SO USEFUL, one of my characters has a long bow (range 150/600) and I thought you had to be BETWEEN those ranges or else you would roll at disadvantage. I had no idea how I would get 150 ft away from something to fire just to not have disadvantage, thank you for making this video and all the others as well!
In case anyone is having trouble with reloading of ranged weapons 1:45 (because I had trouble) You DO NOT Reload Immediately after Firing. You can fire your weapon ONLY ONCE per TURN. You RELOAD as a free action on your NEXT TURN if you are going to fire. Unless.... Crossbow Expert allows you to ignore loading properties. Hope this helps.
the sharpshooter feat actually affects thrown weapons as well as standard ranged weapons because it specifies a ranged attack in general and not any specific type of ranged attack. so basically the harpooner fighter is a viable strategy.
Once again, Bryan Forrest knocks it out of the park (and through a clubhouse wall XD). Seriously, this was fun and informative. The cameos from Marisha and Liam were nice bonuses.
Word to the wise, if you’re focusing on ranged attacking, the sharpshooter feat eliminates the disadvantage penalty on shots between normal and maximum range.
I often use a house rule that your target doesn’t impose disadvantage on a ranged weapon attack by being within five feet, on the logic that a point-blank shot is hard to miss. Other enemies do still impose disadvantage, however.
None of the weapons you mentioned between bows, crossbows, or slings are fired. They are all shot. Firing refers to applying actual flames to ignite propellant. Either through a held torch, a matchlock trigger, or a more advanced delivery mechanism like a wheellock or percussion cap. All weapons that operate in this way tend to be grouped into the category of "firearms".
Love the video, and I have a simple correction to make: Most Thrown weapons are NOT ranged weapons. This is a common misconception. They are Melee weapons that can be thrown. Look at where they are on the weapons table, most of them are in the melee section (excluding dart and net, as those are Ranged). This means the Archery fighting style has no effect on the attack rolls of thrown weapons that are in the melee section. This has been a PSA.
Just being that guy, fire usually involves an incendiary action like gunpowder, so guns and rifles are fired. A ranged attack with no incendiaries involved would be shot or loosed.
I fight with my fellow DM on perception VS investigation all the time. I'm glad I've got some closure and peace knowing that someone else thinks I'm right!!
I should note that I house-rule that I have as a DM and that some other DMs might operate on, is that as long as it is not a thrown weapon, or as long as it is not a rare ammo type. I just assume that the player has arrows when firing, and as such, I don't really make them do the accounting for arrows. It's like asking a Skyrim player if they have iron arrows, the answer is "yes"
RL it can be very hard to draw a full weight bow. Some of them have draw weights up to two hundred pounds and the men that fired them had arms like tree branches. Some crossbows have draw weights as high as one thousand pounds and have to be spanned with a crank device and pulleys. Even fully armored and padded getting struck by that would not feel great. I dare say it might even ruin your day.
Imagine being a knight in full plate in a full gallop on the back of your horse, and some ass with a heavy crossbow decides to let one go right at your throat, upper chest, or even your helmet. Even if it doesn't penetrate, you stand a good chance of getting knocked hard enough to fall off your horse at 35 mph or more. So not only do you get hit by this fast-moving, painful missile you get to enjoy a car crash with no restraints immediately after. Hope you have a nice gambeson on.
Just to point out, they had strong arms, sure, but the significant majority of the strength used to draw is from the back. Also, crossbow draw-weight is not comparable to bows, meaning a two hundred pound bow would be much stronger than a two hundred pound crossbow. Crossbows need a much heavier draw to get the same amount of force due to the shorter draw length. That being said, the strongest crossbows can punch through plate (not necessarily into the wearer, but still) whereas the strongest bows cannot.
@@ElliWoelfin the draw right on the crossbow has to be high, because it had such a short draw distance (can't remember the technical term for the life of me) It basically had less time to accelerate the bolt, so it makes up for it in massive amounts of force. This is why you the draw right of a bow and crossbow don't show you to compare effective impact.
I mean... guns are just as easy to use at close range tho. My first ever session(out of 2 so far) i made a particularly memorable attack while fighting on a pirate airship(this battle was closely followed by a battle with a dragon). This guy with a hookthingy(actually what the dm called it) was charging at my character who had just gotten his greataxe stuck in the captain's back(rolled with advantage because the dm liked how i roleplayed it and got a nat 1 and a nat 20 so the dm decided that my axes got stuck). When my character noticed the guy with the hook(who missed on his attack) he swiftly pulled out his rifle and with the help of three glorious nat 20s in a row, stabbed the bayonet into the guys mouth and blew his head right off. The dm loved it so much that the bullet actually hit the other hook guy in the head killing him aswell before flying of out of the airship, hitting a bandit about to ambush a traveling merchant in the head aswell.
