- Everytime i hear sara sing it reminds me of what a great singer she is..especially if you've heard her hit songs like gravity and the one from superman which i can't remember right now lol..but i liked how ben was basically back up to sara in this song. A-

in addition to redyellow blue's comment, ben folds is an amazing pianist. he really is super knowledgeable about music theory, and even better, he knows how it's applied, and after all the time and energy he spent devoted to music, he is definitely qualified to be a judge. he knows what he should be listening for.

I understand that you're trying to defend Ben Folds, and I totally stand by you in that - but I have to say that saying "those who can't do, teach" is pretty offensive to teachers. I just graduated from a vocal performance program, and the professors were some of the most incredible singers I had ever met. Ben is a very successful musician outside of judging - the Sing-Off was a side job. His vocal technique isn't particularly refined comparative to Sara's, but he's still a great performer.

Case in point: Nicole as a judge all last season.
I was surprised when Ben was the one to make comments about Afro Blue's musicality. I feel like there was pressure for the judges to not praise their technique, because it was getting too 'a capella' and not catering to their idea of a modern a capella. regardless, this performance was great, and ben is a great musician.

It's hard to belive that at 2:52 the only instrument being played is a piano. No percussion, no brass and no bass. And yet my ears tell me there is.
It was good for the first few seconds until people started making noise in the background. I can't stand that noise.

@IvoryTongue26 i agree that Ben doesn't have a great singing voice. But have you ever heard the phrase "those who cant do, teach"? Just because he wasn't born with a great voice doesn't change the fact that he's the most musically knowledgeable among the judges. Being born with a good voice and having no clue musically doesn't make for good feedback and criticism. Being born with the gift of understanding every aspect of the music at hand, however, sets you up to give great advice and JUDGING.

This was underwhelming at best,especially the way they raked Afro Blue over the coals. I expected more from them. They acted high & mighty with all this unwarranted criticism of AB and they are forgettable when they perform. Sara can BARELY sing herself while she is judging his voice. She sounds like a knock-off Norah Jones. Funny how they did a horrible job singing together and they are judges for an Acapella competition that judges people singing together with no music. Inept judges.
