopped in a few years, gonna keep travelling though, Im just gonna do it by vehicle. That pack weighs on your bones the older you get, I did eight years military with a pack and several years hopping with a pack. I got sick of wearing a damn pack lol
Okay this is so Crazy!! These Two along with one other guy came to my liquor store back in 2013 or 2012 and bought a Fifth of Dickel Whiskey. They were driving an old, small Hatchback Car. This liquor store was in the middle of nowhere in the Hills of Arkansas. What a small world!
it's almost like you found an ancient runestone with the lost art of music on it and your songs are the result of touching it. You are a modern day Hank Williams.
Beautiful , but hard to listen to sometimes. Here in the heart of West Virginia we have been hit very hard by the opioid epidemic. I've lost so many good friends, a brother, and nearly lost myself somewhere along the way. Many would say they were junkies, trash, deserving of their fate. It is hard for most average Americans to imagine the lack of opportunity, crushing poverty, and despair we live with here every day. These days I don't have much to smile about, not many reasons to be happy... but your music touches my soul in a way that I simply cannot explain, so if either of you ever happen to read this I just wanted to say thank you. Please never stop making this beautiful music, and Ben please don't go down that same road to ruin where so many I have dearly loved tread the final steps to their deaths. This music is special, and you two make more of a difference in this cold dreary world than you could ever know.
Same here. Born in Tyler county and living in Marion (Fairmont). People don't understand what it's like here. The sting of the friends I've lost along the way is something the average American couldn't even fathom. Benny Tod encapsulates it with every note he plays. He's definitely my favorite songwriter.
Absolutely love how sometimes, and it may be meaningful I'm not sure, incorporates almost the sound of train whistles into his singing when he holds notes. In the chorus of this song he does it just about every time almost mocking the sounds of different train whistles before he says I'll see you on down the line. I have always been strangely moved by the sounds of old steam trains. One of the trains they use at Dollywood especially with its long and somber bellows on cold nights. It's almost an iconic sound of the mountains and travelers. So sad yet so enchanting.
So glad that you guys are still recording. Ive been listening for about a year now, and just started covering your songs too. There is something magical about this band. Not a lot of music moves me emotionally anymore, but this, this shit curls up in my soul. Sending love from Iowa~
Just found these two like 2 months ago, I'm totally in love with their music.. there's not a single mediocre song whatsoever, cause it's all really from the heart, you can tell. I'm happy I found them!

This song hits me in such a special spot. So many friends have passed to drugs and stupid shit, but I also know a lot of vagabonds that I'll never meet again and I hope they are well, I know odea is still alive as well as I know. But the personal bonds we create with people that last for possibly years only to end without contact are something that keeps me awake at night. Human life is such a fleeting and valuable thing. Chill guys, honestly I learned what a burl was because of this thread. I seen them all the time on trees, just never knew what they were! And trust me he wasn't kidding @Goat, the grain patterns are beautiful. But it's a burl that looks deformed on the side of the tree, I really think both words work though. Burled, burrowed same meaning in the context Ben was using it. Anyways like Goat said lets have a good one.
I'm fine if he wants to disgaree. I am not the one cussing and taking offense to the disagreement of one word. Burl: a rounded knotty outgrowth on a tree, giving an attractive figure when polished and used especially for handcrafted objects and veneers. -or a small knot in wood or cloth. -Wartlike. Burrow: A hole hole or tunnel especially as a dwelling. A chest caving in would not feel like an outgrowth. It is caving into his chest and the sadness burrows "deep in your lung". Caving in and an outgrowth are total oppostites and do no coincide in anyway. Yet I do agree that burl would work in this context. But quite strange to hear him say that he knows burl is not the definite lyric yet says I need to expand my vocab as of it is correct. A quick quote: "First of all burrows are in the ground". C'mon, take your own advice bud. There is no requirement that a hole has to be in the ground for it to be a burrow. You can burrow into many things, does not have to be soil or ground. You can burrow into your bed or blanket, etc.
God these two are American folk treasures in every sense of the word. I really hope these two find tremendous success. Iv seen them stand up for their art and their values, they won't be sold, or bought.

I know this song is old, but this song hits unbelievably hard, I lost my one of my good friends to suicide, the last time we talked was in the winter and everytime I listen to this song I just can’t stop crying. Thank you for such a masterpiece
Just found out one of my best friends died. We were always showing eachother folk music we found and he loved you guys ever since I showed him September Doves. This song hits me harder than usual today. So many friends have died, but I'll never forget them. Maybe I'll join them sooner than later.

Appalachian folk was heavily influenced by scotch irish

Stay true to your music - regardless of what happens do NOT change anything or for anybody. Original sound like yall's is hard to find. I’m so glad you have it on video for us in Floriday to see.
