    I bought an Ugly Stik sturdy Stik about 40 years ago. Recently had to put a new tip guide on it. I then took it fishing in FL and slayed a bunch of mackerel. I can buy anything I want. I like Ugly Stik.

    I haven't seen or heard about this model of rod, but will look out for them now. Looks like something I could make use of, and I like the features you've mentioned. Ugly Stik do tend to be more of a budget rod than others, but they sure do stand up to the test. Rare to hear complaints about them.

    finally , a review which includes real world uses not just parroting the numbers.
    Hadn't considered this Inshore. Now I have to take long look at it over the Elite . Inshore definitely better fits how I fish (only freshwater...but it's bigger river , Sacramento River). Stripers , King Salmon if they ever bounce back on CA coast. Also fish the surf & rocks from shore .

    This is the first time seeing it. Being that it’s a year later, could you provide an update on the 7’ medium casting rod? Has it held up? Do/did you enjoy it? Would you still recommend for freshwater? Thanks!

    Thank you for the video. I'm looking at getting the carbon inshore for freshwater striper, probably no bigger than 30lbs. I want the Medium 7ft due to the handle length but I'm concerned that it won't be strong enough and I should go with the Medium Heavy. Since I'll be trolling mostly I wasn't excited about the longer handle and getting it in and out of the rod holder. Maybe it's not a concern but I don't feel I need the that much handle. What are your thoughts? Will the Medium be strong enough for those stripers? Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

    • @snaggindragons
      @snaggindragons  Год назад

      Medium will be plenty. A lot of guys from shore throw 7'6" medium on lures.
      I think just gotta make sure the reel is good with a good drag. You probably can't horse in a big striper. Also not all medium rods are created equal, uglystik medium may have similar backbone to medium heavy rods of other brands

      @@snaggindragons Thank you so much for the reply, I did order and receive the mediums just today. They look great and I'm glad to hear they should be strong enough. I'm pairing them to start with a couple of KastKing Spartacus II's in size 4000. They have 22lbs of drag and were on sale. Trying to save money where I can but I hope they will do the trick. :)

    I go surf perch fishing a lot and I always use a spinning reel. Penn Pursuit 3 to be exact. I don't really see people using baitcaster reels on the surf. Penn Pursuit 3 is for saltwater fishing and they're super easy to take apart and clean if you drop it in the sand. Super durable smooth and a good price.

    I just got an Ugly Stik Bigwater rod medium heavy and that is a brutal beast. I'm thinking a medium heavy inshore rod might be better for my applications. You've definitely got a nice collection of rods. Did you ever consider mounting them evenly and attaching equal weight on them to compare how they bend? Increasing the weight gradually?

    I have a bunch of different Ugly Stiks, GX2's, Lite Pro, Intercoastal and a big surf rod. But lately I'm jigging for flounder a lot and the Ugly Stiks I have aren't sensitive enough. Yesterday I looked at the carbon 7' spinning rod and I liked it. But I wonder how much more sensitive it is. I use 1/8-1/2 oz jigs most of the time and I'd put my 2500 size Penn Fierce on it with 10 lb braid.
    Do you think those rods are sensitive enough or should I get a $100 St Croix or something similar?

    • @snaggindragons
      @snaggindragons  Год назад +2

      I think a lot of times sensitivity is more on the rod strength more than the brand. If you go for a medium or something instead of a medium heavy, that should increase sensitivity. Whatever you do just don't overpay on a brand.
      I've recently been experimenting with CHEAP cost gear from China and finding $40 reels etc are just as nice looking and performing as $100. Fishing is such an expensive hobby and more often than not we fisherman get fished by brands than we catch fish ourselves

    • @comfortablynumb9342
      @comfortablynumb9342 Год назад

      @@snaggindragons it's not about the price, Ugly Stiks are mostly a mix of fiberglass and graphite. So they're heavier than a graphite rod, and less sensitive. I have 7' Ugly Stiks with different actions. And I have a graphite rod my dad gave me that is much more sensitive and it's lighter. But it's too short. When I can afford it I'll get a decent graphite rod for jigging.
      My dad also sent me a couple cheap reels from China. They have 10 bearings and he thinks that means they're great. I put line on one and tried to use it. The spool is plastic and wobbly, and the gap between the spool and body is huge so the line gets wrapped around the shaft a lot. I buy Penns, and I have a couple Pfluger reels and a Diawa that are all reasonably priced and they don't have those issues. I can't imagine why Dad gave me his Pfluger and Diawa reels and he's using cheap stuff. But he's happy catching bass with that stuff. And if it works for you that's awesome. But I fish almost every day and need stuff that can deal with the saltwater and big fish.

    Ugly Stiks used to be considered decent rods. Back in the 90's folks would swear by Penn reels and Ugly Stik rods. I know I did. Never had one fail me. I've been away from fishing for 25 years so maybe they've changed.

      @snaggindragons there isn't an ugly I would use for a chatterbait, dropshot, finesse rig (any type), or swimbait. They are entry-level rods, and the balance, sensitivity, and rod action prove that. They can be used for any application you want, but you are doing yourself a disservice by not choosing a general rod made with better materials or for a specific technique. That's if you plan on spending long hours on the water. I have used every iteration of the ugly stick since 2006. My opinion comes with my personal experience with ugly stick rods and rods made for bass fishing.

    I bought a spinning rod of this rod and fyi I really don’t think it’s worth 100 it’s more of a 50 dollar rod with the way it’s manufactured. I’ve been through 4 of these rods because every time it came in the mail they were defective, 3/4 had noticeably unaligned guides or the reel seat was just completely off with the guides, one also had a grip that came in the mail loose ,there was zero quality control with these rods one of them even looked like they forgot the threading step on one of the guides (it was literally almost just glue on a guide with zero threading I never seen anything like this), 2 out of the 4 also had a bent tip when they came. This is just yet another reflection on how ugly stik has gone downhill and does not care about quality control like they used to. I get it’s not an expensive rod but for 100 I expected better craftsmanship and quality control than the typical rod. And before anyone says it’s ugly stik what did you expect I’m gonna let you all know now the older ugly stiks I have are built 10000 times better. The problem is that all these companies don’t care about their products anymore and how terribly they are put together and it’s ridiculous. I will not be trying again with this rod since everytime I receive it in the mail it looks like a child made it and there’s no shop near me that sells it.
