This - by original definition, is the RIGHT tempo, strictly speaking from the form of the piece and manuscript. Nothing has to do with moon, it had funeral vibes and was inspired by Mozart's Don Giovanni's part, when Commendatore is dying.

This is actually a very authentic tempo. When you listen to fortepianists (John Khouri, for example, on an 1833 Broadwood) this is the tempo they take. The tempo is marked Adagio Sostenuto....most people take it at a Largissimo. It's like the Chopin etudes...when you look at the tempi marked in the urtext there are no slow etudes, but people usually slow down 2 or 3 of them.
The wonderful this is THIS IS ART. I like it, you don't, she does, he doesn't. Great! Plenty of room at the table.

Thank you for having revived this music that has been asleep for too long! Finally I hear the real moonlight, each harmonie is felt and has its own colour, so the succession of the hamornies in your interpretation makes real sense! For the first time, I've cried listening to this piece. Most moving interpretation i've ever heard.

Are you kidding me? She plays with immense passion. Okay, it's not the best interpretation, but it's HER interpretation, and everyone should have their own, right? it's very mighty of you to say you can play this better than her. This, in my opinion, is beautiful. I've had a masterclass on beethoven sonatas from her, and i know for a fact she plays with immense soul and passion.

Judging from the comments, I have to add that many people who've left them don't actually play piano. This is a correct tempo. The majority of performances of this sonata are actually interpreted with the wrong and slower tempo, which could falsely create the perception that this particular performance is deviant.

Although I don't know what's the real speed that Beethoven originally intended, I assure that I DO feel much subtle in her play than other players who's been interpreting slow slow and slow.. It's so delicate..that i can even feel the turmoil swiping in Beethoven's heart. The moonlighting particle is falling onto the piano...

    What a nice "Tempo".

  • @TorAndreKongelf

I am so happy she plays this in the correct tempo like written in the manuscript by Beethoven. I even to my own horror seen some editions where they remove the Alla Breve marking by Beethoven in their score, which makes the tempo alot slower, and wrong. Its a disgrace upon Beethoven to change the score that radically to someone ones liking and spreading a false meme on this sonata as well.
Hj Lim uses alot of rubato here which is unusual but somehow I like it. Beethoven also used alot of rubato but always had a strict sence of puls when he was playing piano pieces.

People who commenting on the tempo are clueless. In the original manuscript of the sonata Beethoven wrote "Alla Breve" which means you are counting 2 in a beat, which is practical sense means double the speed in my cases.
Therefore the tempo you hear here, is the correct one. The normal slow motion tempo is wrong according to the original manuscript.

Most interesting and beautiful interpretation ever. She really captured Beethoven's spirit, the world is very lucky that Lim has made this integral with her revolutionary visions. Her Beethoven is the most powerful, expressif, revolutionary, a true beethovenian insight. This integral will emerge as the reference for all.

I've had a few thoughts on this newer way to do the Moonlight first movement.
Beethoven marks this movement as an Adagio sostenuto in cut time rather than in common time. This means that the minims need to be the slow beats, not the crotchets or triplet quavers. Slowing the crotchets or triplet quavers disrupt the flow of the music. If the minims (and, for that matter, the semibreves), were the slow units, the notes in the top and bottom voices can form up into intelligible lines and phrases. Also, the triplet quavers can flow more freely and anticipate the stormy semiquaver arpeggios in the finale. At this speed the first movement can flow more naturally into the second movement. When it is played slow the movement feels disconnected from the rest of the sonata. The metrical structure of larger units can still allow the music to express its character fully.
I'm not out to pontificate like the historically sensitive practitioners. Rather I've thought deeply about this music and have formed up some observations about the relationships between the elements. Andras Schiff is another pianist who has espoused this way of doing the Moonlight. Lim and Schiff are both trusting the inner logic of the music and they are not playing it as quacks who know zilch about the meaning of the music.
I am also told that Beethoven was inspired by the music for the Commendatore's death in Don Giovanni. I know that correlations like this may not be solid but Beethoven must have made a memo of that passage when he was preparing to compose this movement.
I can't help thinking that there are so many family likenesses in disparate passages of Beethoven's music that it would be good to acknowledge them as performers and even as listeners. The main theme in the slow movement of the Ninth Symphony bears a striking resemblance to the Pathetique sonata slow movement. It would also be good if we noted the links between the Choral Fantasy and the Ninth Symphony finale. The character of the music can still express itself fully. Again I'm not out to be a quack who ants to lead people into pluralistic ignorance and collective fallacy. I wish to highlight the links and family likenesses between similar passages. The historically sensitive performers (e.g. Gardiner) allow the family likenesses to be clearer. They wouldn't want to consciously start groundless fads with no evidence in fact.

    • @th415263
      @th415263 10 лет назад

Exceptional writing, concise and clear to read. This is actually the first time I've heard this movement performed in this way, and I find it quite refreshing. I myself play it more 'conventionally' and slowly, possibly because I hadn't heard of it any other way until now.
Personally, I don't think there is anything wrong with her interpretation. She is clearly a brilliant pianist, and the faster than convention tempo in my opinion helps the piece have a stronger flow towards the end of this movement.

    • @yipengli1072
      @yipengli1072 10 лет назад +1

th415263 What a reassuring response I've got from you. I'm wondering if I might point you to the Andras Schiff lecture on the Guardian website. He talks and discusses all 32 sonatas and each sonata has its own link. The ECM Schiff Beethoven sonata cycle is rewarding listening in this repertoire.

th415263 Just to let you know, I've just had the chance to listen to the Artur Schnabel version of this movement. It is remarkably similar to Lim and Schiff. Schnabel understands the metrical superstructure and prioritises the minims and semibreves as the slow beats. He also plays the bass line marcato to define it clearly.

I really respect and admire HJ Lim's own interpretation of Moonlight. Some comments below criticize temp, rhythm, and bla bla..,but they are not worth being concerned too much. The critics even do not know the composer's mind or background. Anybody can easily criticize other's performance, but in some cases he/she can not play half of it, or is short of intelligence to understand the deep mind of the player.

Impressive and it would seem as Beethoven himself wished it to be played and not slowly as is the norm in most modern performances of this music.
As +Rodrigo Ruiz states in below comments ''Adagio sostenuto, which means "At ease and sustained", which points to a flowing, cantabile in which THE NOTES are sustained and not TIME.''

Ok. So people who praise her don't get constructive criticism for stating that they like her, so why do people who say that they do not like it do? I can state my opinion just like you can. Just like he can, she can, whatever. Speeding this repertoire takes away so much of what could be expressed in this. It's romantic. When you have a romantic moment, you want it to last forever. When she plays it, it's like she wants it to hurry up. Do you understand what I am getting at? Slow is not alwaysbad

Bro the people in this comment section don't know what Alla breve is. The tempo is literally "to the half note"! Which means HALF NOTE= 50 or so not quarter note, people are just used to hearing it wrong.

Second movement is the flower between the abysses. First movement is an abyss of despair. Must be played with tremendous anguish. Third movement is absolute rage and must be played with rage. In all three the pianist has to orchestrate voicings and not play choreds. The inner melody, sotto voce, complimentary all must sing as the different instruments and voices they are.

    Wonderful, brave and fresh.
The people who don't get this should just stick to their Daniel Barenboim and Claudio Arrau records.

편안하다 못해 위태로움마저 느껴지는 대담한 해석입니다..
    듣기에 따라 호불호가 갈리겠지만..

There is a lot of controversy surrounding this piece. Believe it or not this is actually the tempo that it was intended to be played. A lot of pianists play it too slow.
