- On January 12, 2023, we were honored by a special visit from 96-year-old Bill Mercer, a legendary broadcast journalist and member of the Texas Radio Hall of Fame. We surprised Bill with a sneak peek at a recently acquired artifact from our Collection - KRLD-TV Camera 3, a General Electric Image Orthicon television camera used to broadcast breaking news of the Kennedy assassination investigation to a national audience via CBS News. This particular camera captured Bill informing suspect Lee Harvey Oswald that he was going to be charged with President Kennedy’s murder on the night of November 22, 1963. In this poignant video, watch Bill Mercer reunited with this historic camera for the first time in nearly sixty years.

For Mr. Mercer to be 96 years young and STILL with the razor-sharp memory is so amazing & inspiring!
Hearing his great voice gives me the chills. He had such an impact on local news and sports in DFW that is too hard to explain. Great guy.
Incredible!
That is one great piece of history.
Very cool to see the camera 🎥
Very, very good find!
Wow! This is so moving to watch as Mr. Mercer is reunited with his camera and recalls his historic interaction with Oswald the night of the assassination. I appreciate the Sixth Floor Museum for all of the poignant videos they produce and post.
Bill Mercer was my childhood. WCCW
Done so much/still around & memory intact-
Will there be any big events for the 60th?
The two KRLD films of the Oswald shooting - watch those in very slow motion.
what happens? Ever notice that today they typically only show the scene with at least one cut in the film process of them walking out with Oswald.... why? it only takes a couple of seconds to play it in full, and so many shows use a cut when they present the Oswald assassination
One with this TV camera, and the other one with a silent 16mm camera.
Bill used the past tense when addressing Oswald: "You _have_ been charged...". I have always assumed that he mis-spoke and intended to say: "You _have_ been accused...", rather than implying: "You are about to be charged...". In those days, the word "charged" could easily have meant "accused". Oswald was not charged until well after midnight, after his press appearance. The DPD were still saying that there were no fingerprints found on the rifle - in fact, Fritz was still saying that on Saturday (Wade finally mentioned prints on the Sunday night). Day was interrupted in his work and had to hand the rifle to the FBI's Vincent Drain. The FBI in Washington failed to find the alleged latent print for seven days, until the DPD had sent it back a second time (that's one evidentiary black hole. Drain later accused the DPD of faking it - see Hurt, Reasonable Doubt, page 109), there was no mention of the Hidell ID on the 22nd, and Boyd and Sims submitted a report saying that the fingerprints were taken before the paraffin tests, thus spoiling the latter test (in contrast to Barnes, who said the opposite to the Warren Commission, although even he initially blurted out "immediately before...no, I am sorry, immediately after...". He had managed to get his story straight by 1978 and the HSCA ). One wonders why they charged Oswald as they seemed to have nothing on him on the Friday with regard to JFK. (See Kamp, Prayer Man, pages 276 onwards)
TV tube camera on a geared head. The turret mount had various focal lengths. Before telephoto zoom lenses made operating easier.
This was great -- what is on tap for the 60th??
hopefully the remainder of the files, unredacted
1:37: What's the name of the cameraman Mr. Mercer mentions?
Gene Pasczalek
He should be inducted the wwe of fame.
Why is that woman wearing a mask?
@jude999 It's a passé symbol of mindless compliance.
“Oswald acted alone” 🤡🤡
Why is she wearing a mask???? It's 2023.
