They also do "summer" hours in Italy. Especially in he month of August. I think it's nice that people aren't as money obsessed as Americans, and understand when it's time to prioritize time with family and for the self! Thank you for sharing your experience.
I spent 10 days in Malta and it totally changed my wife’s and I outlook on life. We live for work in the USA. Our employers act like vacation is a privilege they provide for us. Some literally have to BEG for to take their ALLOTTED time off!!! F*** that! My wife is currently fielding school counselor job offers. We are leaving in the next 2 years.
Thank you for providing the Spanish translation on your video. It is helpful as I start learning spanish. We hope to retire in Spain within the next two years. Your positive outlook on moving to Spain is wonderful.
A way to let foreigners understand why do we come off as rude is that we are BLUNT but we are also FRIENDLY, so being blunt and unfriendly means one thing, but being blunt and friendly just means people talk with joy. They are happy to be happy and try to pass that onto you while speaking. Formalities in Spain are very very very very VERY rare. So, you need to understand that in order to get our lifestyle. We live joyful lives, happy and sociable lives, that influences the language, since most people are not closed off, people are very open so they don’t feel like having to reeeaaally think what they are going to say and how it’s going to come out, everyone assumes that you get that cause it’s just the whole country’s vibe. The key here is 100% tone. So many words in Spanish have different meanings and connotations. Just one word can mean so many things… and when you have nuances like that the key to understand is tone, is it an aggressive and pushing tone? Or is it energetic and fast? Or is it chill and nonchalant? That could 100% be tricky to someone who isn’t familiarized with Spanish, as a language, not even just Spain. You’ll encounter situations like this is Latin America too. And I think it’s very telling, there’s more words for love and friendship in Spanish than in English, and there’s more words for sadness and despair in English than in Spanish. I think that can be very self explanatory when explaining the "vibes" of our language. Ps: at least that’s MY experience, being a natural born Spanish person from Spain that just speaks fluently in English and has a good understanding of how English works, just as a language by itself. I mean, we learn English from a very young age here, people nowadays still have issues with English and at this point and I’m 100% sure it’s not because it’s difficult (cause it’s not) but because people here, don’t get the "english" vibe, we come from Romance languages and English comes from Germanic languages. Lifestyle is so different, so of course the language is as well. I’ve noticed this while growing up and being one of the only ones of my friend group/family/classmates/coworkers that understands and speaks in English fluidly. When I speak and communicate in English I tend to be very analytical and technical, while when I speak Spanish my whole personality changes (or you could say reverses back to) to a waaaay more chill persona, less bothered, more for fun and more relaxed even. And it’s not a definitive trait of people who speak natively that language, but the language we speak does change our POV, and can even help us open up more. I relate to the fact that I’m able to express my emotions better while speaking in Spanish than English. And people do take me more serious when speaking English than Spanish. And that’s a fact I’ve lived through 20 years of being a polyglot hahaha
August in Spain, and in the rest of Europe, means vacations. Free time. Go to the beach, to the mountains, for tourism, to read, practice hobbies... it is strange that in the USA vacations are so short and undervalued .There is only one life, you also have to enjoy it.Regarding card purchases, the banking systems of the European Union and the USA work differently, and the banking entities in Spain work with the coordinates of the European Central Bank, so they may have difficulty accepting payments, I would recommend a bank account in a Spanish entity with associated card.
The worst part about taking short vacations in the U.S is we can't wait to get back to work to make money, which we really don't see after paying the government. There are people like myself who pay over 60 percent in taxes bi-weekly. I wonder what the taxes are like in Spain???
@@sarahlinkhorne6953 In Spain, and in general in Europe, workers receive their salary monthly, from which a percentage is deducted, the greater the more they earn, to maintain the health system, retirement pensions and social expenses. In addition, when purchasing any product, It is taxed with 21% Value Added Tax, which is paid to the State. A tax and personal income declaration is made annually, to pay or receive from the State if more or less has been contributed. The vacations consist of 30 days. natural, paid by the company. Maternity and paternity leave is 16 weeks, paid by the company. Companies pay taxes to the State for economic activity. The proceeds are used in infrastructure, roads, trains, etc.
New subscriber here! My goal is to move to somewhere on the Costa Brava in the next 2 years with my mom who is retiring, my young son, my co-parent and my boyfriend. I love love love your insights and perspectives on where you are and visit. Thank you! Blessings ✨
I just got back from Seville. I thought it was great would recommend. All that you said it is true. However with exception of the long summer holiday; all applies to every country you visit as a tourist.
You guys would be welcomed into any country because you seem calm, balanced, respectful to yourselves and others, strong in your family love, and prepared. Stay Blessed.
If you've LIVED in Europe for any amount of time, you know (or soon learn) the month of August is basically vacation/family time for practically everyone! That is one thing many expats living here understand... and appreciate.
3:37 Have you tried to repel mosquitos with this product, "Repel Plant-Based Lemon Eucalyptus Insect Repellent 4 Ounces, Repels Mosquitoes Up To 6 Hours." I used it while hiking in the woods, and the mosquitos left me alone within 15 seconds of application. They sell it online.
Hey thanks so much for watching! 🙏🏿❤️ Seville, Malaga, Madrid, Valencia, Granada are all AMAZING places. There’s so many beautiful cities to choose from! For now, we are only familiar with most of southern Spain (known as Andalusia) and have so many more places to explore ourselves! 😆
One of the reason cause lot of little business closed in August is just because if you live in a city where everyone is on vacation, there's no enough clients to open and be profitable, so you make vacation too. But if you live in a summer tourist place, there will be likely more life, shops opened and people working during that season. A local business usually regrets your credit card because is a foreign account and there's a commission for international exchange. If you have an usa account, you have always to convert your dollars for euros. That has a cost.
Beautiful 😍 family ,I just love 💕💕 your videos, currently watching you live from south Africa,Cape town I love your videos ,,, I'm your biggest fan in Africa 🔥
Hi, are you guys in Sevilla? I will be spending the month of November in Triana, across the river. I am an older dancer studying Flamenco and fulfilling a lifetime dream.
Hey thanks for watching and sharing!🙏🏿❤️We do love within the Sevilla province. Congratulations on full fulfilling your lifetime dream. That’s a huge accomplishment.🎊 Maybe we’ll see you in Seville in November!
Great video I went to Spain back in 88 and 90. I traveled the country and everywhere I went the locals were super nice and helpful. I know times change and places, but he culture remains.
Hi Guys ! thank you for the wonderful video . I wish you can do some videos about cost of living to five us an idea on how much will be enough for most major expenses like rent , food , transportation etc .. looling forward to the next video :)

Saludos!
Hola beautiful family In Germany, nothing opens on Sundays . Have a question. We have been an army family in Germany for the past 6 years . Hubby is retired 5 years, and we will be living 1,5 hours from Seville. My question is , is there a base in Seville? I know they have a Navy base in Rota. Thank you
He tenido que acostombrarme a eso porque en Irlanda siempre decimos "please, thanks, sorry, what would you like" etc. Suerte!
Sevilla in August is hell on earth, now you can understand why shops are closed at the hottest hours and the best decision is turn on the AC or go to Matalascañas and enjoy the beach and the Atlantic weather
Hey AG3 Fam, i got a question for you. I am going to retire and live in Rota Spain in the upcoming years, its about and hour from Seville, but my wife's family is from seville, we love it there, and i love watching your videos from the area. ? What's your best advice for banking in spain, are there any banks you would recommend that one can transfer from US banks to a spanish bank without many fees. Thank you.
Hey thanks so much for watching!🙏🏿❤️ If you have the proper paperwork they need, then most banks here are good. However, Santander has been our personal favorite because they handle “immigrant banking” very well. Also they are international money transfers apps that you can use as well. We hope this helps!
Iamwoldwidesevillano...Summer in Sevilla ...Sunrise 6:30am and sunset 22pm, 40 degrees or more, very Hot weather, a smart person stays at home under air aconditioning, until we go out after 10pm to take very cold beers (Cruzcampo, city branch beer) and tapas (food)...if you are out during Daylight bring at least 2 bottles of water per person...3 much better...walk under the shade of buildings and bring sunglasses
I’m from Seattle but I’ve been in Spain for over 10 years… I have the exact same problem when buying things in the USA. It’s like roulette with my payment cards because some are declined without any clear reason. I suppose some payment systems are not compatible with some banks. For example, none of the restaurants in the Newark airport accept my debit card except the Wendy’s. 🤣🤣
I'm from Argentina and I've been living in Spain for over 20 years. My family also had some problems with foreign credit cards, especially when we spent more than 100€ or so. I remember that one time, my mother went to the mall to make the weekly shopping and somehow the credit card didn't allow her to buy more than 20€ or something like that. So, the cashier had to scan a few items and then use the card, then repeat. The cashier did this like 7 or 8 times while my mother stood there with several customers in the queue, waiting for her to finish paying...
Would love to hear your thoughts on taxes. My wife and I live in Portugal now. We are from the U.S. with two young ones and are considering Spain as our next place and Sevilla specifically. Thanks in advance for any help. -Joseph & Stef
Hey Family! You only have to pay Spain taxes if you are or become a resident of Spain. Our best advice is to find local “expat groups” via social media to get all of the information that you need. For example, this FB group below address taxes in Spain. m.facebook.com/groups/americanexpatsinspain/?ref=share
@@AG3Family Thank you guys so much! Would love to jump on a zoom call one of these days. Always great to connect with others having a similar experience. -Joseph
Great video thank you ! But how did you get a visa ? My dream is to live in Seville but I’m an Australian passport holder how did you get a visa ? Thanks
Hey thanks for watching! You should be a able to get a travel visa (90 days). There’s also student visas, working visas, etc. We are personally and currently on a working visa. Just visit your 🇦🇺 embassy and apply for whatever visa best suits your life dynamic. We hope this helps!🙏🏿❤️
Thank you for this video. We are considering visiting Spain from June through August next year. Our daughter is 6 and I would love to enroll her in a Spanish language camp. Do you have any suggestions on where to look?
Hey! Thanks so much for watching and great question! There are so many different “local” language academies all throughout this entire country. When you all arrive; you’ll see how easy they are to find.
Thanks for the video. The Credit Card point has nothing to do with small town or not. It is security laws that are way higher in EU then in USA. You often cannot use an EU credit card in the US online due to the same reasons. Best is always to have a local Credit Card.
Another wonderful impression. How about organizing a BBQ for your spanish community somewhere? They have everywhere in Cataluna these public BBQ places to rent for a few euros. I would love to meet you guys and other Viewers to have a beautiful day. Also I dont know too many people and struggle a lot with meeting people at all. So that would be a nice and easy chance to connect.
Great to hear that you are still living there after 4years. 1- What city or town do you live in, and why did you choose that region over th others? 2- How long was the process of getting the paperwork in order to mover there, and type of paperwork do you need? 3- What job or jobs are you doing over there, and is comparable to US pay? 4- How is the public education for the kids, was it easy finding one? I am highly considering the move, but thinking of Valencia. Finally is $120k enough to support a family of 4 and still do about 2 international travel while living in Spain.
Thanks so much for watching. To sum up your questions: We live in the Seville province in Andalusia and live their because of work. We don’t know too much about the job market here but many people work here remote. The overall cost of living in Spain is much cheaper than the states, so your family could definitely live well with $120K. The paperwork can be tedious, but with patience and research it’s very attainable. Hope this helps!👍🏿❤️
With 120k a kings life here, 6 in the family, private school, car, house etc etc. Omg how unfair is life in this world. Im surprised the fact a person wonders bif such a high salary is enough for living here. Depending on the standards there, here you will be the king. Good luck, and i hope you come here
At what point going inland from the Mediterranean does the temperature get noticeably hotter? I'm looking into moving from TX to Spain so I'm looking at real estate. I have three animals that are part of my family. I see terrace houses but feel my pets would be too confined. I'm looking for a balance in room for them and comfort for me. I'm also on a tight budget so I need to be reasonable in my compromises. LOVE that I stumbled onto your RUclips channel in the wee hours today. I'm also enjoying Joy's blog. I appreciated the post on your son's classmate conflict and your comments on the generational trauma we carry. Frankly, I'm drawn to Spain because they seem to have been through so much (Franco/Civil War) that we're facing here in the USA right now with this bizarre craving many seem to have for an authoritarian government and political division. I just need space, and the great food, the sunny Mediterranean beaches, and a slower pace are the other obvious perks.
Hey Jenai! Thanks so much for your support and comment! 🙏🏿❤️ The entire southern region of Spain gets pretty hot in general. But there are some beautiful coastal surroundings areas like Cádiz, Málaga, Almería, etc. Most of these places you can find homes big enough for your pets. Spain is a HUGE pet-friendly country. Almost EVERYONE owns a dog or cat here.😂Feel free to email us if you have any more questions. ag3family@gmail.com
Spanish is a language where the tone in the sentence might make the sentence have a different meaning. For example, you can be stating, asking or challenging something with the exactly same words but a different tone. So looking to the meaning of the words like "dime" or "que quieres" might be misleading
Spanish temperament is not rude, just direct and honest. They don't say "please & thank you" repeatedly .. especially when in a bar, restaurant or any other place where service is expected. They will usually say thank you once a customer pays the bills and is leaving. In a bar or fast paced (not seating) environment, its common for them to simply say "Dime" (Tell me) or "Que te pongo?" (What can I get you?) because speed is necessary. Same goes for for every day interactions. Don't expect Spaniards to sugar coat things.. but that doesn't mean they're rude.
Thank you so much! Can you please please please talk more about schooling. We have a high schooler and she doesn't speak much spanish yet, so we want to know about how that would work. So many loves! XOXO
Hey Fam! There are great schools here and some are international schools so you all have options. Please check out this episode with more details:😉 ruclips.net/video/wd36U_CROcY/видео.html Hope this helps, if not shoot us an email!
I absolutely love your channel and videos. I studied in Spain for a summer during undergrad and then for a year during my first year of grad school. It was amazing in every way one could imagine almost. You may have already addressed this, but what do you all do to earn an income while there? I would love to move back for the long term, however, earning an income aside from teaching English seems difficult.
Hey Abby! There are online jobs that you can apply for, non-profits, or you can come here on your personal revenue/income. You have multiple options. Send us an email if you have any more questions.
Helo AG3 Family, We are moving to Spain next year. We are a family of 4. Questions: 1. What visa do you guys use to enter Spain? What do you do for work? Would you ever move back to America?
Hey there! These are all great questions: 1.) We are here on a “working visa” However, after 3 years you can apply for temporary residency and at 5 years you have the option to apply for permanent residency. 2.) Amos and Joy are both veterans, so Amos was blessed to receive a contractor job here in Spain. 3.) We don’t quite have a desire BUT are not opposed to moving back to America because it will always we our home. HOWEVER, we are very happy here in Spain and now consider it our home as well. authorjoyeglenn.com/
Loved the video AG3 Family!!! It is so nice to see pros & cons b/c we know there is no utopia on this side of Heaven. Nice to see Spain is a pet friendly country. On this side of the pond, some of the countries to our south are notorious for what seems to be no ordinances/HOA rules or restrictions/controls to curtail barking dogs. Barking dogs in yards, on the streets, on the roof🤔😮 are truly ubiquitous. Would love feedback on dog noises/controls there. Thank you.
Hey Joan! Thanks so much for watching!🙏🏿❤️ You’re right that Spain is a very “pet friendly/loving” country. We are not pet owners so we don’t know too much about the noise restrictions. However, we can share that we hear our Nieghbor’s loud barking Chihuahua every single day.🤣It doesn’t bother us but others complain. It seems as though there are not very strict sound restrictions with pets BUT we could be wrong and it could depend on the place/community.
@@AG3Family Thank you for that feedback. I'll bring some earplugs, when.I visit. BTW, chihuahuas are quite fussy. We inherited one when my aunt died--Oh brother--lol
Que quieres is rude, even in Spain. I find people in Seville very friendly. I get it in Italy sometimes and I correct them because when they're being rude.

Whats up guys? How are you doing? Just wondering! We are a family of four thinking about moving to Spain due to the same reason as you did with the exception that I am retired. Would 7k a month would do to live comfortably out there? Thank you in advance Noel

Hey Tanisha, First off, thanks so much for watching and supporting our videos. 🙏🏿❤️There are actually so many different educational and fun activities for children here. Spain is a “family-oriented” country so children are very important.
Hey great question! We actually have a Spanish bank account. But we keep getting charged with these crazy “international/foreigners” fees, so we try not to use the account. It’s quite frustrating.
QUE PASA means whats up!!! but its mostly used for Mexicans, in some other spanish speaker countries may sound rude ,It would mean what is happening!!!
Hey thanks so much for watching! Rota, Spain is also in the southern region of Spain. It’s a beautiful and beachy area. It’s a 1 hour drive from Seville. Also, there’s a decent amount of Americans in the area. Check out USAjobs to see if they have anything available on the area.
TY for your informative videos. But we decided against Spain secondary to taxes. US citizens that are pensioners are at a distinct disadvantage compared with other countries in Europe.
Hey thanks for watching! 🙏🏿❤️There are student exchange programs and international schools here, but we unfortunately don’t know too much about the programs. But this link may help. erudera.com/spain/how-to-apply-to-study-in-spain/
Not everyone in Spain is the same. If you travel widely, you will notice that there are stark differences among different regions and even provinces, between the north and the south, the east and the west. Even there are regional languages like galician, Valencian, catalán, vasc, etc., with their own identities. Remember than people in Spain work to make enough money to enjoy life with family and friends, and build up some savings. That is a prevailing cultural value, rather than working until you drop. Sometime overtime goes unpaid and/or unrecognised, so there are not incentives to work harder. The business culture is part of the cultural heritage from centuries and decades of absolute monarchies and a few dictatorships in the XX century which lasted until the late 1970s. The last fascist dictatorship (1939 76) left the country in tatters, with no recognisition of basic civil rights like freedom of speech, association, etc. Luckily things started to change when Spain got a Constitution in 1977 (or 1978 if l am not mistaken) and joined the EU in 1985. Only those born before 1970 can recall those days. In 1981 there was a Coup d'état.
Yes you’re right. We were clear in this video that we are only referring to people of Andalucía because that’s where we live. And we look forward to exploring the other beautiful regions of Spain.
@@AG3Family Yeah, l am with you. A feature of some Andalucían people is "desparpajo". A word not easy to translate, which means out-going to the point of over-confident, but without being openly rude, so no wonder it is somehow shocking to foreign nationals. Vasc or galician people have a very different approach. Even here in the East, we are different, but don't dare to criticise paella or Las Fallas. You are allowed to criticise the chef or the city hall mayor though.
A Spanish or at least southern way to talk may look rude or aggressive … but it’s not … just put attention to the tone on how the word is say and not the translation of it …
Been to Barcelona twice, 1st time was great , enjoyed my stay but stayed in tourist areas. 2nd time visited with my kids , we explored and drove to a beach outside of Barcelona. A lady was rude and angry that my kids had put some sand on her bag while they were playing. Honestly, it was a very bad interaction as she was so angry and l was baffled at how angry she was as we were surrounded by sand and she also had sand all over her. Although she dd not say any racist comment , my conclusion was she was racist and was not happy to have foreign black kids running around enjoying the Spanish beach. I told her sorry and she kept shouting and my response was she was being ridiculous as sand is everywhere. In the end l ignored her and my kids kept playing. Their holiday was not spoiled by l know l will not be returning to Barcelona again. The Canary Islands are beautiful, we go there a lot, never had a negative experience , but that interaction made me very weary of Spanish people
We are so sorry to hear that you had that negative experience. But as you understand, racism is unfortunately everywhere. We have noticed that maintaining our confidence and respect can help repel racism. There are so many different parts of Spain and the world in general for people to explore. authorjoyeglenn.com/2023/06/05/racism-in-spain/

We feel as though we explained it well in this episode, but thanks for reiterating.🙏🏿❤️
Very true. Thanks so much for the advice 🙏🏿❤️

If you've LIVED in Europe for any amount of time, you know (or soon learn) the month of August is basically vacation/family time for practically everyone! That is one thing many expats living here understand... and appreciate.

48 máximum in the shadow in Sevilla and 10 degrees less in coast cities...

He tenido que acostombrarme a eso porque en Irlanda siempre decimos "please, thanks, sorry, what would you like" etc. Suerte!
Hola amigo!
Muchas gracias por su comentario. ¡Esperamos verte en septiembre!🙏🏿❤️
Sevilla in August is hell on earth, now you can understand why shops are closed at the hottest hours and the best decision is turn on the AC or go to Matalascañas and enjoy the beach and the Atlantic weather
Exactly!🤣
Ahhhh vale! Muchas gracias por ese sugerencia!🙏🏿❤️
GREAT ADVICE.💯
I’m from Seattle but I’ve been in Spain for over 10 years… I have the exact same problem when buying things in the USA. It’s like roulette with my payment cards because some are declined without any clear reason. I suppose some payment systems are not compatible with some banks. For example, none of the restaurants in the Newark airport accept my debit card except the Wendy’s. 🤣🤣
Hey Marcus!
Yes you understand! “Roulette” is the perfect analogy!🤣
Hey Family!
You only have to pay Spain taxes if you
are or become a resident of Spain. Our best advice is to find local “expat groups” via social media to get all of the information that you need. For example, this FB group below address taxes in Spain.

Thanks for the info!
About the way we talk, the difference is the use of imperative in Spanish. Is not a matter of rudeness, believe me.
Thanks for your comment. But please rewatch this episode and listen to our explanation. We said it may SEEM rude but we explained how it’s NOT.
This is a great suggestion, thanks!
@@AG3Family You can live very VERY well in Spain being a family of 6 with much less than $120K.
With even half of that you can live very well.
Ahh ok! Thanks for commenting!🙏🏿❤️
Thanks so much for your explanation 🙏🏿❤️
😆🥵
Spanish temperament is not rude, just direct and honest. They don't say "please & thank you" repeatedly .. especially when in a bar, restaurant or any other place where service is expected. They will usually say thank you once a customer pays the bills and is leaving. In a bar or fast paced (not seating) environment, its common for them to simply say "Dime" (Tell me) or "Que te pongo?" (What can I get you?) because speed is necessary.
Same goes for for every day interactions. Don't expect Spaniards to sugar coat things.. but that doesn't mean they're rude.
We thought that we did a good and respectful job explaining it. But thanks for expounding.
@@AG3Family You did it. But we Spaniards are rude, remember? 🙃

These are all great questions:
1.) We are here on a “working visa” However, after 3 years you can apply for temporary residency and at 5 years you have the option to apply for permanent residency.
2.) Amos and Joy are both veterans, so Amos was blessed to receive a contractor job here in Spain.

TY for your informative videos. But we decided against Spain secondary to taxes. US citizens that are pensioners are at a distinct disadvantage compared with other countries in Europe.
💯Well at least we know that some people understand that. 🤣
Is there an opportunity dor African students to study in spain?
Hey thanks for watching! 🙏🏿❤️There are student exchange programs and international schools here, but we unfortunately don’t know too much about the programs. But this link may help.

😂😂 La peña es muy directa, sin tonterías. Al grano. 😂

The music in your videos volume is way too loud!!
You’re right, we’ve been working on that. 🙏🏿❤️
The problem is with most American cards are made for America
Yeah, unfortunately. 😩
@@AG3Family most of the banks in America nobody outside of America has heard of them, also MasterCard or visa is used world wide.
@@caballoloco100 Ahhhhh 🤣k!
They smoke way to many cigarettes out there, killin the air
😆💯
They are in Sevilla, Andalucía, greatest and nicest spanish region
It is a beautiful a region, but we still have other regions of 🇪🇸 to explore!
@@AG3Family sure you have! basque country and the rest of the northside, galicia, asturias , cantabria, navarra is a must.
i
the greatest and nicest? meh XD
Almost anywhere in spain is nice and great, don't be so closeminded
Alex,
“meh” 😂! He’s not necessarily closed minded. That’s just his opinion.
Thanks so much! 🙏🏿❤️ Yes, we have gotten many comments suggesting some of the same places!
A Spanish or at least southern way to talk may look rude or aggressive … but it’s not … just put attention to the tone on how the word is say and not the translation of it …
Yes, exactly what Joy said in the video.🙏🏿❤️
