Britain's Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has committed to sending a squadron of 14 Challenger 2 tanks to Ukraine over the coming weeks.
The Challenger 2 is a battle tank designed to attack other tanks, and has been in service with the British Army since 1994. It has been deployed in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo and Iraq, according to the army.
On Wednesday (January 25) Germany cleared the way for Europe to send scores of its Leopard 2 battle tanks to Ukraine, and Washington was poised make a similar announcement - moves hailed by Kyiv as a potential turning point in the war, while condemned by Moscow as escalation.
Kyiv has been calling for months for Western main battle tanks that would give its forces greater firepower, protection and mobility to break through Russian defensive lines and potentially reclaim occupied territory.

ukraine will be the true test of it's capabilities. I get the feeling the ones that do get taken out will be by artillery, not much can survive an attack from above. One to one engagement however and they'd kick any russian tanks butt.

There hasn't been a Challenger 2 built in over 20 years... very hard to get spares.. Many contracts for spares have long expired as have the company's that provide them. Literally have had to beg borrow and steal bits from other Challengers to have a few full operating tanks. Ukraine will struggle to keep these operating in the field.
@Zytose S The operators are what matters the most and the Ukrainians haven't got the experience with these tanks or the quality training us or our allies have. Sending tanks is stupid and is just dragging us closer to a large scale conflict in which no one wins. Biden needs removed from office and someone put in place who isn't a weak snivelling snake.

When I visited Leeds on behalf of my company and invited to witness a demonstration of our engines in the challenger tank as it powered past my viewing position it made the hairs at the back of my neck stand to attention To witness it was a thrill to say the least 👍👍

The Russian tank would never be used at night, as they don’t have proper night vision/ thermal optics for their tanks. At least not the majority.

Thats not an artillery battle. Its a total War and artillery is god of War so there is a lot of for sure. But a modern tank two times bigger than a T90 will make a massive difference in for armored push and counter attack

It's beautiful, I always liked how British armor always looked more agressive and "monsterous" and compared to the rest. It was almost always the case, the very first MK-IV, Churchills, Centurions and now the Challenger- all inspire a sense mechanical brutality purely from an aesthetic POV.

It is if i passed my medical I would have been in the rac in one they are a force you dont want too go against. On RUclips type in challenger2 gets hit with 70 RPGs all it done was knocked the crew about and took the optical system out. the crew survived too give there statement about it. And in another video one got hit by 1 rpg and it all but bounced off.but that’s nothing compared too the new challenger 3 it’s all on RUclips. If you use it right it will dominate the battlefield. We should be very proud too own them. Ukraine will have the edge they need

@@coolscube5062 Challenger isnt being built in germany. Its being built in the UK. Only that the design is created from Rheinmetall. The armstrong factory in the north (formally made challenger 2) will make the new designs for the turret while down south the tanks will be assembled. The cannon will likely come from germany however.

Pretty tame demo of a great tank. It's capable of much more than that. Actually its novelty appearance on Top Gear shows its manoeuvrability and off road chops much better albeit for laughs.
Only problem is, can you change the stability unit with 30 minutes training? They are beautiful tanks, however the technical problems are going to be their downfall, without properly trained backup maintenance crews. But hey, I don't know much about that 😁 Good luck boys!!!

@@discostu2246 quite frankly, it’ll be an excellent technical demonstration of western military hardware vs the capabilities of a major global superpower and NATO enemy, without risking any British lives. If you consider the value of the tank at home against the intelligence value of seeing it deployed and in the field, it’s actually an excellent strategic move.

Ah, a news source that has remembered the UK has also sent tanks.
Great to see CR2 wit the up armour pack/ Bar armour and full ECM on it, although how well will it do without the REME, the associated CRARRV vehicle and Warrior repair vehicle that is needed for pack lifts, plus the ISTAR and attack helicopters that are needed for it to be truly effective providing the full digital battlefield to it.
We used these in Iraq but they have never really had a toe to toe fight with T-72's, T-80's etc. i spent years perfecting becoming an armoured specialist, we spend months on the basic courses, not to mention the amount of range time that qualified crews spend practicing, also the Ukrainian crews are having to move from a 3 person vehicle with auto-loaders to a 4 person crew with manual loading, there is a lot to learn in a very short time and no room for error.
Best of luck but i think we will see some of these brew up, and i don't mean a cup of tea

At this point the vast majority of Russian troops in Ukraine are poorly trained and minimally equipped conscripts from extremely poor, disenfranchised backgrounds. It's not going to be a fair fight and it's not funny or glorious that tens of thousands of young men have died fighting a pointless war started by a mad man. The whole "orc" thing is wearing very thin now, especially when I see us massively privileged westerners using it. I won't feel any pity if some Wagner fascists get ripped to shreds by a Chally, but good god it's going to be tough going for the cannon-fodder conscripts who have no choice in the matter.

If I were a top quality trained crew in the latest version of the Abrams MBT the ONLY tank that would cause me concern would be a Challenger II driven by a UK crew

My perception of the Challenger 2 on the Battlefield of Ukraine goes back 80 years ago when the Tiger 1 turned Soviet Tanks into red-hot Twisted Steel. Modern tanks from USA and England.

@@winstonchurchill8491 It was expensive to produce and expensive to maintain but when it was 100% operational it gave the Allies a headache if 1347 were built they already destroyed so many Allied tanks it is incalculable if they had the American production capacity they would have built 3x as many Tigers you would see the giant problem that the Allies would have mainly the Soviets with the Obsolete T34 with 45mm of armor against the 102mm of armor of the Tiger and the Phanter 80mm.

For those that don’t know but have a look on RUclips type in challenger 2 gets hit with 70 RPGs the story about it is there with white banner too and bottom of video. It’s a beast of a tank that i nearly got too be in if it wasn’t for me failing my medical. And same time type in challenger 3 that is our new one some are still in production. 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
People need to know they were old obsolete rpgs and any modern atgm would take out the challenger as long as they went anywhere but the turret cheeks.

One Germany tiger 1 survived around 6 hours of anti-tank bombardment, it lived, but the crew didn’t. This weighs 65 tones, if this tank were to get disabled by maybe engine problem or track destroyed, how to do you think Ukraine will be able to return it to safety? Majority of tank losses were either because of javelin or artillery, there were like maybe 3 or 4 tank battles which were recorded. I’m sorry but what 30 challengers are not gonna win them the war
@@SCLHP666 agree with you about the maintenance side of things and for me the logistics side of things specifically now they’re getting leopards and Abram’s definitely will be a big issue in logistics and maintenance using 3 different battle tanks and will be even worse if France sends their tanks. And Britain is only sending 14 challenges.
Remember, a tank is only as good as its crew. Training Ukrainians to use Challenger 2 tanks is not going to be an easy task...
Yup. Training, and managing the logistics. Making the tanks don't get bombed before reaching the front. And when will the be delivered? No earlier than 3 months I heard.
But you can be sure this tanks will be lead by most expierience tank crews.
Only a fool would underestimate the creativity and skill of the UAF. Look what they have achieved in the past 11 months, resisting and pushing back the so-called "2nd most powerful army in the world" when back in Feb. 2022 most military experts gave this outgunned and outmanned nation at most a week or two to hold out against the ruZZians. They have proven to be very, very adept at using Western-supplied weapons.

Do we know which model of Challenger 2 is going to Ukraine? These seem to be the TES model and have all sorts of improvements. Also are they getting the better quality APFSDS or older models?

Those tanks are not meant to kill dangerous animals but humans no matter what the cause is am sure both sides will suffer a very big loss before all this end. Yet everyone is just happy and mesmerizing about how amazing the machine is. There are obviously a lot of military experts on here, and I'm not being funny, but aren't tanks just sitting ducks without proper air or other types of support? What we saw at the beginnings of the war were Russian tanks seemingly falling foul of simple traffic jams, and then them simply being picked off.
Ah but you exclude the fact that russians are now extremely drained of resources and although you are correct in some sense, It would seem that tanks are going to do some work in the coming months
And why would the ukraine military send tanks in on their own, unlike the Russian military who can't do Combined arms the Ukraine military will. These vehicles are going to destroy russia on the counter offensive and reduce the number of lifes lost whilst doing so.
Hang on, this could reply will be long, but I will explain in detail.
The effectiveness of a tank really depends on the tactics/strategies that they employ. In optimal situations, tanks plays a crucial part in Combined Arms Warfare, which means it is a combination of Air Power with Land Attack components (like tanks) . Aircraft's role is launch a significant airstrike against the enemy and scans for remaining enemy which is relayed to ground forces, then the ground forces like tanks "clean up" remaining hostiles, secure, and occupy the territorial gain. In reality however, very few militaries (like US) can do this because it takes such significant amount of resources. Even the US might find it difficult to sustain such operations and based on Russia's poor performance especially in logistics, Russia can NOT DO THIS at all! And Russia knows this.
Now for more realism. Russia's doctrine is more rapid deployment of tanks. First is gain some battlefield intelligence, and rapidly move tanks as fast as possible to overwhelm the enemy. Quantity has a Quality on itself. The biggest drawback is, what if opposing force is well prepared? You will receive massive loses. This is exactly what happened to the Russians. Before the war, US intelligence provided Ukraine the battleplans of Russia. This gave Ukraine a heads up and prepare effectively. We all know the result of that.
Now what is US military doctrine? US has a more methodical approach. They make sure to gather as much intelligence before engaging the enemy. US heavily emphasized on Recon first. Now having enough intel, they form teams called "Hunter/Killer Teams". There are 3 M2 Bradleys per 1 Abrams. M2 Bradleys scan the area (hunt), while the Abrams kill. M2s can kill tanks but they specialize in recon. That is why sending Bradleys to Ukraine is revolutionary not because of their weapons, but for their High Tech Recon capabilities. They can see anywhere and notify their team before the enemy got a chance of seeing them. Its hard to hide from a Bradley because of their advanced thermals. Pair that with advanced tank, then its a nightmare for the enemy. Now the drawback is gaining territory will be slower, BUT there will be fewer casualties/loses.
In conclusion, deploy tanks properly, and they will work well. If not deployed properly, it is a recipe for disaster.

The Challenger II is a bad tank, it has horrible thermals, requires one more crew member than the Ukrainian tanks, are harder and longer to repair to maintain, they also need a whole new set of training for Ukrainian troops with a whole new supply line since Ukraine has never used western tanks before. The only advantages it has is a better, armor gun, ammo, and transmission. But compared to Russian tanks, the Russians actually have better thermals, which means the Russians are more likely to see the Challenger II than the Challenger crewmates.

@@pvught390 The Challenger will be able to easily piece the Russian tanks, but the Russian tanks still have better thermals and sights. In this case the Russians are more likely to spot the Challenger tanks rather than the other way around. They should just hope that the Challenger II's armor is good enough for them to counter-fire in time. The new Challenger III would be way better, but compared to the Leopard 2A7 and the M1A2 Sepv4 tanks the new Challenger III is about still fifteen years behind in capability.

@@Nick186 Im a little bias becuase im british and my father was reme and my grand father was one of the royal lancers that was trialing challenger one as it came into service.
But i love challenger 2, shes a gorgeous tank, just a shame she got neglected a little as the MOD focussed on the senior service.
One Challenger 2 survived 14 RPG hits and a direct hit from Milan anti-tank missile in Iraq and was back in operational service in 14 hours.
