Tremolo....crispy deep fried snare rolls...etereal lyrics of soldiers staring at heaven as warriors pine to left behinds...and a lyrical guitar lead that actually expresses something. My god, there's a reason this is one of the all time OZzy trks. Between this and the Missing Links' "driving..", you've got a textbook display of masterful freakbeat brother. And hey, it's really nice to see the vintage pics - paints a great picture a world away from Canada
Sense of nostalgia is strong on this song. Got a touch of walk away Renee. This song was used in the doco “Save our Sons”. Who knows where the time goes eh?
Thanks for the pictures, gotta love Jim's hair. This was recorded as a demo and submitted to Astor who released it before signing the group. Jim heard the A side on his car radio.
R.I.P The Bass Player Glen Wheatley has passed away Feb 2022- Great Band Great Music.. They where like the Stone Beatles faces Animals of Australia Cheers From Canada.
saw jim keys live in Adelaide, last sat nite!!! He and the band performed this classic along with undecide, buried and dead, ETC.and tracks of hie new album DIRTY DIRTY...The whole gig was EXCELLENT,long live THE MASTERS!!!
Stefan Janoski used this in the Mosaic video circa 2003, so I was … 14 I think. Was still in my ‘77 phase at the time but got into all flavors of psych later on in high school. Listening to this takes me way back.
"A man called Michael Bower has a songwriting credit on ‘Last Post On The Bugle’, because it really does borrow very heavily from his band The Masters Apprentices’ song ‘War Or Hands Of Time’. “A simple act of theft,” said Pete about it. The Libs version slays it though, obviously, because thrills don’t come any sloppier than Doherty rambling away about how he “heard them say, “Oh that boy’s no different today, except in every single way”. He’s barely in control of his own thoughts, and it’s exciting." (Tom Howard on NME)
Great to hear Bill. When I have seen Jim over the years, he never did the early singles which are my favourites. He tended to focus on the later heavier Masters stuff (except for Living in a Child's Dream which he did with Russell Morris and Darryl Cotton -RIP). Will keep an eye out for him in Qld where I live.
@@wayneelliott7011 Unsure about that...I haven't heard all the songs ever recorded in OZ so cannot make that kind of sweeping call. It is a great track but I have heard many great OZ tracks...
@@tonywethereld7429 I have and can unequivocally say that Undecided is the Greatest Song Ever Recorded by an Australian Band / Artist. And with War Or Hands Of Time on the flip, what a Single! The Masters also recorded Australia's Greatest Ever Album in Choice Cuts five years later with a different line-up apart from Vocalist Jim Keays.
@@wayneelliott7011 So Wayne, just to be clear...you are saying that you have heard EVERY Australian recorded track by every Australian artist? that's a BIG statement...
IMO "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and it was far far superior to their puerile A-side "Of La Di Ob La Da", plus many other hits from that era from the Beatles, CCR etc compete in that same space of best B-sides.
I think we have fought alongside the US in all of America's wars, but one - Grenada, since WW1. In WW1 the US first fought at the battle of Le Hamel on July 04 1918 under Australian command of General John Monash. His tactics were used for the first time and later copied by the Germans in WW2 they called it "blitzkrieg", the battle, as predicted by Monash was over in 90 minutes with minimal allied casualties.
seen them live in the late 60s at Lithgow Town Hall. Unfortunately back then the local bikies had to throw eggs at them on stage, and the Masters walked off.
Amy Vonk Pete Doherty was trying to write something similar and ended up ripping it off he even said so in an interview and if you'd bothered to check he even gave credit to Michael Bower on the album

Still listening in Newcastle, NSW during lockdown, Sept 2021. What a great band.
Yes One of the best Aussie band's of the 60s and early 70s
Listening in Newcastle, NSW Aug 2023.
The Masters were pioneers of rock in this country. Grew up with their music in the 60’s ❤ Their music was way ahead of its time.
Stefan Janoski brought me here.
Last Post on the Bugle brought me here.
And also on Astor unbreakable vinyl! Love it. Thanks.

First two singles on astor are amazing. I just love the bands enthusiasm.
Will love this song forever 🥰
I came to this via Civic. Both versions are fantastic!

Glenn did not play on this, but was in a later incarnation of the band.
They were an amazing Aussie rock band !!
Awesome harmonies / backing vocals.
So beautiful.
The best Aussie band of their time , maybe for all time.
Of All Time.

Cool photos, excellent 🇦🇺🎸👍☯️☮️
Saw them in the eighties and also the easybeats. Both awesome!!
No, you didn't
Better than many "A" -side efforts in my view...
great song. accidentally discovering how close Libertines' "Last Post on the Bugle" sounds to this, assuming its a tribute..
Time for heros is like clash groovy times, mick jones of clash produced up the bracket
Yes, just caught this song and it immediately rang alarm bells regarding my beloved Libertines

A "tribute" LOL
New interview with Pete where he mentions ripping this song off (10:49 mark) /watch?v=pUXj5yUCmEA
I used to listen to this over and over - masterpiece
I saw the Masters Aprentices a few times in 1969 & 1970.
First song on car radio on my first date..Just love this.❤
Thank you for showing them in the early 'mod' days :)
We played as support act to these guys in 1969, fantastic memories.
That's amazing. What was your band?
Gavin Belson Tamam Shud?
Please tell me more.
Absolute classic!

brilliant.....
Perfecto 🍁🔥💨🔝
Very mod!! Awesome!!!
The 'A' side must have been something special, this is brilliant.
The A Side "Undecided" is the Greatest Song Ever Recorded in Australia.

One of the best songs ever...
Magnificent!
Great song.
spoke to the author of the song about a year ago. wrote the song being that Vietnam was being fought at that time
One of the greatest (anti Vietnam War protest) songs of all time.
Almost a Yardbirds feel about this.
better than
Yep, totally.
I reckon Shapes Of Things must have influenced them but they created a great song of their own.
Well said.
last post on the bugle
(Best B-side ever?)

Probably the Best Single ever released Undecided/War Or Hands Of Time along with Hendrix Hey Joe/Stone Free, Them's, Baby Please Don't Go/Gloria.
Their best B-Side for me was How I Love You, flip side of 5:10 Man, Jim ruined it later in my opinion by adding vocals.
WOW😎✌🏽☮️🎸
@5DeadlyRecords Couldn't agree more!
Dead good DownUnder track from a fab band from OZ, read the article in the last Ugly Things mag...
what a great tune
I don't think that many of us Americans remember that Australia fought alongside us in Vietnam, which is probably what inspired this song...

Us? No dude not US,
Nice
That Les Paul with Bigsby pictured...... now this is '66 is that a '59 or '60 Burst ???
Nagyon szuper.
Wow
Wars was the A side. Undecided was a song they cobbled together in about five minutes because they needed a b side song.

Killer anti war song
Sounds Pro War, really firing off on those guitars I tells ya
Classic.

Listen to the Libertines' Last Post on the Bugle - they were obviously heavily influenced by this song - I'd even say they ripped it off.
yes! i've always thought this too.
Glad there is someone else who thought so too.
I agree!
Amy Vonk Pete Doherty was trying to write something similar and ended up ripping it off he even said so in an interview and if you'd bothered to check he even gave credit to Michael Bower on the album
Did he give him royalties?

This is classic australian psychedelia.
Always loved this track! Shame about the guitarist who wrote it; he became like a Syd Barrett-style casualty.
No not really, he sufferred from anxiety and had to stop playing. It is more common than you think.
