From a 2020 perspective, I am bewildered by the civility of this debate. And while I disagree with Palin on her stance on the definition of marriage, I am kind of in awe to hear her speak respectfully and calmly about this topic. It is a very different style of discourse than what we most often see today. It's also interesting to see how large a role the definition of marriage played in this debate back then, how important that was. They both argue in favor of expanding protections associated with domestic partnerships but don't think they should be called marriages. In many ways, the promises to expand legal protections were empty, as legal protections in most states were not expanded until marriage equality was achieved. The political landscape has changed so much since then, in so many ways.
Homophobic: having or showing a dislike of or prejudice against gay people “I have gay friends” To be fair, those two things actually aren’t compatible.

This means he wasn’t in favor of gay couple getting legally married, which automatically denies them several rights because non-married couples are not the same as married ones, legally.

The fact that the government is involved in so many things such as marriage is just one of the many reasons we are in this mess today with an overbearing government
That happens all the time. Hey 2008: I'm talking to you from 13 years into the future, and today same-sex marriage is legal in all 50 states, and even in places like Utah and Kentucky the public accepts that, and presidential candidates of both parties say they're onboard it. In your time, the pundits called same-sex marriage a political hot potato, but America can and will grow. Don't shrink back from taking bold stances.
It is ridiculous because marriage is between a man and a woman and there is no reason to change that. Alternative civil unions already exist and are available to everyone so why does the institution of marriage need to be redefined? It seems subversive to me.

You might be a little on the spectrum. He supports couples not marriage
@@fadenih2305 Which is uncool. Maybe it’s symbolic at best but giving gays a chance to sign a marriage license together and have something physical to represent their union just like a straight couple is meaningful and important. It doesn’t matter if it’s ultimately immaterial, having that is still special if you’re devoting your life to another person and being gay means you can’t just because your heart has led you down a different path.
Biden says he wants to “bring everyone along” when it comes to raising up the middle class but to me that phrase should be broader and in more ways than just economically. “Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness,” should apply to everyone and those opportunities should be equally available. Times change and being led by people who change with them is how we make that change beneficial.

Totally unfair characterisation. Four years later, he FULLY supported gay marriage, as did Obama. But the facts speak for themselves: once in office, Obama and Biden legalised same-sex marriage. Judge them by their actions.

I don't agree with it, but it isn't particularly bad, especially for 2008
@@ospreytalon8318 Yeah, that’s something at least, especially considering the year this was said. Although he only agrees on same rights for gay couples.
