But if we talking about little characters with triangle hat maybe you're looking for Krion Conquest or Fire and Ice (Solomons Key). Also check Fist of the North Star, it has character with color palette kinda like Raiden.
Now I can analyze that all 8bit games sound pretty much same, like the sound used to punch jump etc, but every game has a different background music. Great memories.
There's this one game that I cannot remember the title but your objective is to complete a quest and at the end of every quest you get a puzzle piece. I was stuck to a certain level and was not able to finish the game. The hero wears red and he can throw spears and creates block to make bridges and stairways. (Damn, that was like 30years ago.)

Metal Gear, Contra, Jackal, Battle City, Elevator Action, Legend of Kage, Karateka, Rush'n Attack, Adventure Island, The Goonies II, Mega Man, Bomber Man, Gun Smoke, Balloon Fight, Road Fighter, Pacman, Mario, B-wings, Castlevania, Castle of Dragon, Zelda, Circus Charlie, Popeye, Spelunker, Donkey Kong, Shufflepuck Cafe are the most notable ones that I've played a lot. I remember, our only day of playing is on Saturdays for just an hour because our parents want us to focus on our studies. They want us to finish our assignments before playing video games or outside the house. Metal Gear and Battle City are my most favorites!
