Wind turbines left to rot in California

- Off Patterson pass road, near Livermore CA, sits the now abandoned Patterson Pass Wind Project. Built in 1985 by EDF Renewables, at it's peak it generated 20.50 MW of power and was in operation until 2014 when it was shut down and abandoned.
Winds in this area can reach very high speeds. Many of the compromised structures have been blown over and lay shattered on the ground. When companies constructed these early wind farms, there was no thought given to demolition once their useful life was over. The result is many of these hulking structures simply left to rot away.
This was a challenging shoot as I was dodging rain clouds and dealing with less than ideal lighting conditions. I also had to be extra careful as the amount of hard to see hazards in this area were many.

👍 I don't know how many times I've watched this video, it always gives me goosebumps
I'm glad another video has come out about this wind farm. This was my childhood wind farm when the old kenetech and nordtank and bonus turbines their
I know people going to say why are you so crazy about eind turbines but it hurts me to see these old systems like this and no one doing anything with them it's just sad
@@bowling6535 i feel the same
@@boenbildch511 EDF need to do somthing about this wind farm now
Excellent work. Evocative, great music choice, good long shots to really drive home the depleted, spent scene... full of ennui...
Thank you very much!
EDF should be made to clear up the mess.
Wow looks so green and eco-efficient 😂
They're 40 years old, give them a break.
It looks like some kind of dystopian post-apocalyptic world. I'm surprised that the site hasn't been updated with more modern equipment, given that the area was already developed for that purpose and did generate power at some point (assuming it was profitable). It was probably a landmark project in the 80s.
absolutely wild! great job man!!
Thanks man, appreciate it!
My aunt has a windmill that looks similar on the farm property that she bought. I was really exited because she told
that I can turn it on if I can. And I tried turning it with the control cabinet on and the nacelle can still spin around but for some reason we can't get the blades to spin. My aunt would also like it if it actually worked.
They get away with walking away and leaving this eyesore?
It's pretty shitty.
Where did you find this wind farm i want to know
Can't relate since I'm in az and probably won't leave az until 2 years from now since I don't have the money to go to Cali, but idk watching vids of Cali or vlogs of ppl going through Bakersfield feels nice. Idk if I'll experience the California dream but someday I really hope I do.
Sustainable Energy 2.0
I bet as soon as someone start taking the motors for the copper that's in the motors and melt the copper and turn the copper in to a recycling plant and get paid , then the government will all of a sudden will scream theft of government property 🤦🏿♂️
Ah the Liberal panacea is in reality, a nightmare.
They're 40 years old, just give them a break.
Utopia they wanted.

Altamont/Patterson Pass near Tracy, CA.
0:52 what's that brother 💀💀
Hurts to see the wind turbines I grew up around treated like this. I do miss the Kenetechs, Micons, Nordtanks, Windmatics, James Howdens, Polenko, WEG, Bonus and Enertechs though 😞 They were taken down between 2005-2017 besides these ones. Also there’s still a Fayette turbine near the highway
wtf how is this possible? Is edf not forced to build the turbines back??
I saw a video of a wind farm and i seen the towers the same but the motor's new
Oh boy, that wind turbine is spinning a little 1:25
Yep. Which means it probably goes like hell in a wind storm as the brakes don't work.
@@evmoFPV How come these were abandoned
@@scarlet-e4x892 they were 30 years old and obsolete when decommissioned. That area is full of modern wind turbines that are much larger and more efficient.
@@evmoFPV A LOT of these turbines fell which mean that the bolts weren't screwed in right or the foundation failed and the bolts got loose
@@evmoFPV They could have repower this wind tubrine.
I wonder if they had to have a decommissioning plan when they created this project? One of the reasons I am against these megaprojects.
Could you do another video of this place please
I've been trying to get some more shots with better light. It's been too windy to fly up there though.
@evmoFPV really was any turbines spinning while it was quite windy or were they all not spinning
@@bowling6535 when it's windy there's a few that still spin. But it really has to be blowing hard. Way more wind than the drone can fly in.
@evmoFPV that's crazy does the wind their rarely slow down for you to use you drone or is it quite strong most of times
WOW😱😱👍👍
Zbudowana w 1985 roku przez EDF Renewables, w szczytowym okresie generowała moc 20,50 MW i działała do 2014 roku, kiedy została zamknięta i opuszczona.
Ontario Canada in a few years I think.
