I enjoyed this video- seeing the process of all you do on the nursery.
I also enjoyed your Propagation workshop! It was awesome.

I also got a frilly Knickers Anemone here in my garden. It’s doing g okay but hasn’t flowered or grown much. I have sandy soil come 9a and hope I can keep it going! Any tips for me on it?
Best to you all in your nursery!

@@debs-more-plantsif you are on sandy soil it will require mulching to increase the organic matter and help with moisture retention. Part shade on any soil also helps

Thanks Rosy. Great to see how you produce such stunning plants. It's a much bigger than our stone build potting shed and greenhouse. We grow about 33 varieties of perennials a year, so very small. Thanks for sharing your propagation area.

Thanks for that fascinating video. I love growing from seed and taking cuttings that I put on the windowsill, so it's interesting to see your commercial set up, and heartening to learn there are real people involved. Thanks for your videos, I do enjoy them.

I volunteer on the propagation team at a local botanical garden and found this behind the scenes tour very interesting and validating. I only started learning about this aspect of gardening about a year ago and find it fascinating. Thanks for another great video!

Thanks for the video, really interesting.
I would love to hear more about your biological controls - how do you grow all those plants without chemicals?
Do you have issues with fungus gnats with the heat pads? Why do you use cork specifically?
Love to hear more about it.

I am a retired nursery worker and have worked for Kurt Bluemel here in US. Of course there was a potting machine involved but certain plants we did manually. Seed scarification also was mechanized for certain selections. So much was involved at different times of the year. Faford soil was used at another nursery when doing by hand. Such a nice simple set up you have for your workers and also your attentiveness to conditions etc. is easily transferred to the rest of us.
Personal tip: The Old Farmers Almanac is an excellent guide for me pertaining to seed germination and propagating according to moon phases. I got hooked on this method in the 1980s and followed as well as trying to disclaim what I continue to practice.
    Love seeing you.

It must be so satisfying to have a job propagating new plants. I am pleased if I get any successful cuttings. Managed a few phlox, hydrangeas, sedum so far this year.

Thanks Rosy. This was so interesting. I don't usually give any thought to the process of creating the plants that I buy. Will definitely have to order some from your nursery now.

Fabulous, brings back happy memories of my own days working in the nursery side of a garden centre, we had no automated machinery either, was hard work but somehow enjoyable. The hottest time was obviously in the height of summer, the cold damp weather was the worst for me though, I could never seem to stay warm even with the heaviest of tasks and I’m sure you understand if I mention the “joy” of watering with a hosepipe 😂😂😂 and the pain of pricking out thousands of teeny tiny seedlings…lol. Sadly where I worked no longer exists as the land owner wanted his plot back so he could build houses + the owners of the garden centre were at retirement age. I’m a humble carer for my 90 year old mum now but I still miss my days under glass and polythene 😊

It might be a stupid question, but then again the only stupid question is the one not asked. Have you considered perhaps getting an electrical engineer to put together and new system based on the way the preferred system works? You might even be able to develop a new brand to sell to other nurseries. Just a thought from someone who can't accept the need for a change when something has been proven to work and did it well. Thanks for sharing, I love trying to propagate anything I can get my hands on. X

Not being married I can get away with putting seeds in the food fridge, the temperature was only down to 8 degrees c but that was enough for Delphiniums, but I guess that wouldn't be cool enough for other seeds, just have to make sure I don't poison myself.

I’m wondering how to propagate a variegated nicotiana that sprang up from last year’s regular, green root stock. It is not producing seed, and I’m wondering if I should try cuttings or some other way to propagate it.

    • @RosyHardyGardening
      @RosyHardyGardening  2 месяца назад +3

Legislation is moving towards a full professional ban on peat, we use Melcourt SylvaGrow multipurpose compost for much of our plant material, although in the prop house it will be specific cuttings/seedlings compost and some of it is not publicly available. You can buy the Melcourt product we use at the nursery though if you visit

@@LAWandCoach we have been pesticide free for over 3 years now. We have used a combined approach until that point with a clean up spray then biological control within the tunnels the rest of the year. When our contract sprayer stoped we stopped using any chemicals other than SB plant invigorator

Absolutely brilliant video thank you so much for sharing. Quick question, can you cut sweet pea pods when they’re green and store them in bags until they’re ready or do you have to wait until they seed fully on the plant itself?
