She EMBODIES this, from moment to moment. Betty carries her grief in and just allows everything to influence her to a proclamation of her own greatness. Thanks for the closeup -- this is a Masterclass in musical theatre performance.
Betty.... Huge influence on my career since we did "Promises Promises" In the Round with Donald O'Conner 1972, right before Fosse summoned me for Original Co. of "Pippin"- Betty's delivery of the entire score of Promises made a huge impact on me, a young dancer, especially her "Knowing When To Leave"... I was so fortunate to see her in "Sunset", Perfect! xoxo! Cheryl Clark
There are so few women that have nailed this role. Betty is one of the best emotionally, and IMO Elaine Paige is the best vocally, but its so unfair to compare so I'll leave it as Betty and Elaine are both amazing :D
I agree about the few ladies who could nail it, which is what I think was its downfall. I saw Close, Buckley, Paige, Petula Clark, and a Bway understudy. Close was my favorite actress, but Buckley was hands down the best vocalist. Those who saw the original runs witnessed theatre magic.
@@MattTexas I think that is the fairest comment I've seen on many pages. I completely agree that Glenn Close's brilliance comes from the acting, and no doubt that Buckley was the best vocalist, I mean in my humble opinion. For me Betty Buckley just had that special voice that could really just fit into every show she did, and Glenn Close just brings out the character.
@@Jukka70 I feel lucky to have seen both of them perform, along with Elaine. I remember Betty getting the insane ovations from the audience. It was definitely something special.
OMG!! I so want this performance!!! :) I have a couple of videos of Betty in the show and I love her... would lvoe to find some Petula Clark ones though
I really wished she had been brave enough not to do Glenn Close's horrendous key change at the end. Surely a singer of this calibre could have kept the original, thrilling ending intact
@@daviddavis6171 Just listen to Patti's World Premier cast recording verses Glenn's. After the final "silent music starts to play.." there's a horrendous modulation down 4 steps. Here's Patti in the original keys 20 years later ruclips.net/video/t3P9GORfSgM/видео.html
She lowered the key! She exaggerates, she sings the words too fast and is overacting . Nobody sings the songs better than Patti, the acting I agree , she follows too much Swansons original version and sometimes looked cold!

I bet she was sensational as Fran.
what a treat to see Betty Buckley in anything
I wish you'd kept the clip going just a moment longer, long enough to hear her next line, "Now go."
The costumes and staging of this original was so much better than the revival and Betty was an amazing Norma.
Thank you so much for sharing this.
What a performance!!!
Bravo!
Great long ovation for her coming on stage.
Whoah!!!
Pretty freakin' amazing, I would say.
I had goose bumps!
What a supremely talented performer
god this was so moving!
she is my fave in this role
awesome
Stupenda
AHHH if only we had the "Now go."
Fantastic. Betty is awesome.
Love her
SHE IS THE BEST
LOVE HER
Wow. That's all I can say.
she was brilliant - I saw her in one of her last shows in London too!

Glorious!!!
Glenn Close did an adequate job. Buckley lives and breathes the character!
She is phenomenal in everything she does going back to Song & Dance & Pippin. Not to mention Cats.
There's no way that's the gym teacher in Carrie(wish I could have seen her as Carrie's mother in the musical version)
I *live* for the clips of her in 1988 Carrie the Musical. Perfection.
Once again crowd applauds and roars big time 7:22
"Norma Grizmond". (I could say that about Elaine Paige and Linda Balgord too...)
@germanvegemite lucky!
@ AtLastOnTheGround, no it doesn't! She was simply amazing.
God, she's so creepy! And I totally mean that as a compliment.
The head Mike is such a distraction!
The andrew lloyd webber disease lol
Does it get any better than Betty's Norma?!
Yes Glenn Close !
No one comes close to Betty! No one!
patti lupone tops them all 🤷♀️
that voice. like no one elses. but why does she keep wiping her nose?
No it doesn't. Saw her on Broadway-she was electric.
I really wished she had been brave enough not to do Glenn Close's horrendous key change at the end. Surely a singer of this calibre could have kept the original, thrilling ending intact
Yes it's an odd choice as she could easily have done it
Can you send a link of what you are talking about?
