  • The Robotic Drawing Machine from Super Make Something episode 13 draws another robot -- the star of the movie "Chappie"! Special thanks to Neill Blomkamp for the request!

please at least aad a servo to the plotter for the z axis, that would help a lot an give better drawing s

Hello man, from Stockholm, question, Is it possible to put a Z-axis, in this way we would have a plotter to draw projects and other things.
Big hug, and continues with the excellent work

Hi! It is definitely possible to put a Z-axis onto this machine, but would require some modifications to the code, as well as a slightly different PCB if you wanted to connect everything centrally. Since the motion of the pen for "lifting" it up and down would not have to be very large/complex, I think the most straightforward way to do this would be to replace the spring-loaded pen assembly with a servo motor and an attachment that holds the pen instead.

Super Make Something wouldn't it be easier to use a click pen so whenever the machine clicks it will draw and when the machine stops pushing it won't?

Iván Ramírez That is also a cool idea! You would still need a third actuator in order to push/retract the pen tip, but you may be able to simply add this to the existing pen holder assembly.

Anyway, you'll need to raise the pen in order to click it properly. Try to retract pen tip while pushing it into the paper.

I'd like to know the name of the software that you've used. Thanks

gigi S Hi gigi! I used a custom program that I wrote in MATLAB. A link to the code is in the video description of the drawing machine build video.
