    Very well explained! I really wasn't able to understand how an audio converter fits together with an audio interface in a signal flaw. Now I understand that an audio interface has a AD/DA converter inside, but it also has mic preamps, sound effects, and so on, whereas, if I want even better audio conversion, I should buy a standalone AD/DA convertor, such the Antelope or the Orion that you mentionned there, but that means I also have to get standalone preamps, sound effects, reverbs and so on... but not "All-in-one" audio interface. Did I get it right? Very informative sir, thanks a lot!

    I just heard the Burl B2 in action and I want it...
    Right now Im using the Apollo 8x converters.
    I record ITB and mix OTB.. I use several hardware chains then I run them into the Neve 5059. I use the 4 outs of the Neve and run them into a SSL Six with another hardware chain as an insert on the 2 bus before it goes back into the Apollo/DAW.
    I want the Burl to be the last in the signal line of my hardware units coming back into my DAW and bypassing the Apollo converters. So I only want to use the BURL as and A/D... How would I connect this to the Apollo to bypass the Apollo converters?

    What are your thought on this? So you are only recording 2 channels at a time when using your high end ADC? Using toslink / ADAT you can use 8channels max?
    I'm using the Burl ADC for 2 ins on optical / spidf and RNC MBC for 2 channels in on ADAT. That gives me 4 high quality ADC's available at one time. Recording from channel strips. I thought about the new Heritage pres with ADC 8channels but thought the MBC might be better and with the Burl and MBC I have two options. I have great channel strips so I don't need more pres...want more....maybe.
    I guess it does not really matter what interface you use if you don't use the mic pres or built in converters. As long as the interface works with your computer and DAW efficiently. Not using the built in pres and ADC and DAC seems to eliminate any latency or lower it if there is any.
    What has been your experience?

    Hey Czar, thanks! Do you need to go through the interface or can you go directly into the computer with the signal from the converter? I ask because I think about buying a studiolive32 mixer in order to have a lot of ins & outs without a need to cascade interfaces, but all of these digital mixers dont have the ability to capture a converted AD-Signal, no ADAT no SPDIF, only one AES going out (while the DA-conversion is not as important as vice versa). So what I would like to ask you is: Would it be a massive downgrade to stick to the presonus studiolives conversion in the long run? I mean, is that really sooo bad? and second: cant you just hook up the AD-converter to your computer? The recorded signal is running into the DAW while the rest is going through your regular interface?

    Love your videos. I have an Apollo 8xp and am Apollo 8 connected together. I have my pure 2 commected to the tos link on the Apollo 8xp set to SPIDIF. I can mix and then export my final mix over SPIDIF to my pure 2.
    Now I want to buy a Burl b2 bomber. To connect it I assume I would connect the analog XLR to a set of ports on my Apollo. Would I them connect the Left and Right over the AES Connector. To the Appolo 8xp. They say the Burl AES Port will allow L and R to the Burl. Again just resting to figure out how to add the Burl to my existing Apollo setup ?

    Great video!!! I have a Galaxy 32 myself. I’m planning on getting 4 X Ssl Violet Eqs for my main busses. Each of them going into it’s own hardware bus compressor. The problem is it is the first time using a summing box and I’m. It confident this is the right way of connecting and routing the signals. I was thinking coming out of the Galaxy 32 on 1-2, 3-4, 5-6 &7-8 into one Violet per each stereo pair. From each Violet getting into each corresponding compressor IN. From the out of each compressor into the Summing mixer following the same stereo structure . From the AES out of the Summing mixer to AES In of the Crane Sing Quantum Hedd. from the Hedd Analog out into Creme RC into Bettermaker Liniter and Back into the Analog in of the Hedd. Fro. Here AES out to M905 and from AES of M905 to Lynx Hilo for printing in a secondary computer… Does it make sense? Anything wrong with this setup? Thank you.

    What confuses me is when you talk about recording into the pure 2 and then have it going out to the Orion 32 , does that mean you cant use all the I/O of the Studio 32 if you wanna use the D/A of the Pure 2? Let me know if my question doesnt make sense. Im new to the high end world of conversion/interfaces and trying to figure it all out! I would hope you can still use all the I/O of the Orion for recording/mixing/mastering but then use the Conversion of the Pure 2.

    • @ChristopherczarSmith
      @ChristopherczarSmith 6 лет назад

      You can use all 32 channels on the orion, however to use the spidf or adat you have to sacrifice those channels from the physical I/O. So for me when I am connected with the Pure2 by spidf, which is two channels, I lose 2 channels from my physical 32. If I was use adat (8 channels) on the Orion 32 I would lose 8 channels from Orion 32 physical I/O.

    It's really well explained. I just don't figure out with one thing.
    If I have a track worked in logic (al digital). Do I have to go out from my interface with SPDIF to Pure 2 and then coming back from pure 2 with its analog out or do I have to go out from my interface in analog to the pure 2 and then coming back to the pure 2 in digital?
    I think that less passage I do, the better it is. So probably if I'm in digital I need to continue to stay in digital to the pure 2 and then coming back from the pure 2 in analog to my interface.

    Standalone converters and Audio Interfaces are becoming one of the same as the gap bridges. Many people even refer to the Apogee Symphony as an Audio Interface because it connects to your computer and even has a headphone jack. Same with the Lynx Aurora (n). Both Apogee and Lynx has the options to configure the units with built in pre amps. Converters these days are becoming more and more like multi functional high end audio interfaces. The Motu AVB line and Focusrite Red interfaces examples of high end audio interfaces that are in the ballpark of Apogee, RME, Lynx, Antelope etc.

    Hey man . Awesome channel bro. I have few questions for you . I want to upgrade my ad da . Right now i have multiface rme . I like the rme drivers and i am hooking bunch of synths to it . I also have a separate greatriver mic pre. Lets say i get the pure too , and hooked it up with the rme through spdif . Can i still use the pure 2 AD for the mic pre only? And keep the rme for synths? If so, in this case my computer would be dealing with 2 interfaces at the same time? Its a bit confusing at the same time? Thanks a lot

    • @TheAudioCzar
      @TheAudioCzar  7 лет назад +1

      +Mostafa Negm you can get a pure 2 and connect it to the RME. You don't have to connect the pure 2 to your computer unless you want to utilize the software control. To use the great river pre (great pre BTW) you can connect it to the XLR in on the pure 2, them spidf to RME. In your DAW select spidf input for that channel.

    • @Negmdaproducer
      @Negmdaproducer 7 лет назад

      audioczarnet so if i am using the rme inputs and then connecting it to the pure 2 , this way i am bypassing the DA only of the rme ? Or will i be bypassing both AD and DA?

    • @TheAudioCzar
      @TheAudioCzar  7 лет назад

      ***** if you use the RME inputs and then monitor the output from the pure 2 connected by spidf then your using the D/A from the pure 2 and the A/D of RME. I wouldn'tsay your bypassing the D/A of RME, because technically if your using the spidf out your just choosing note use the RME D/A. To use the pure 2 for A/D then you would need plug into the pure 2

    • @Negmdaproducer
      @Negmdaproducer 7 лет назад

      so please let me know if i got this right .. a chain could be like .. Synths>Rme inputs>spidf out rme>spidf in pure2> monitors . and if i want to use the mic directly into the pure 2 to benefit from the high end AD conversion .. that would be like this ... Mic>greatriver> Pure 2 in> spidf out to RME> choosing the spidf channel from the totalmix rme software ....... other wise if this couldn't happen . i guess there is no point of purchasing an AD DA . I could go get a DA only . I'd have to use the AD pure2 to justify it right ? . I guess it wouldn't be optimal to only use the RME as a patchbay for my synths . however RME has great drivers ..
      how about I can go for a Lynx HILO it has lots of inputs and outputs.. and sell my RME ..I guess both Pure2 and Hilo are at the same level!! this way I can benefit from both AD and DA .. what do you think ? and Thanks a lot for your time man . I appreciate your help
      Respect

    • @TheAudioCzar
      @TheAudioCzar  7 лет назад

      You got the signal flow right. The Hilo and pure 2 are both 2 channels. Between the two I would go with the pure 2 because it's rackable. The form factor of the Hilo is odd to me. Though I guess they probably sale rack ears for the Hilo but that would be an additional cost. Also I'm not a fan of the touchscreen. The pure 2 has software control where I can control it from there. As far as sound I wouldn't one is better then the other. I had a lynx Aurora before getting the Orion and I was pleased the conversion and clocking from it.

    what i dont get is say i wanna track with all external preamps/eq/comps, or using a mixer and I dont want an interface/converter with mic preamps, because like i said i already have all my preamps, how do you connect all those channells into your interface? well, Okay, I guess you need line ins right? the thing i dont get, is where are all of the line inputs on these interfaces without mic/combi/line inputs? like right now i track through an isa one , a compressor, and an eq etc and the last thing it goes into is a mic/line in on my interface, but when i look at all these antelopes and stuff I guess i dont see how to get all the inputs in? sorry if thats confusing!

    • @TheAudioCzar
      @TheAudioCzar  7 лет назад

      +James Cassidy if your using an interface that has mic/line option for the input you want to use it as line if your using a external pre. Most interfaces have a combo jack (XLR/TRS). Usually the TRS connection bypasses the mic pre. So you can go from your pre to the line in bypassing the pre on the interface

    • @underpressureman
      @underpressureman 7 лет назад

      yea no i get that! what im saying is if your using all external pres, either hardware or from a mixer, and your using an interface/converter without pres(because all your pres are covered) how are you getting it into interfaces that dont have mic pres built in? know what i mean lol? if not just tell me and ill try reword it! i understand though how to use external pres/eq/comps etc and run them into a line or mic/line in on an interface!i guess another way to put it would be, lets say i had a recording that required a big i/o channell count, like 8-16 mics, and i had all external pres or a mixer, how do you route all those to an interface or a/d/ d/a converter? like they make ad/da converters without mic preamps for people that dont need them or even some like the rme 's that have 8 pres but say you can run 64 channells of inputs..like how lol?

    • @TheAudioCzar
      @TheAudioCzar  7 лет назад

      Do you mean how can a interface say 26 inputs for example and you only see 8 inputs? If the interface has adat each adat connection can add 8 channels up to 48k sample rate. higher than that and you cut your channel count in half. So it goes from 8 to 4. If you have a presonus Digi max for example it will let you connect 8 mic/line inputs by adat to an interface. So if you've using all of the inputs on the interface you can expand the inputs by adat. If that's the answer or I'm still misunderstood let me know

    • @underpressureman
      @underpressureman 7 лет назад

      yeah you answered half of my question forsure, the thing i was having trouble understanding is if you wanna buy an interface without preamps on it , is there options that have just line ins for if your just wanting to use external pres! i kind of figured it out over the weekend though and realised there is interfaces you can buy that just have line ins and other stuff but no actual pres! i just didnt know exactly how you would connect your pres to your interface if it didnt have combi jacks or pres already! ! so no worries! thanks homie!

    • @underpressureman
      @underpressureman 7 лет назад

      my only question know would be whats the difference between a converter/ and an interface that just has line ins and no pres? or is it the same? or is a high end converter, just like a high end clock something you just add on to your interface?

    If i have outboard gears, Mic - Preamp - Comp - Converter - Interface. are these in right order?

    • @TheAudioCzar
      @TheAudioCzar  5 лет назад +1

      Yes, however your interface is a converter. But you if you had an external converter you would go from that to the line input of the interface

      Czar thanks but the also final output(to the speakers) would be the interface as well correct?

    • @TheAudioCzar
      @TheAudioCzar  5 лет назад +2

      @@danielkang7789 yes, unless you had an external D/A converter. But interface out to your speakers would be using the D/A in the interface.

    • @danielkang7789
      @danielkang7789 5 лет назад

      Czar sorry i meant using interface and the converter at the same time since I wanted some better outboard converter on top of the interface im using atm. But according to what you’ve just replied, does that mean I wouldn’t need an interface because i have a better external converter? and is that ok for my recording to final production and mixing as well?

    • @TheAudioCzar
      @TheAudioCzar  5 лет назад +1

      @@danielkang7789 you would connect the external converter to your spidf on the interface, you would still need an interface because most likely the interface has the majority of your I/O, like more example, my Presonus Quantum carries my I/O, but the Antelope Pure 2 is connected by spidf to the quantum

    Noob qustion, Orion is already AD and DA converter, why you use two converters, pure 2 strictly for mastering?

    • @TheAudioCzar
      @TheAudioCzar  7 лет назад

      I use to pure 2 for mixing and mastering. The reason I'm using two converters is because I mix using analog summing. Doing this I need a separate D/A converter to monitor whats being recorded back in the DAW. If I was mixing in the box then Orion would be all I would need.

    I dont get how someone can use an a/d converter WITH an audio interface when the interface already has it..... EXample: you record something, signal leaves compressor goes into a/d converter and then into interface (which already has converters!!??) unless you need a particular type of interface?

    • @TheAudioCzar
      @TheAudioCzar  4 года назад +1

      If you go line in into your interface you are using the interfaces A/D. If your using a standalone A/D converter, that would connect to your interface by spidf. Then the signal, say a vocal, would go mic - compressor - A/D, spidf out of the A/D to spidf in on the interface. Because its going spidf, which is digital, it stays digital after leaving the A/D going into the interface.

  • @jeanounou

    Now I am confused again; 7:19 Why would I want to connect a DA/AD converter to an interface? Shouldn't I rather connect it to the computer?

    • @Rockelement
      @Rockelement 6 лет назад

      interface is the "computer" or the soundcard.

    • @TheAudioCzar
      @TheAudioCzar  6 лет назад +1

      you would connect the A/D D/A converter to the interface, digitally. So for the D/A converter you could go spidf out from the interface to spidf in on the converter. Now you select spidf output on the interface it will be coming from the d/a converter.

    i dont agree with you about the importance of ad/da
    i once recorded cheap preamps with cheap mics going through my apogee ad16x, sounded drastically better than my 500 series, neumann mics going into a motu 2408mk3
    AD/DA is the number 1 priority imo

    • @TheAudioCzar
      @TheAudioCzar  7 лет назад

      interesting. Did you find the MOTU conversion colored the sound?

    • @gruponemesis
      @gruponemesis 7 лет назад +3

      yes, the motu was like having ear muffs on. i could never get my mixes to sound like top 20 music...so my crusade began to get that "sound"
      the hi and low end were never right, even with neve 1073's, focusrite reds, and API channel strips....Neumann m149 and u87 mics...all sounded muddy and not so hi end. Then i heard a friends recording and my jaw dropped, mind you hes not a good engineer, out the box with no mixing his sound blew mine away. He was using apogee ad16x for AD conversion....and the rest is history! Apogee has that polish sound, natural high end with clarified lows. Im looking to upgrade to orion 32hd but im super scared it wont hold up to apogee. i live in a small city and have no way to demo the antelope converters....perhaps we can file swap to see the difference....im hoping antelope is just as high end....

    i am interested in buying a rme audio interface and dedicated a/d and d/a converters.
    1) do I need both a a/d and d/a unit and a clock for this to work? or can i just buy a a/d converter and connect it to a audio interface?
    2) can someone show me or link me to a video on how I would connect a a/d conveter to a d/a and then a clock and then to my interface?
    cheers

    • @TheAudioCzar

      you can use the A/D converter as a clock. Just connect a word clock cable from the out of the A/D converter to the word clock in on the RME.

    Instead of lining the micpre to the converter, what happens when we line it in the audio interface converter? Is the preamp "useless" if we connect it to the audio interface preamp converter ?

    • @ChristopherczarSmith
      @ChristopherczarSmith 6 лет назад

      You can go line into a converter on the interface, just make sure when your interface bypass the pres when connected by line level if your using a combo jack (XLR/TRS in one) Not all interfaces bypass the mic pres.
