If you're on the property, they can enforce their "policy."
There are restrictions on the 1st amendment. You can't record anywhere you want just because it's a gov building or publicly accessible.
Ever notice fr-auditors never talk about "traditional public forums, limited public forums, or nonpublic forums?" Or that they never mention "time, place & manner" restrictions? (& if they do, they're usually wrong about it)

The real problem is not that he's laughing, the problem is he really believes that that sign is right, so when the police don't know what the rights are, and normal everyday people also have no idea of what rights are or the laws pertaining to signs are, then that's a problem. It seems to me that most people have no idea what their rights are, most people have no idea of what laws apply to what, they will believe in any signs that are put up in public buildings/places because they don't know any better, and that is what the government banks on, and then one person comes along that know all those things, and even then the people lose because any lawsuits come out of the public purse and not from the individual who is violating those rights, that's why they laugh and don't care, because at the end of the day it's not affecting them personally.

My husband has been a criminal attorney for 20 years and trains the police academy every year. As a citizen I'm getting really fed up with how these police departments breaking the Constitution. Until there is accountability ,there will be no support from me for Police . They should be ashamed of themselves.

I worked in a Correctional department for almost 30 yrs. That sign is to warn visitors before coming into the building that video and photos are prohibited 🚫 so they can leave any photo equipment in their vehicles. That corrections officer just wanted to be hostile.

I really appreciate what you're doing. I film trains and sometimes have issues. There is a sign exactly like the one in your video in front of Proctor & Gamble company in Cincinnati. They make soap and stuff like that. Twice I have filmed trains at the railroad crossing in front of their plant and both times security guards harassed me and told me I couldn't film anything on their side of the sidewalk. Both times I had my back to their company and they approached me. I wish ppl would learn about the First Amendment. Btw, you can see the signs next to the sidewalk when you look at Google Maps street view.

Incompetency is only tolerated in public servants. It is totally true. Ignorance of basic rights by LAW enforcement is not only unacceptable but truly dangerous.
That officer could have been aggressive and mean but instead he smiled and laughed. He was wrong but at least he made the situation lighter. The Correctional officer was unprofessional and rude. I'm glad Sean knows what he is talking about!

Jose, I work for a local newspaper and we have a restriction at our courthouse. I can give you one thing that you might be able to use to fight it. Look at your courthouse directory and see if there are any other elected officials in that courthouse. Like a district attorney, a clerk of court, a solicitor, tax commissioner, anything like that. As long as they are an elected official, restricting your filming in that courthouse lobby is a restriction on your interaction with other elected officials and would very possibly be found unconstitutional. I'm not an attorney so don't take this as a solid legal advice. Just know that it's the reasoning that I used.
