First off, because all of you say it, if the customer can't tip doesn't mean they can't afford to eat out or are too cheap. The employer is being cheap. The customer is not the employer. Let the employer pay the employee. End of story.

It's absolutely out of control. I've gotten much more comfortable leaving no tip because everyone wants one, but doesn't deserve them. I shop at a dispensary where employees are making $20 an hour and expect tips on top of it? F--k off.
The workers at places like this aren't asking you to tip them. Companies in order to avoid paying their workers more are instead shifting that responsibility on to the customers. These companies expect you to buy the goods or services provided and to directly pay their workers as well. Tipping culture is out of control in general in the US. Ask most people working at places like coffee shops and they'll tell you that meanwhile the tips are appreciated they also think the tipping system has gotten out of hand.
STOP!! Tipping is not a right!! It is subjective and for service that is above the norm that is expected!!! Service workers think it’s mandatory!! It is not! There low hourly wages are a result of business owners and they try to pass that on to the customer!! Demand more from your owners not the customers!!
Every time I go to the US the tipping culture bothers me. I remember I was at a Raiders game in 2022 and the woman on the pizza stand gave me a death stare because I didn’t tip her for giving me a slice of pizza. In Brazil we only tip in restaurants that you sit and have the food served to you. On other places you pay the bill and that’s it, you don’t need to tip for someone doing its job.
I don't order food or go out to eat anymore just because of this. I barely have enough food to take my wife on a date. Why am I going to tip anything. Ur doing ur job. I don't get tipped to do mine. U chose your profession. If I can give a tip I will but that's rarely ever.
American style tipping culture has invaded Berlin, Germany. Especially once you begin speaking English then bars and restaurants almost EXPECT a GENEROUS tip from an American sounding customer and if you don’t leave one or leave a German sized tip (which is usually just some change rounded up to the nearest Euro amount - which is standard here) they look at you CRAZY! Yet, these businesses don’t expect “generous” tips from Germans and fellow Europeans. I’ve noticed that in the few years I’ve lived here.
About 20 years ago I began to see tip jars at 7/11 registers. It tripped me out because I walked in, I went through the aisle & selected what I wanted to buy and I spots in line but they expected a tip. Then a couple years ago I saw a tip option a Subway. We have gone from tipping at restaurants or the food delivery person to places expecting a tip at fast food places. I tend to be a generous tipper when I go to restaurants but I’m not tipping if I’m walking in, placing an order and not staying.
It’s “Yeah” with an H. Restaurants don’t have check out cashiers. A comma is needed after the word high to make it less painful for the reader. It’s “their” The education system failed 🫵
Got asked to tip at my express oil change station. I’m gonna figure out how to do it myself. I guess the tip to myself is to incentivize to do my own oil change! (Also, I voted for a living wage in my state and it didn’t pass so…)
THINK!?!?!? It has. I brought my sandwiches to the counter to be rung up and the cashier put a tip on the bill. I called her out on it. Told her “you take that off. I didn’t authorize it. Next time, you ask if the person would like to add a tip”. I’m sure she does it the whole day and only gets caught a few times. Yeah, i’m gonna tip someone to scan the sandwiches i brought to them, touch a couple of buttons, and receive money from my hand. Ridiculous
Hospital gift shops in Ca are notorious for flipping that Ipad around with several options starting at 15%-30% tip or how about a restaurant that you called an order into, Picked up your order and of course prompted for a tip when all the paid by the hour person did was ring up the order and hand you the bag of food? I am not a fan of tipping...The only time I do not have a problem with it is when I sit down at a restaurant and actually get service. Tips and donations have gotten way out of control!! I mean those on platforms like youtube etc always looking for donations. It's gotten crazy.
Restaurant owners need to pay living wages to their employees. If a restaurant cannot make a profit after paying decent salaries to its employees then it can close its doors.
I was once asked if I wanted change when I paid in cash (implying that I could leave a tip for take out). Normal practice is to provide change, now the staff want to bypass that step for tips!

Walmart added a Tip charge on top of a Delivery Charge for a home delivery from local store. Because the tip charge was forced I decided to cancel the home delivery, and drive to the store myself and pick up at curbside delivery, $ 20 savings.
Thats awesome! People should be going to the store and getting their own groceries. There's no need to be lazy and on top of that it clogs up the store aisles with all of the employees shopping for people with oversized carts. It also causes the grocery prices to go up because they have to pay people to do lazy peoples shopping.

I'm 78 & in the 1950's, the standard 'tip' was 10%. It then went up to 15% & stayed there for decades, until the 21st Century, when it varied between 20% to 25%! Since prices have 'skyrocketed' in recent years, even the original 10% tip would have greatly increased. So, to also double the tip percentage, makes current tipping an absolute hardship!
A pizzeria in my neighborhood requests that its customers tip its employees. Why should I tip people for doing their jobs? The owner of the pizza joint should pay decent wages to its employees. I am not its customer anymore and left a review complaining about its tipping policy.
I ate at a restaurant for $25 and left a $5 tip on the table. As i left for the exit, i saw the waiter from a distance, picking up the money with a negative smile and shooking his head as if to say, "Is this all the tip i got?" I just said to myself that if I am right about what am thinking, then that waiter is very ungrateful.
It's like WTF are they expecting? I have to explain to my daughter now that we are able to go out to dinner as a family of 3 on occasion, but it's simply not worth it and we don't go... And when we do we get this stigma thrown at us by the server because we're able to actually have a kid..so your expected to tip above 20% for mediocre service.
During my college days, I have worked at a couple of restaurants. If I was your waiter, I would of been grateful for the $5 tip. It seems like the mentality has changed a lot recently when it comes to tipping. Tipping should be based on the waiters service in my opinion and not on a certain percentage in my opinion. I'm pretty sure a lot of waiters will not agree with me but from the way I have been seeing, most waiters are expecting a huge tip from just taking your order and dropping off your food and never checking back on you.
@@dand3975 i wouldn't call it a heck of a good tip. seems perfect normal assuming good service. but it's definitely not a bad tip he should be upset about.
Tipping IS out of control. And all the many "Fees" are out of control. So many fees: ---- The "delivery fees"; and "under-minimum balance fees"; and "store processing fees" (when you literally walk into their store to pay them for something, in person, as opposed to, paying via online); and the And I believe every CEO/employer should pay their employees good pay, and not pass it to customers/consumers. Merchants & Restaurants should be grateful that they have customers/patrons there, in the first place. Therefore, they should pay their own employees very WELL, as they, the CEO's and Merchants, are billionaires.
Tipping when dining in I agreed with that. But what about when I called my local dinner to place an order for pickup and when I was paying with the credit card the front desk lady turned the iPad on to me so I could choose what percentage of the tip 😮😮😮 I was like okay I left some but never order again from this place that's what I thought.
I have always thought of myself as a good tipper (30%+ commensurate with service level), but if I'm ASKED to tip, my personal neurotransmitters shut down and I have no problem saying no.
It's not brain surgery- if you are standing while ordering- no tip. The tip jar started in 1999-2000... I did my service job at one point and did not receive that perk so I have never tipped in the jar or feel obligated to tip Otherwise it's 18%-20% of the base bill at a restaurant- and with higher prices, the percentage doesn't need to be 20% by default anymore. You can look at the most significant digit and do the math based off of it while rounding down. If it's awful or insulting service, it's a judgement call whether it should be nothing up to 15%. Taxis/limos it's 20% on the base bill before fees. Barbers and hairdressers it's 20%-25% since that actually a skill and they are making you look good. At a bar- try to keep track of the overall bill and leave the tip on it rather than getting stuck with tipping $1 for a single beer...though I'm sure beer is now $7-$9 each now (glad I don't have to worry about that anymore!) Make sure to tip your skycaps if you use their service at the airport. Think that's it really.
I love when the checkout device has a 25% starting tip and goes up from there. I immediately click "custom" and go to 15% or less depending on the service. No tip for any self-service places, or if there's no option to make it 15%.
Yes - people need to be paid a fair wage. They are doing their job they were hired to do at none sit down food places..... FU asking for a tip. When I see the card scanners start at 22% at a restaurant, my tip goes down to 10%. When they try to tip on tax, it goes down 5-10%...... tipping doesn’t exist in most of the world and those restaurants do fine, the service is 100x better, the food is better, and the whole restaurant experience is better. Why are they able to succeed????? Makes you question business owners in America. Maybe they are stupid and have stupid people around them?
I work in a traditional tipping industry, as a butcher. The small business I worked for years shutdown and I now work for a major grocery store. Tipping is not allowed and they will fight you to the death for your annual raise. Got to love corporate America.
I drive for Uber and Lyft too. I even do Grubhub because none of these apps pay well. And from experience only a 3rd of my riders tip. But as someone who used to work at multiple pizza places before Uber almost everyone tip. At Dominos the least amount of tips I got in a day ever was 6 non tippers out of over 20 deliveries. And most of the time it was less than 6 non tippers. But at Uber not even 6 out of 20 tip. From experience people tip their pizza drivers but not their Uber rideshare driver. Other day I had 4 out of 21 rides tip me during a big college game. Meanwhile Uber and Lyft are taking 50 to 70 percent of the fare. Such BS how us drivers using our own vehicles get treated by passengers. Imagine if servers had 20 tables and only 4 tables tip them.
What a lazy “news” piece. First, it’s been covered elsewhere for years. Second, there was zero investigation on the reasons why the wine bar restaurant’s attempt failed. This video should have been rejected by the editor or show runner.
I believe The Simpsons brought it to everybody’s attention. My biggest problem is Starbucks The price of the latte should really be able to cover any tip.
It has become crazy. Outside of the occasional pizza delivery or very occasional diner stop i dont eat out. My standard tip is 5 bucks regardless of service or total. If that's not good enough they can donate it so they don't have to deal with it.
I for one only tip when I go out to lunch or dinner, the way I tip is depending on the service. Did the server check to see if everything was alright do I need a re-fill on my iced tea. I used to wait tables for a while so I do know what it's like being a server. A couple of times my server didn't check or ask if I needed a re-fill, those times they were left no tip other than a reason for no tip.

I just don't tip. It's irritating for them to default to a percentage of what I paid for to 20% or more. Any job that asks for a tip isn't even difficult in the first place. Good service is just part of the job, stop begging.
The local family-owned burger diner and coffee shop that I frequent never ask for tips. The prices are not any higher Macdonald’s or Starbucks’, and service has been consistently good. If people don’t like the tipping culture, give your business to places that don’t ask for tips.
I've gotten very comfortable not tipping at all, even in places where I would normally tip. When I do tip, I generally tip less. The service has to be absolutely outstanding with no surprise fees for a 20% tip.

First off, because all of you say it, if the customer can't tip doesn't mean they can't afford to eat out or are too cheap. The employer is being cheap. The customer is not the employer. Let the employer pay the employee. End of story.
if you sit down at a restaurant with actual service and don't tip you can't afford to go out to eat. stop justifying screwing the waiter bc you're cheap. at least admit it.
@tommyfu9271 Yes, I admit, the employer is being cheap and screwing the waiter.
@@IAmTheGlovenor no you are. you know what the system is. you know the food is cheaper bc you're supposed to tip. then you stiff the waiter and pretend it's the employer being cheap.
@@tommyfu9271 Because it is the employers being cheap. I didn't hire the waiter lol
It's not only tipping, its donate? and "round up?. I feel like asking, how about "round down"?
If it ain’t sit down or delivery, I don’t tip. Simple as that.
Agreed. But about taxi/uber or hair salons? It feels like you also expected to tip for those services.
It's absolutely out of control. I've gotten much more comfortable leaving no tip because everyone wants one, but doesn't deserve them.
I shop at a dispensary where employees are making $20 an hour and expect tips on top of it?
F--k off.
Tipping BEFORE the service is even provided is what boggles me about the expectations here.
Everyone: No tip for Carryout..!
How about employers pay a living wage?
Never going to happen.
@
Not willingly…that is for sure.
How about finding a better paying job if you think you’re underpaid? Just an idea !
then expect to pay more genius
What an insightful reply !
Minimum wage is 20% then in California there’s some kind of 20% living wage on each receipt and then you gotta tip another 20% it’s bs
I don't order food or go out to eat anymore just because of this. I barely have enough food to take my wife on a date. Why am I going to tip anything. Ur doing ur job. I don't get tipped to do mine. U chose your profession. If I can give a tip I will but that's rarely ever.
Your wife must be proud!
I take mine dumpster diving I’m so cheap!
My gripe with the tipping epidemic is being asked for a tip before I’ve received any service.
F tipping. How about the cheapo employers just pay their dang employees?
Employers in the service industry don't pay salaries to their employees.
@@fan.80s_90snot my problem.
@RealMTBAddict what do you mean, not your problem? Are you saying restaurant owners should never pay their employees' salaries?
@@fan.80s_90s They're saying not their problem. The problem is between the employee and the employer. End of story.
Yea checkuot cashiers wants tips now ..enough is enough. The food prices are so high let the restaurants pay there own employees...
It’s “Yeah” with an H.
Restaurants don’t have check out cashiers.
A comma is needed after the word high to make it less painful for the reader.
It’s “their”
The education system failed 🫵
Tipping has definitely gone too far. It's ridiculous!
Got asked to tip at my express oil change station. I’m gonna figure out how to do it myself. I guess the tip to myself is to incentivize to do my own oil change!
(Also, I voted for a living wage in my state and it didn’t pass so…)
There shouldn't be a minumum and maximum tip limit. We tip whatever we wanna tip.
THINK!?!?!?
Next, restaurants include employee's health wellness fee which was not disclosed up front.
Restaurant owners need to pay living wages to their employees. If a restaurant cannot make a profit after paying decent salaries to its employees then it can close its doors.
Pay cash! I haven’t had to tip since switching to cash payments
I live in Malibu, California…….nowhere accepts cash anymore.
@ fancy
I was once asked if I wanted change when I paid in cash (implying that I could leave a tip for take out). Normal practice is to provide change, now the staff want to bypass that step for tips!
0% - basic service, “do your job”
$1 - bartender per drink, coat check, petty tasks,
5-10% Buffets, order at the cashier, bus your own trays, get your own drinks. Drivers, delivery people, personal care (haircuts), specialty cocktails
15% - Standard service, no frills, take order and refill water
18% - Good service, personal connection, complicated orders
20% - Exceptional service, white tablecloth, pairing suggestions, multiple courses
Walmart added a Tip charge on top of a Delivery Charge for a home delivery from local store. I was fine with home delivery charge, but I was going to decide if the driver deserved a tip or not based on service.
Especially if they don't have to pay taxes on tips, the new tip rate should go back to 10-15%
You can travel far and wide, but it’s only in the US where tipping culture exists. The rest of the world manages without tipping, why not the US?
😂😂😂 so true
The rest of the world doesn't have our economy 🤦🏾♂️
Imperial vs Metric. Fahrenheit vs Celsius. 12hr vs 24hr format. Daylight saving? A whole lotta whys in this day and age here lmao
In UK too
Because the US pays their employees not enough to pay rent, pay their bills and eat.
Contrary to American Conservatives beliefs - NOBODY SHOULD NEED TO WORK 2 OR 3 JOBS TO MAKE ENOUGH TO SURVIVE - DO YOU FOOLS NOT UNDERSTAND ? ??
THESE PEOPLE HAVE 40 50 HRS WORK WEEKS 🙄🙄🙄
WHAT A COUNTRY 🤮
I'm 78 & in the 1950's, the standard 'tip' was 10%. It then went up to 15% & stayed there
for decades, until the 21st Century, when it varied between 20% to 25%! Since prices
have 'skyrocketed' in recent years, even the original 10% tip would have greatly increased.
I spent $31 for some BBQ. Ended up paying $35 total. No tip was not an option.....yes, it's out of hand! and yes, it was Take Out.
I ate at a restaurant for $25 and left a $5 tip on the table.
As i left for the exit, i saw the waiter from a distance, picking up the money with a negative smile and shooking his head as if to say, "Is this all the tip i got?"
I just said to myself that if I am right about what am thinking, then that waiter is very ungrateful.
That is a heck of a good tip. I avoid leaving tips in restaurants, by buying food in grocery stores & cooking at home.
So many fees: ---- The "delivery fees"; and "under-minimum balance fees"; and "store processing fees" (when you literally walk into their store to pay them for something, in person, as opposed to, paying via online); and the
And I believe every CEO/employer should pay their employees good pay, and not pass it to customers/consumers. Merchants & Restaurants should be grateful that they have customers/patrons there, in the first place. Therefore, they should pay their own employees very WELL, as they, the CEO's and Merchants, are billionaires.
Sounds like you’re a spoiled brat and you should be grateful that you have people who serve you food.
I dont Tip anymore….tipping went to far
Craziest place I've ever been asked for a tip was at a fast food drive-thru
Try to pay cash then you can avoid most of that, unless there is a tip jar
I gladly hit "0" percent in the cashier's face if its just some person handing me a bag 😅
Stop tipping. Simple.
I did my service job at one point and did not receive that perk so I have never tipped in the jar or feel obligated to tip
Otherwise it's 18%-20% of the base bill at a restaurant- and with higher prices, the percentage doesn't need to be 20% by default anymore.
At a bar- try to keep track of the overall bill and leave the tip on it rather than getting stuck with tipping $1 for a single beer...though I'm sure beer is now $7-$9 each now (glad I don't have to worry about that anymore!)
Make sure to tip your skycaps if you use their service at the airport.
Think that's it really.
I love when the checkout device has a 25% starting tip and goes up from there. I immediately click "custom" and go to 15% or less depending on the service. No tip for any self-service places, or if there's no option to make it 15%.
Give him a tip of 1 cents.
Asking for a tip, while using the self checkout
If you didn't have to come out from behind the counter to serve something to me, you ain't getting a tip...PERIOD.
I work in a traditional tipping industry, as a butcher. The small business I worked for years shutdown and I now work for a major grocery store. Tipping is not allowed and they will fight you to the death for your annual raise. Got to love corporate America.
I work with Uber and 99% of waiters and waitresses don’t tip.Lmao and we tip them because it’s expected?😂🤣😂😂
The participation trophy model isn’t sustainable.
I use good old cash wherever I go. I’ve been doing this for several years. It’s a different dynamic altogether when you use cash versus a card.
What a lazy “news” piece. First, it’s been covered elsewhere for years. Second, there was zero investigation on the reasons why the wine bar restaurant’s attempt failed. This video should have been rejected by the editor or show runner.
This is unacceptable!
I just stopped tipping altogether. Asking me for a tip for a to-go order? Out of your mind.
I think tipping should be illegal
Funny tips going up and service going down
I for one only tip when I go out to lunch or dinner, the way I tip is depending on the service. Did the server check to see if everything was alright do I need a re-fill on my iced tea. I used to wait tables for a while so I do know what it's like being a server. A couple of times my server didn't check or ask if I needed a re-fill, those times they were left no tip other than a reason for no tip.
I beat tipping by not going out and not buying overpriced meals. Juice isn’t worth the squeeze unless its a cheap breakfast with an old friend. As for tipping other than restaurants, well maybe hairstylist but thats it.
To say that a no-tipping payroll model can't work is so insane. It works for the rest of the world, so I think America can and needs to freakin figure it out!
The problem is we are taxed on everything… double taxe… TRIPLE TAXED… tax when you make money taxed when you sell it now. I pay sales tax on my meal now I have to also leave a few bucks for a tip? People are tired of just spending money.
I just don't tip. It's irritating for them to default to a percentage of what I paid for to 20% or more. Any job that asks for a tip isn't even difficult in the first place. Good service is just part of the job, stop begging.
It has I ordered a pizza for pickup and carry out and they still be asking if I want to leave a tip bruh I’m COMING TO GET IT!!!
20%-25% is standard now. They default it to 25%. I'm livid
I don’t call it asking for tips anymore. I call it out and out bumming for free money in an abundance of establishments.
In my country tipping is a crime.
Speaking as a cow, I've been complaining about tipping for years.
Tipping has got out of control. Lol I’m not tipping the dispensers stoner who does nothing but hands me a bag of weed. They have the easiest job in the world.
That one drives me nuts!!! And because it's all cash you totally feel obligated.
@@andrewnmontemayorI can use my card.
I happily do not tip
I think it had more to do with service workers during the pandemic. We felt that service workers were putting their lives on the line to serve us. We felt proud of them and we tipped them accordingly or excessively. Now that the pandemic is over, they are gouging us!
