Hello Friends!
Today we are continuing our open cup series, this time on a black background. This is a 24x30 gallery wrapped canvas from Artist Loft.
Today is HoA's birthday! HBD HoA!!🎂🎁🎉💛

There is no silicone in my paint.
The cells come from the open cup technique. When paint is poured from up high into the open cup, gravity forces it down and pushes the colors under the lip of the cup and 'swipes' it, spreading it very thin so that cells can pop up.
I lay down a black basecoat, then use the top inch of a paper cup as my ring. I pour 3 separate rings, then decide I want to try an experiment.. what would happen if I layered a cup and did a ring pour into the open cup?
So I layer a small cup and pour a ring pour into the open cup. I did not get that immediate cell formation that happens when its poured from up high.. but some cells did show up. When I was editing the video I noticed that a lot more cells appeared in that area a little later on.. so it did actually work, it just took longer without gravity forcing it. I may have to explore this more...
After the cameras were off I put this in my Tuffshed to dry.. and the oddest thing happened! A small cloud of tiny flying things, gnats, no-seeums, starting flying around the surface of the wet canvas! Im wondering if the scent of GAC800 had anything to do with it? I do get the occasional kamikaze bug but this was several of them! I finally took it someplace else to dry and put it under a net, but there are a few 'organic embellishments' that they contributed.. and I added a few lines myself to aid in a flowing feeling..

I watched to see where the dark lines came from - only to discover you used BUGS and you didn't even specify what size or type of bugs were used. It is always interesting how some paintings will look so different when they dry and are put in different light. The gold did its thing as it will do. This one morphed into a beauty! You are hilarious! Thanks for the belly laugh Serf'rett! They were no-seeums, but make sure you get the 16 micron size, not the 32 micron!! You can only get then under a full moon if you are riding a unicorn and pure of heart tho 😇 are you too pure to be pink?? Big hugs 🤗😁🥰

I've tried the ring pour in the open cup also. I didn't really care for my results. So I decided to try doing a dirty cup and then pour that into an open cup, I got some really cool effects!😊

Well how cool is that Kumu...! I got some gnats in one of my paintings and I was told that Van Gogh had a grasshopper in his painting and to leave them...lol. There are many a gnat trail in my paintings but it's ok because they give it character...

Ring pour in an open cup.... genius. So surprised it didn't do more. . None the less, I haven't been inspired to paint in weeks....but your open cup pours look like so much fun..... Perhaps a straight pour into the open cub since you can pour it from up high? Layered cup or not. Love cells and colors on this pour!

This turned out beautiful!!! I think you may be onto something with the ring pour into the open cup... I could see it working out with some more experimenting. I wanted to ask you if you have ever tried a Traveling Open Cup Pour... where you leave the cup on the canvas after you have poured your colors in, and then slide it around with the cup still on the canvas... that way you can let the cup go naturally towards an edge. Not sure how it would work with multiple cups, I am sure you can make it happen though if planned out just right. Anything you do is amazing!!! Don't you hate the damage that the bugs can do!?! Even inside, my kids are always leaving the doors open... I picked 2 tiny little gnats out of painting last night... and it made me GGRRRRR!?! Needless to say, it is dimpled now... it was so pretty too... one that I was actually really happy with for once.

Wow, Mina, this composition took a lot more work than usual. I love sections of this one, including the "tagging." Kumu is the perfect name. So sorry that the bugs swarmed and signed it...I chuckled when you called it "organic embellishments." I need to borrow that phrase, please.
I like your idea of ring pouring into the open cup. I've only tried dirty pouring from a layered cup into an open cup, and it resulted in a FEW really cool cells with multi-colored rings, but also had some weird not-quite-muddiness (that you called "hazing") that I didn't like on the creamy background color, so it all got tilted off and poured again. I very much like the haziness in YOUR painting. Maybe because you are pouring on a black background. So I'm adding this to my list of experiments to try (my Painting To-Do List is about a mile long now...lol).
Open cups are one of my favorite techniques to use because they make me giddy and giggly watching the colored cells pop out, and they're totally ASMR-magic-happiness for my brain! They also FORCE me slow down because I have to wait for the paint to roll out and develop.
OMG!!! you think it's the GAC that the bugs are attracted to?!?!?!!! Really?!?!?!!!! Dang, girl, it would be SO amazing if you figured out that it's the GAC that calls to the bugs! We can ask Goldens to fix that issue!!! Were they the teeny tiny gnats or like fruit flys? What time of day did they swarm? We have so many blasted gnats and weird bugs this year, and they are driving me 'buggy!' Hmmmm...maybe we can counter the bug pheromones with essential oils, or since you're painting outside, maybe burn citronella candles while you are painting? Or maybe you need a Wizard or a Tabiat Izadbanoo to stand guard! (I had to ask my son-in-law for that word..lol.)
I had to laugh when you explained the physics of open cup pours (very well stated, indeed) because I SO saw the face and tone V has been dealing with the last 6 weeks! You are such a Mamam-Moallem! And you ROCK IT, Girl!!!
